No matter how much I enjoy Vietnamese cuisine, after several days of pho, fried rice, and bun cha, I found myself craving something different.
That's when I decided to search for a Korean restaurant, and I discovered Samwonjung, located near Hoan Kiem Lake in District 1. It’s a branch of a well-known Korean franchise, with another location in My Dinh, Hanoi's vibrant Korean town.

Samwonjung Location

Samwonjung is conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from the north side of Hoan Kiem Lake. On my visits, over 90% of the customers were Korean, including business professionals in suits, which speaks to its authenticity and quality. It’s an ideal spot for important meetings, family meals, or simply when you’re looking for a clean and upscale dining experience.

Did you know Samwonjung is a brand created by Samwon Garden, a restaurant consistently recognized by Michelin Seoul for four years?
Interior

The interior is spotlessly clean and reflects the classic aesthetic of a traditional Korean restaurant. It’s set up with comfortable four-person tables, and the staff greets you warmly upon arrival.

While Korean restaurants abroad typically focus on barbecue, many diners, especially during lunchtime, prefer lighter options like stews or individual meals. As a solo diner, I usually lean towards stews or bibimbap when visiting Korean restaurants.
Menu

Let’s take a look at Samwonjung’s menu. They offer special lunch sets tailored for midday dining. You can choose from Bulgogi Jeongshik (Marinated Beef Set), Chadol Bokkeumbap (Stir-fried Brisket Rice), or Beef Bibimbap, with prices ranging from 190,000 VND to 290,000 VND, which are quite reasonable.

For those craving grilled meats, they have a selection of ribs and various beef cuts.

The meal options bring together a delicious array of Korean favorites, including Naengmyeon (cold noodles), Kimchi Mal-i Guksu (kimchi noodles), Galbitang (short rib soup), Doenjang Jjigae (soybean paste stew), Kimchi Jjigae (kimchi stew), and Yukhoe Bibimbap (beef tartare bibimbap). Unique items like Galbi Wanja Kkochi-gui (short rib patty skewers) and Myeongnan Mayo Gyeranjjim (cod roe mayo steamed egg) also caught my eye.

The banchan (side dishes) include kimchi, kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake), gungchae jangajji (marinated royal fern), gyeran mari (rolled omelet), and hobak muchim (seasoned pumpkin). While not a huge spread, they perfectly complement the main dishes.

Of course, for me, nothing beats a classic Kimchi Jjigae. While ordering the Chadol Bokkeumbap or Beef Bibimbap from the lunch set would have been more economical, I simply couldn't resist the spicy, hearty stew.

The side dishes were perfectly seasoned and absolutely flawless. It seems Koreans truly get a boost of energy from regularly enjoying spicy food! I felt completely refreshed.

A few days later, while deciding where to eat with a friend, Samwonjung came to mind again, so we revisited.

Our second visit was in the evening, and we ordered Chadol Bokkeumbap and Galbitang.

Wow, the flavors truly delivered! While two guys usually order individual meals, my friend and I always enjoy ordering 2-3 dishes to share. It's the best way to try more of the menu!
I hope you enjoyed this introduction to Samwonjung, the fantastic Korean restaurant in Hanoi's District 1. I’ve passed by the My Dinh branch, and since the signage is identical, I expect the menu and taste are just as excellent. Choose whichever location is most convenient for you!
