When you're planning your Hong Kong travel itinerary,
you're probably wondering whether to include Macau, right?
My conclusion is, if you have the time,
I absolutely recommend combining the two destinations!
Getting from Hong Kong to Macau by ferry or bus
is not difficult at all.
And since the atmosphere is completely different from Hong Kong,
even a day trip feels like
you've added a whole new destination to your trip! Haha.

But if you search online, you'll find so many options like TurboJET, Cotai Water Jet,
and various buses, which can be really confusing.
Actually, the most important thing when choosing isn't the price,
but rather where in Hong Kong you want to depart from
and where in Macau you want to arrive!!!
1. Should I really visit Macau from Hong Kong?

If your Hong Kong itinerary is 3 nights or longer,
I recommend dedicating about one day to Macau.
From the European-style old town with Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul's,
to the dazzling Cotai hotels like The Venetian, The Londoner, and The Parisian,
the atmosphere is completely different from Hong Kong.

A day trip is definitely possible,
and if you love a hotel staycation,
including an overnight stay is also a great idea.
If you're departing from Hong Kong city center, choose the ferry.
If you want to go directly to your Macau hotel,
a direct bus is the easiest option to understand.
2. Hong Kong to Macau: Ferry VS Bus Price Comparison

Don't just look at the price;
also consider the departure and arrival points.
Category | Ferry | Direct Bus |
Price | ~$17~ | ~$20~ |
HK Departure | Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal | Prince Edward, China Hong Kong City, Wan Chai, etc. |
Macau Arrival | Outer Harbour or Taipa Ferry Terminal | Galaxy, Venetian, MGM, Grand Lisboa, etc. |
Travel Feature | Approx. 1 hour by sea | 1 hour + Land travel via bridge |
Pros | Good accessibility to Hong Kong city center | Minimizes transfers to hotel areas |
Recommended For | Day trip tourism | Luggage, hotel stays |

The direct bus offers the crucial advantage of being able to choose from various pick-up and drop-off points
at major city hotels in Hong Kong and major city hotels in Macau.
Since the price difference isn't significant,
If you're in Sheung Wan/Central → Ferry
If you have luggage and are heading to check into a hotel → Bus
You can choose based on your travel itinerary!
3. Ferry: Cotai Water Jet VS TurboJET Differences
If you've decided on the ferry,
now you might be wondering which ferry to take.
Both take about 1 hour, so rather than time difference,
it's much easier to decide based on where in Macau you want to visit first.

Category | TurboJET | Cotai Water Jet |
Representative Color | Red | Blue |
HK Departure | Sheung Wan | Sheung Wan |
Main Arrival | Macau Outer Harbour | Taipa |
Nearby Attractions | Senado Square, Ruins of St. Paul's | The Venetian, The Londoner, The Parisian |
Pros | Convenient for Macau Peninsula sightseeing | Easy access to Cotai hotels |
Cons | Additional travel to Cotai | Additional travel to the old town |
Price | ~$17~ | ~$19~ |

If you're planning to visit Senado Square or
the Ruins of St. Paul's right from the start,
I highly recommend TurboJET!
It's super convenient for kicking off your Macau Peninsula itinerary,
and the price is great too. I actually took TurboJET myself and
headed straight to Senado Square first! Haha.

As for Cotai Water Jet,
it operates on the Sheung Wan ↔ Taipa Ferry Terminal route,
and you can even choose between Cotai Class and
First options for ultimate comfort!

If you're staying at Cotai hotels like Studio City, Grand Hyatt, Four Seasons,
or JW Marriott, or if your trip revolves around
The Venetian, The Londoner, or The Parisian,
taking the Cotai Water Jet is definitely the best option for a smooth travel plan!

And remember, for both ferries and buses between Hong Kong and Macau,
you'll go through immigration procedures, so your passport is absolutely essential!

So, which one should you choose?
Day trip to Senado Square & Ruins of St. Paul's → TurboJET
The Venetian, The Londoner, The Parisian → Cotai Water Jet
Direct transfer to your Macau hotel with luggage → Direct Bus

If you've made it all the way to Hong Kong, it would be a shame to miss Macau –
it's much closer than you might think!
Keep in mind that your ferry options for specific times might vary depending on the date,
so once your trip dates are set, I recommend checking the available ferry times first before
finalizing your Macau itinerary! :)
The ferry starts from ~$17 and offers good accessibility to downtown Hong Kong with a sea journey of approximately 1 hour. The direct bus starts from ~$20 and offers the advantage of minimizing transfers to Macau hotels with a land journey of 1 hour or more.
TurboJET arrives at Macau Outer Harbour, which is convenient for sightseeing on the Macau Peninsula, including Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul's. Cotai Water Jet arrives at Taipa, making it easy to access Cotai hotels such as The Venetian, The Londoner, and The Parisian.
If you're going directly to a Macau hotel with luggage, the direct bus is recommended. If you're in Hong Kong Sheung Wan or Central, using the TurboJET ferry is convenient for starting a day trip to the Macau Peninsula, including Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul's.
Ferries primarily depart from Hong Kong Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal and arrive at Macau Outer Harbour or Taipa Ferry Terminal. Direct buses depart from locations such as Prince Edward, China Hong Kong City, and Wan Chai in Hong Kong, and arrive at major hotels in Macau, including Galaxy, Venetian, MGM, and Grand Lisboa.
