My Ultimate 5-Day Finland Itinerary & Budget: Free PDF Guide Included!
3 Nights in Saariselkä, 1 Night in Rovaniemi
Hi everyone! At the end of November 2025, I took an unforgettable trip to Finland
for a magical 5-day, 4-night getaway.
My lifelong dream was to meet the real Santa Claus at Santa Claus Village,
and go dashing through a winter wonderland with energetic huskies on a
sled! It was my ultimate bucket-list goal. 💖
Since it's quite a trek to get all the way up there,
I found that detailed travel info was a bit hard to find. So, after experiencing it all myself,
I've compiled my detailed daily itinerary, recommended activities, and must-pack items
into a handy PDF guide to share with you all!
You can grab the free PDF download at the very bottom of this post!
Key Itinerary Highlights

My trip was booked in and out of Rovaniemi Airport (RVN).
I headed straight from Rovaniemi Airport up to Saariselkä,
spent 3 nights there, returned to Rovaniemi for a final 1-night stay,
and then flew back home.
Interestingly, Rovaniemi's main draw is Santa Claus Village,
and there wasn't a huge variety of other wild activities right in town.
However, if you're serious about Northern Lights hunting,
Rovaniemi actually offers a much wider range of tour options than Saariselkä!
That being said, I wanted that deep-winter forest vibe, so I spent most of my trip in Saariselkä.
My main highlights there were staying in an Aurora Cabin at Northern Lights Village,
going on a husky safari, and visiting the longest toboggan run in the world!
It was absolutely magical.

Here is the breakdown of Day 1.
After landing at the airport, I took an Uber straight to the Rovaniemi
bus station.
This was to catch my long-distance bus heading up to Saariselkä!~

If you're in a hurry after arriving at the airport,
calling an Uber is a great choice.
The airport shuttle bus is €8 per person,
but my Uber ride directly to the city center cost me €19.
The best part about Uber is that it drops you off exactly
at your exact destination...
If you're traveling as a duo or a group, Uber is definitely worth considering!

I booked the bus to Saariselkä in advance through the official website.
It took about 3 hours and 20 minutes,
but between a nice nap and catching up on my phone, I didn't feel bored at all.
I've embedded plenty of Google Maps links directly in the PDF guide.
That way, if you see a spot you like or want to save,
you can just click and add it directly to your map.
Keep this in mind when you're looking through the file!~
You can find the rest of the itinerary details in the PDF!
Must-Try Activity Recommendations

There's a dedicated section for my top activity recommendations.
But one major thing I learned on this trip is...
catching the Northern Lights in Finland can be pretty tough.
Maybe because of high solar activity in recent years,
there were so many successful aurora stories, and I was sure I'd catch them too.
But around late November, the cloud cover was just too thick...
The aurora index was actually incredible, but the clouds blocked the entire show...

Also, the Aurora Border Tour I took through Northern Lights Village
was literally driving to a set border area,
sitting around a campfire, chatting, and waiting
for the lights to show up... 😂
If seeing the auroras is an absolute MUST for you,
make sure to choose a tour that actively includes the word "Hunting," like the one below.
Only with "Hunting" tours will the guides drive around chasing clear skies.
Standard "aurora tours" usually just take you to a fixed spot
and wait there for the lights to hopefully appear.

And don't miss the toboggan run!! I debated whether to buy a ski lift pass
or just rely on the €6 shuttle bus to get up and down.
But looking at the timetable,
I calculated that even with just the bus, I could get in 4 runs—maybe even 5 if I rushed
(assuming you walk back to your cabin at the end!).

We decided to take the bus and ended up riding it 4 super fun times!
There was a bit of a gap during the lunch break, but other than that,
it was just a non-stop cycle of riding the bus and sledding.
During the lunch break, I tried that famous salmon soup at the summit,
and time just flew by.
Here is how to read the ski bus timetable!
First, let me share the ski bus timetable
I captured at the end of November 2025.
This timetable is valid until April 12, 2026.

See the stop labeled KAUNISPAAN HUIPPU /
STAR ARCTIC HOTEL at 11:35?
That is the summit of the sledding slope.
That's where you start your epic ride down!
And do you see SAARISELKA SKI&SPORT RESORT at 11:15?
That's the spot where you end up after sledding down and wait for the bus again.
The route can be a little confusing, so let me break down the exact path I took:
11:05 AM - Board the bus at Northern Lights Village
11:15 AM - Stop at SAARISELKA SKI&SPORT RESORT
(If you want to buy a lift ticket or rent sledding gear, get off here!)
11:35 AM - Get off at KAUNISPAAN HUIPPU / STAR ARCTIC HOTEL
Sled all the way down from here, zoom~~
11:55 AM - Board the bus at SAARISELKA SKI&SPORT RESORT
12:10 PM - Get off at KAUNISPAAN HUIPPU / STAR ARCTIC HOTEL
You could sled right back down, but... you'll run into the ski bus lunch break!
So we played in the snow, had a snowball fight, devoured some delicious salmon soup,
and then sledded down afterward,
boarding again at SAARISELKA SKI&SPORT RESORT at 14:20...
And that's how it works!
It took me about 8 minutes to sled all the way down,
and that includes stopping along the way to take photos.
But that's if you go pretty fast without too many long stops!
Accommodations
For accommodations, we went with the classic, tried-and-true combo:
the budget-friendly Holiday Club &
the aurora-view Northern Lights Village.
(For Rovaniemi, we stayed in an Airbnb!)

Holiday Club is in a fantastic location with very reasonable prices.
It's an absolutely flawless budget hotel, so I highly recommend it.

The Northern Lights Village has a pretty eye-watering price tag,
but it's a slice of heaven where you can watch the Aurora Borealis right from your bed.
Even if the Northern Lights don't make an appearance, I had so much fun there.
Since it's such a romantic and magical place,
I highly recommend checking it out!
Travel Expenses

Our expenses for 5 days and 4 nights came to about ~$2,343 for two people, which was quite...
a hefty sum.
As expected, Northern Europe's cost of living is no joke.
You can check out the detailed breakdown of our budget in the PDF.
Transportation

Surprisingly, Google Maps wasn't always accurate in Finland!
There were times I had to cross-check with local transit websites.
I've included the links and info for all the websites I used in the PDF.
You can download the PDF guide I put together via TeraBox.
Don't worry, it's not a sketchy website...
It's just a cloud storage service, similar to Google Drive or Dropbox!
You can download it with peace of mind.

Happy travel planning, everyone! Here's to your next amazing adventure!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get from Rovaniemi Airport to Saariselkä, and how long does it take?
First, travel from Rovaniemi Airport to the city bus station, then take a bus pre-booked on the official website to Saariselkä. You can reach the bus station by airport bus (8 euros per person) or Uber (approx. 19 euros). The bus ride to Saariselkä takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes.
What kind of tour should I book to increase my chances of seeing the Northern Lights in Finland?
Instead of a standard tour that waits at a fixed spot, you must choose an aurora tour that includes "hunting." With a hunting tour, professional guides move around to find cloudless areas, which significantly increases your chances of observation.
How can I enjoy sledding at the Saariselkä sledding hill without a lift ticket?
By paying 6 euros for the ski bus, you can sled more than four times a day without a lift ticket. You can ride your sled down from Kaunispään Huippu at the top of the hill for about 8 minutes, and then take the bus back up from the Saariselkä Ski & Sport Resort bus stop.
What is the total cost for two people for a 4-night, 5-day trip to Finland, including 3 nights in Saariselkä and 1 night in Rovaniemi?
The total cost for two people for this 4-night, 5-day itinerary is ~$2343. This amount reflects the high cost of living in Northern Europe. Detailed expenditure records can be found in the PDF file shared via TeraBox.
