If you're flying through Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) on a layover, you might be wondering about the best ways to freshen up and relax before your next flight. Good news! Hong Kong Airport offers fantastic facilities, including free showers, that can make your transit much more comfortable.
I recently transited through Hong Kong on my way to Phuket and had the chance to use the free shower facilities. Let me share all the details on where to find these showers, lounge options, and how to make the most of your Hong Kong layover!

1. Free Shower Facilities at Hong Kong Airport for Transit Passengers

Arriving at Hong Kong Airport for an early morning transit? You'll be delighted to know there's a place to take a refreshing shower – and it's completely free to use!
2. Hong Kong Airport Transit Shower Locations

Hong Kong Airport boasts two free shower facilities. You'll find them on Level 5 (the arrivals level, where you deplane) near Gate 12 and Gate 43. These facilities are open 24 hours a day and are comparable to paid shower facilities you might find in other major airports.

The shower facility I used, near Gate 43, had about four individual shower stalls. Once you arrive at Hong Kong Airport, simply follow the signs for 'Transfer' or 'Transit'. You'll eventually spot the free shower rooms, which look similar to regular restrooms.

Upon entering, you'll find a waiting area before heading into the individual shower stalls, much like a typical public restroom layout.
3. What to Bring: Shampoo, Conditioner, Towels, and Other Essentials

Inside the Hong Kong Airport shower stalls, you'll find shampoo (and possibly body wash) provided. A hairdryer is also available, which is a huge plus!

However, you'll need to bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, and facial cleanser. If you forget anything, there are vending machines within the shower area where you can purchase these items. You can pay with credit cards. Unfortunately, Alipay usually doesn't work for non-mainland Chinese accounts, so your credit card is your best bet in Hong Kong.

I once mistakenly brought a plastic sheet instead of a disposable towel to a budget hotel in China, which led to an awkward air-drying experience after my shower! This time, I purchased a toothbrush and toothpaste set from the vending machine at Hong Kong Airport. It cost around 50 Hong Kong Dollars (approximately ~$6). It felt a bit pricey, but there weren't any convenience stores in the immediate transit area, so the vending machine was a lifesaver.
4. Waiting Times for Hong Kong Airport Showers
Waiting times can vary depending on the hour. I arrived at Hong Kong Airport between 3 AM and 5 AM and used the showers during my early morning layover. There were only one or two people ahead of me, so I waited for about 20 minutes.
If you have a particularly long layover in Hong Kong,
you could also consider booking a stay at the Regal Airport Hotel, which is conveniently located just a 2-3 minute walk from the airport terminals.
