Helsinki Layover Itinerary 2026: Perfect Half-Day Trip
Make the most of your Finnair layover with this perfect half-day Helsinki itinerary! Discover how to easily explore the city center, sights, and local food.

The Ultimate Helsinki Layover Itinerary
Perfect for a day trip during a Finnair connection!
If you're flying with Finnair through Finland,
you'll often find yourself with an awkwardly long layover.
That's exactly what happened on my flight to Lisbon, Portugal.
Since it felt like a waste to just sit at the airport,
I decided to book a quick stay in the city and do a half-day trip! :D
The central station is only about a 30-minute ride away,
and downtown Helsinki is compact enough
that a half-day itinerary is more than enough to see the highlights!
1. Getting from Helsinki Airport to the City Center
Once you exit the arrivals hall, just follow the "Railway Station" signs.
It's a short walk to the train platforms!
From there, you can hop on a train straight to the Central Station.
(Both the P and I lines will get you there.)

You can easily buy your tickets at the kiosks right before the platforms.
Make sure to select the ABC Zone ticket.
As of April 2026, a one-way ticket costs €4.80 (~$5 USD).

Trains run frequently, with departures about every 20 minutes.
I caught my train close to midnight, but they operate from 5:00 AM
all the way until 1:00 AM, making it super convenient!
There's no assigned seating, so just grab any open spot.
The ride is surprisingly fast, the seats are comfortable,
and it’s a fun, scenic way to start your mini-adventure! :D
2. Half-Day Helsinki Layover Itinerary
To be honest, the weather was a bit gloomy—caught right between winter and spring—
so I didn't have massive expectations for downtown Helsinki.
If you're traveling with parents or want to maximize your short time,
I highly recommend booking a half-day guided tour!
They usually cover all the core spots in about 4 hours.
I just wandered around aimlessly, which was nice but less informative.
Helsinki: Must-See Attractions Guided Walking Tour | Finland

Here's a quick rundown of the route I took!
Since I had an overnight layover in Helsinki,
I dropped my bags at a hotel upon arrival, got some sleep,
and spent about 3 hours exploring the city the next morning.

I had a few spots saved on my map and hit up the main ones:
Helsinki Cathedral - Uspenski Cathedral - Allas Sea Pool
- Helsinki Market Square - Old Market Hall
I followed this exact order and ended up at the Old Market Hall
for a famous bowl of traditional salmon soup for lunch!
(More on that delicious experience below.)

Helsinki Cathedral is free to enter, so I took a quick peek inside.
Compared to the ornate cathedrals in the rest of Europe, its minimalist aesthetic really stands out.

Uspenski Cathedral is fascinating because of its distinct Russian architectural style.
There's a €5 (~$5.50 USD) entrance fee to go inside,
so I opted to just admire it from the outside.
If you're curious, it's definitely worth checking out the interior!

Honestly, coming to Finland and not hitting a sauna feels like a crime.
And yes, I completely forgot to pack my swimsuit. Major regrets.
If you plan to visit a sauna during your layover,
make sure to pack a swimsuit in your carry-on!
Allas Sea Pool is the most accessible sauna right in the city center.

Helsinki Market Square is a vibrant little outdoor market
perfect for picking up local souvenirs and crafts!
Magnets here run about €5 to €8 (~$5.50–$9 USD).
This is where those infamous Nordic prices start to hit you.
Still, I couldn't leave without one, so I happily made a purchase.

You'll also find street food stalls selling dishes from all over the world.

My favorite stop was definitely the Old Market Hall.
It's a historic indoor market with beautifully decorated stalls.
You can easily check off souvenir shopping, grabbing a coffee, and eating a full meal all in one place!

They have an amazing selection of salmon dishes, traditional Nordic pastries,
and of course, tons of Moomin merchandise—an absolute must in Finland.
I had a great time just wandering the aisles and browsing.
3. Helsinki Food Recommendation: Authentic Salmon Soup
One of Finland's most famous dishes is Lohikeitto (creamy salmon soup).
There's a highly-rated spot inside the Old Market Hall,
so I stopped by for a quick, comforting lunch.

📍 SOUP+MORE Vanha Kauppahalli
Eteläranta 1, 00130 Helsinki, Finland
Located on the right side as you enter the hall, Soup+More
usually has a line, even during the off-season!

Since I had eaten breakfast not too long before, we just ordered one bowl to share.
Salmon Soup: €14 (~$15 USD)
Sharing Charge: +€2 (~$2 USD)
Total: €16 (~$17 USD)

After ordering, you can grab as much complimentary bread as you'd like,
and the staff will bring the hot soup right to your table!

The broth is slightly thin but incredibly creamy and rich in flavor.
It’s packed with hearty chunks of potatoes and fresh salmon,
giving it great texture and keeping you full for hours!
If you're eating it alone, it's definitely a very satisfying meal.
If you're in Finland, you absolutely have to try this at least once!
4. Helsinki Shopping & Souvenirs
Honestly, you can find a massive selection of Moomin and Marimekko
products at the airport duty-free shops.
You can also buy magnets at the airport, so I didn't feel
a strong urge to do heavy souvenir shopping in the city.
However, I stumbled upon this store while walking, and it was a gem!
📍 Iittala & Arabia Store Esplanadi
Pohjoisesplanadi 23, 00100 Helsinki, Finland

If you're a fan of elegant ceramics and dishware, this is a must-visit.
They have a stunning collection of beautifully designed Nordic tableware!

They also carry a ton of Moomin-themed dinnerware.
Pro tip: Head straight to the discount section in the back!
You can score some amazing deals on these high-quality pieces.

Returning to Finland to see the Northern Lights and visit Santa Claus Village
up north is definitely still on my bucket list!
But for a quick layover, one day in Helsinki is the perfect amount of time.
It's incredibly easy to navigate to and from the airport,
so if you have a few hours to spare, I highly recommend stepping out to explore!
