Scandic Grand Central: Your Stay Near Helsinki Central Station

This time, while transiting through Finnair on my way to Lisbon, Portugal, I had a long layover on the return journey. So, I decided to make the most of it and explore Helsinki, booking a layover hotel for one night right by the Central Station!
Wow... stepping off the train at Central Station from the airport, I was amazed! The hotel was right next door, making the location absolutely perfect. The room itself was so cozy, I had the most wonderful night's sleep on my last day!
And get this – in Finland, where things can be pricey, their breakfast was absolutely delicious! I was completely satisfied with my one-night stay here :D For anyone else with a layover, definitely keep this gem in mind!

1. Location & Why I Chose It
Since this was a layover, if you're looking for a spot with super easy access to and from the airport, then staying near Helsinki Central Station is absolutely the way to go!
The train ride from the airport to Central Station is just 30-40 minutes, which makes getting around a breeze. Plus, all the major city attractions are totally walkable from there – it’s absolutely perfect!

While there are many hotels around Central Station, this one truly stands out! Imagine, it's barely a 1-2 minute stroll with your suitcase from the station to the hotel?
It's incredibly close, with taxis right outside, and it's so well-lit, which made me feel really safe and secure!
In fact, I arrived around 12:30 AM, and because it was so bright, I didn't feel scared in the slightest.

While Helsinki city center might not be packed with endless sights, it's less than a 20-minute walk to the popular Allas Sea Pool!
Finnair flights to Incheon typically depart at 5:30 PM. Even if you arrive at the airport by 3 PM, you'll have plenty of time! This means you can comfortably wake up, explore the city in the morning, or even enjoy a half-day city tour before heading off.

2. Price & Booking
Based on my visit in late April, the price for a one-night stay, including breakfast for two, was in the low ~$150s! Honestly, considering the notoriously high prices in the Nordics, I thought that was pretty reasonable, wouldn't you agree? 😉
Just a heads-up, though: dining out can be quite expensive, so I seriously recommend opting for breakfast at the hotel to save yourself from sticker shock! 😉

Check-in is available from 4 PM, check-out is at 12 PM.
With such a generous check-out time, if sightseeing isn't your top priority, you could easily just relax and enjoy the hotel before heading out!
Even though I arrived past midnight, the 24-hour reception meant I could check in without any issues at all. Phew! 😉
* Oh, and a quick tip: if you need an electric kettle, be sure to request it when you check in! There wasn't one in my room, so I had to pop back out to get it later...
3. Room Condition
One thing to note (and it's a bit funny, really!) is that this hotel is absolutely massive. 😂 It's a wonderfully traditional and well-maintained establishment, but just be aware that finding your room might involve a bit of a walk!
Initially, I was like, 'Wow, is my room really that far?'
But then I realized, after stepping out of the elevator, it's all flat—no stairs at all!
So, it turned out to be much less of a hassle than I first thought.

Stepping inside, the room had such a wonderfully classic vibe,
and the wide corridors meant there was no cramped feeling at all.
I'd say it felt like a hotel that perfectly captured that chic Scandinavian aesthetic, wouldn't you agree?

Upon entering, the generous room size immediately dispelled any feeling of being cramped – a huge plus!
With a hotel size of approximately 25m2, it felt spacious enough to comfortably open even two 28-inch suitcases,
no problem at all! (Seriously, it was huge!)
Since I'd already checked most of my luggage all the way to Incheon
and just kept an overnight bag, it felt even more expansive.
Right by the entrance, you'll find the bathroom and a grand full-length mirror,
and, on either side, convenient chairs and tables to easily set down your smaller bags and essentials!

The bathroom, styled in a chic black and white, was spotlessly clean,
and the amenities were surprisingly good!
What really struck me was, 'Wait, why is the bathroom floor so wonderfully warm...?'
Turns out I wasn't imagining it – it's a thing!
That lack of a cold chill on the floor before you shower was such a huge bonus for me;
it made getting ready so much more pleasant.

The bed was incredibly spacious, easily accommodating two people,
and the pillows weren't too high, which was an absolute dream for someone as picky about pillows as I am!
What's more, the bedding was so plush and inviting that, being exhausted at the tail end of my trip,
I practically melted into a blissful, deep sleep.
And here's a brilliant detail: even with one main bed, they provide a separate duvet for each person (so two single duvets!),
which made for such a comfortable night's rest.
(They do have twin rooms too, by the way, which I'd highly recommend if you're traveling with a friend!)

The room also featured a generous, long desk and a comfy sofa, which was perfect for me to
cozy up and enjoy some cup noodles! ^.^
By the end of the trip, I was seriously craving something warm and brothy.
And guess what? There were two chairs and a desk, absolutely ideal for two people to comfortably settle in and enjoy a meal together!

Just a heads-up: the mini-bar prices are pretty steep,
so I definitely wouldn't recommend using it unless you've brought your own goodies.
As someone who always opts for bottled water over tap water when traveling in Europe,
if you're like me and prefer your mineral water in a bottle,
I highly suggest picking some up beforehand. There's a 24-hour S-market right nearby,
so it's super convenient!

And yes, there was ample space for an iron and to neatly hang up all your clothes – a traveler's dream!
4. Your Go-To Spot for Breakfast in Helsinki
The breakfast operating hours do vary by day,
but don't worry, they'll let you know all the details when you check in, so you'll be all set!

Weekends are especially great because breakfast runs until a generous 11 AM!
Since it was a Saturday for me, I absolutely loved being able to sleep in a bit and then leisurely head down for a delicious meal.

On my way to breakfast, I passed by the hotel bar,
and wow, it had such a sophisticated black and wood-toned ambiance!
It looked like the perfect spot to unwind with a casual drink.
While I couldn't snap any photos inside the main dining area because it was quite busy,
rest assured, it had a similarly inviting vibe.

With gluten-free options available,
I really felt like the menu was designed with guests in mind.

Fresh salads and the staples of a European breakfast,
like ham and cheese, were incredibly diverse!

There were scrambled eggs made with eggs, and an egg and cheese soufflé-like dish (I think!),
along with bacon, ham, meatballs, sausages, roasted tomatoes, and more.
Not only was the variety impressive, but every single item was delicious...!

Beyond the healthy carrot juice and bottled water (which were a given),
there was so much variety, even including a coffee machine and warm milk!
With over four types of fruit, like watermelon and grapefruit,
it was a perfect breakfast to load up on vitamins first thing in the morning.

For dessert, I tried an apple pie that said 'Grand Hotel Only',
and it actually had real apples in it!
There were other pies too, like blueberry pie.

There was a truly massive selection of breads, cheeses, butter, and creams.
Honestly, it's rare to find a 4-star hotel with such an outstanding breakfast.
It's one of the best I've ever had, truly exceptional...!!!!
If you were to go out and just grab a bowl of salmon soup,
it would cost at least 12 Euros, which is over ~$15.
Adding breakfast was definitely the best decision I made, haha!

I had eaten so much late-night food from the supermarket the day before that
I actually thought, 'Maybe I shouldn't go for breakfast... I'm not hungry...'
But I ended up devouring a whole plate, making my earlier words completely pointless!
If you're looking for a layover hotel in Helsinki, Finland,
this place comes highly recommended for its great location, excellent facilities, and delicious breakfast...!!!!
