Hong Kong Layover: From Incheon to Melbourne
Exploring Tsim Sha Tsui on a Layover

On my recent trip from Incheon to Melbourne, I had an exciting 8-hour layover in Hong Kong! Arriving around 11 AM, it was the perfect timing to grab lunch and explore the city before my connecting flight. It felt like I got to visit two countries in one trip thanks to this Hong Kong layover.
I'm excited to share my Hong Kong layover itinerary, including all the best spots to visit in the city center for a quick but memorable exploration!
Top Spots to Visit in Hong Kong City during a Layover

Trying to visit both Tsim Sha Tsui and Central during a layover can be a bit ambitious. Even with an 8-hour layover like mine, you need to factor in time for immigration and transfers:
▪️ Allow approximately 1 hour each for immigration and customs upon arrival and departure: -2 hours
▪️ Give yourself a generous 1 hour for airport-to-city transportation: -1 hour
This means you're left with roughly 5 hours of actual sightseeing time!

While you *could* try to rush through both Tsim Sha Tsui and Central, I preferred a more relaxed pace and focused solely on Tsim Sha Tsui to avoid feeling rushed or getting off schedule.
Getting from Hong Kong Airport to the City

For my journey between Hong Kong Airport and the city, I opted for Uber. Although the efficient Hong Kong AEL Airport Express train is also available, this was my first time in Hong Kong, and I didn't want to risk getting lost, so Uber seemed like the safer, more convenient choice!

However, a one-way Uber trip for two from the airport to 1881 Heritage in Tsim Sha Tsui cost approximately ~$29. It was quite a bit pricier than I expected! My sister and I paid for the convenience, but if you're looking to save money, I highly recommend the AEL. It's significantly more affordable!

[Hong Kong AEL Airport Express - Per Person Fares]
▪️ To Tsim Sha Tsui 👉 Kowloon Station / ~$13 → ~$9
▪️ To Central 👉 Hong Kong Station / ~$15 → ~$11
As you can see, the AEL is much cheaper than an Uber. You can currently book with a 30% discount, so if you're traveling to Hong Kong by October 2026, don't miss out on these savings!

Harbour City - Macau Restaurant - Avenue of Stars - Lan Fong Yuen - Bakehouse
[Harbour City - Macau Restaurant - Avenue of Stars - Lan Fong Yuen - Bakehouse]

I focused solely on Tsim Sha Tsui, exploring iconic spots like Harbour City and the Avenue of Stars, alongside culinary delights such as the Macau Restaurant, Lan Fong Yuen (famous for its toast), and Bakehouse.
Harbour City & Avenue of Stars

Harbour City and the Avenue of Stars are essentially next to each other, making them perfect to combine. We visited a restaurant in between because our lunch timing was a bit off. If you're planning your itinerary, I recommend:
✅ Combining Harbour City and the Avenue of Stars into one block of time.
Macau Restaurant

🌟Cash Only!🌟 I was so glad I brought some cash; otherwise, I would have been in a pickle!

We ordered stir-fried noodles and a pork chop bun. The flavors were subtle yet delicious! And seriously, you *must* try their signature drink – it's absolutely divine.
Lan Fong Yuen

Lan Fong Yuen is a legendary Hong Kong cha chaan teng, famous for its unique blend of Western and Chinese fast food, often served with milk tea. While it's known for full meals, we just went for dessert!

Since we had already eaten, we ordered two milk teas and French toast. Make sure to drench that toast in syrup – trust me on this! (Note: Lan Fong Yuen requires a minimum order of one drink per person and HKD $40 per person).
Bakehouse

A trip to Hong Kong isn't complete without an egg tart, right? When I heard the famous Bakehouse was nearby, I practically ran there!

There was a line, but it moved surprisingly fast, and we placed our order quickly. They churn out egg tarts continuously, so no need to worry about them selling out!

The end of May in Hong Kong was quite hot and humid, making it tough to stay outside for too long. We ended up heading back to the airport earlier than planned, but even with an hour to spare, I realized trying to squeeze in Central would have been too ambitious.

✔️ If your Hong Kong layover is 10 hours or more, you could potentially visit both Tsim Sha Tsui and Central.
✔️ However, for layovers under 6 hours, I recommend choosing just one area, either Tsim Sha Tsui or Central, to explore without feeling rushed.
