Hong Kong Entry Procedures

Let's break it down for your 2026 trip!

1. Arriving in Hong Kong: Head towards Arrivals

Once you step off the plane, simply follow the signs for Immigration → Baggage Reclaim.

Depending on your flight's gate, you might need to take an internal airport train!

It's a similar system to many major international airports. Just follow the 'Arrivals' signs, and you'll be directed straight to Hong Kong immigration.

International visitors should head to the 'Visitors' lane for immigration clearance.

2. Do You Need a Hong Kong Visa?

NO! Your passport is all you need.

Hong Kong has always been a visa-free destination for many nationalities, even before mainland China eased its own visa policies.

If you hold a US passport, you can enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days!

Simply ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining from your entry date. They rarely check onward tickets or hotel reservations.

Having traveled to Hong Kong over 10 times, I've never experienced strict immigration checks. So, don't worry if English isn't your strong suit – you'll be fine!

3. Hong Kong Arrival Card?

No need to fill one out!

This is truly fantastic news!

As of October 16, 2024, Hong Kong abolished the Arrival/Departure Card (the paper form previously used at the airport and other immigration checkpoints), a policy still valid today in 2026!

This means you no longer need to complete any paper immigration forms. Just present your passport, and you're good to go!

There's no entry stamp either; your entry is processed electronically.

4. Baggage Claim & Customs

After clearing immigration, you'll be directed straight to the baggage claim area.

Once you've collected your luggage, proceed directly to customs!

If you have nothing to declare, you can simply walk through the green channel.

Head towards the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel. If you do have items to declare, use the Red Channel.

5. Getting to the City: Your Complete Guide

If you plan to use public transport, make sure to get an Octopus Card! It's like a T-money card in Korea, an essential for buses and other transit.

There are three main ways to get from Hong Kong Airport to the city:

Hong Kong Airport Express (AEL)

The AEL gets you to downtown Hong Kong in just 25 minutes!

It's the quickest route from the airport to Tsim Sha Tsui and Hong Kong Station (Central).

You can pay with your Octopus Card or a pre-booked AEL ticket.

Hong Kong Taxi

While Hong Kong has various taxi apps, Uber is often the most convenient for international visitors!

You can even hail a red Hong Kong taxi through the Uber app.

Traditionally, Hong Kong taxis only accept cash, but by booking through Uber, you can pay by card.

Uber pick-up is available at CAR PARK 1. Just follow the airport signs, and you'll find it easily.

For Hong Kong Island (red taxis), a ride from the airport to Wan Chai typically costs around ~$38-51.

It's a convenient option if you have a lot of luggage or your accommodation is in a less accessible area.
