When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?

As a true Hong Kong enthusiast who's experienced all four seasons there, I'm here to spill the beans!

The absolute best time to visit Hong Kong

I'm going to share my top recommendations for you!

And I'll also give you a Hong Kong packing list to check off as you get ready!

1. When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?

Except for its scorching summer, Hong Kong is

a fantastic place to visit year-round!

But since you're making the trip, why not aim for the best weather?

The most highly recommended time for a Hong Kong trip

is from October to December.

For the first half of the year, I recommend January through April!

While the latter half of the year is also fantastic, if you visit Hong Kong in January or February,

you'll have the chance to see the traditional AIA Circus!

If you love a good circus like I do, a February trip to Hong Kong comes highly recommended!

Or if you're a fan of traditional arts,

you absolutely must catch the Cantonese Opera at the Sunbeam Theatre, which is unfortunately closing down in March.

It's scheduled to close in March 2025,

so this year is your last chance to experience it!

The sweet spot for a Hong Kong trip,

from October to December, offers delightful weather

that's perfect for sightseeing.

October and November in Hong Kong boast weather much like a pleasant early autumn day,

which is absolutely perfect for exploration.

December in Hong Kong isn't too cold either, but

you might want to pack a light coat.

When is it NOT ideal to visit Hong Kong?

What about summer, July and August?

Just as there are prime times for a Hong Kong trip,

there are also periods when it's perhaps best to reconsider.

When I mentioned I was traveling to Hong Kong in July,

everyone around me strongly advised against it!

They kept telling me Hong Kong is incredibly hot and humid then.

And honestly, they weren't wrong about the heat and humidity.

However, I actually found it more bearable than the sweltering heat back in Korea!

Haha!

Korea is getting so incredibly hot these days; it's quite a concern!

Surprisingly, it can feel hotter than famously warm Singapore,

or even Hong Kong itself.

However, based on my experience, even the period I'd generally advise against for Hong Kong travel,

July to August, wasn't too bad when compared to Korea.

It was better than I expected!

2. Do You Need a Visa for Hong Kong Travel?

If you're a Korean passport holder?

You can visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days.

However, if your stay exceeds 90 days,

or if you're visiting for purposes like employment or study, a visa is required.

Since we're just traveling, we're all good!

3. Hong Kong Travel Essentials

Light packing is always the best for travel, right?

Hong Kong has plenty of shopping, so you can always buy what you need there.

But there are a few absolute must-haves you should pack!

Passport

This is an absolute travel essential you absolutely cannot forget!

Also, double-check that your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining!

As mentioned above, if you're traveling for less than 90 days,

you won't need a separate Hong Kong travel visa.

Octopus Card

This is Hong Kong's transportation card.

You can use it on the subway, buses, and even ferries.

It's also accepted for payments at restaurants and convenience stores.

It's most convenient to book it in advance at a discounted rate and pick it up directly at the airport.

Universal Adapter

This is an absolute must-have item to pack!

The electrical outlets in Hong Kong are different from those in Korea.

They look like this:

Among my Hong Kong travel essentials, I always make sure to pack two universal adapters.

While some hotels might lend them, you often have to pay a deposit.

To avoid the hassle, I recommend just buying your own.

No voltage converter is needed!

Just for reference, the hotel I stayed at had universal adapters already provided in the room.

SIM Card or Roaming

Hong Kong generally has good Wi-Fi coverage.

However, when preparing for your Hong Kong trip, roaming or a SIM card is still essential.

Roaming can be quite expensive, so I recommend a SIM card,

as the cost of one day of roaming can cover 5 days of data with a SIM.

Cash & Cards

While many places in Hong Kong accept credit cards, some only take Octopus Cards or cash.

Make sure to exchange some currency or bring a travel card.

For your information, the travel card I use allows fee-free withdrawals at HSBC bank ATMs.

Hotel Voucher

When traveling internationally, hotel booking issues can arise more often than you'd think.

Sometimes there can be problems with names or reservation dates.

Time to check in quickly and get some rest!

For moments like these, it's always a good idea to bring a printed hotel voucher.

Umbrella

If you're heading to Hong Kong after June, a mini umbrella is an absolute must!

Just like Southeast Asia, sudden downpours can happen.

Be sure to pack a small umbrella that you can easily carry in your bag.

While many hotels offer umbrellas, they're often large and inconvenient to carry around.

Plus, the rain often comes and goes quickly,

so a mini umbrella is definitely the most convenient!

Light Cardigan or Outerwear

Hong Kong is a place where they definitely don't skimp on air conditioning!

Due to the humidity, the AC is cranked up high in buildings and even on the subway.

So, while it might be hot outside, it's often quite chilly indoors.

If you're sensitive to cold air conditioning, make sure to pack a light cardigan.

Essential Medicines

Getting sick while abroad is no fun, but it happens.

I highly recommend packing essential over-the-counter medicines.

Healthcare costs in Hong Kong can be incredibly expensive!

And don't forget to get travel insurance to be prepared for any unexpected incidents!
