Half a Drink Shanghai Review 2026: The Bund Skewers
Discover Half a Drink, a hidden gem near the Shanghai Bund serving mouthwatering lamb skewers and cold draft beer. Experience the true local nightlife vibe!

Friday nights in Shanghai are all about finding that perfect local spot. If you're craving an authentic, bustling street-food atmosphere near the Bund, I've got just the place for you: Half a Drink.
This spot is highly rated by both locals and expats, and after visiting, I completely understand why people are willing to line up for it. Here is my full review of this must-visit late-night skewer joint in Shanghai.
1. Location & Details
📍 Half a Drink (半酌烧烤小酒馆)
278 Shan Xi Nan Lu, Huangpu Qu, Shanghai Shi, China 200001
🕐 Hours: 5:00 PM - 3:00 AM daily
👶 Kid-Friendly: No high chairs available (it has a bustling street pub vibe), and strollers must be left at the entrance.
⏳ Wait Times: Expect a wait on Fridays and weekends!
The restaurant was incredibly convenient for us. It's just a 5-minute walk (about 0.2 miles) from the Radisson Collection Hyland Shanghai Hotel on Nanjing Dong Lu where we were staying. It's the perfect spot to add to your evening itinerary after strolling along the Bund!

We visited on a Friday night, so a line was expected. We waited about 20 minutes (though I've heard it can take up to an hour during peak times). The staff calls out your number when your table is ready.
While it's not the most family-oriented restaurant, the incredible food more than made up for any inconvenience! 💛

2. The Vibe
The space is quite intimate, with only about 15 tables. During cooler months, they throw the doors wide open and set up tables outside for an epic al fresco dining experience.
Since we visited in the heat of the summer, the doors were closed and the AC was blasting.

The atmosphere inside is electric. Surrounded by the energetic chatter of locals, you immediately know you've stumbled into a genuine Shanghai hidden gem.

Seeing a diverse crowd of both locals and tourists assured us we made the right choice. We eagerly scanned the menu and placed our order.
3. Menu & Prices
The menu boasts a massive variety of skewers. Beyond their signature lamb, you'll find pork belly, corn, squid, grilled toast, and an array of vegetables.
The best part? It's incredibly budget-friendly. Each skewer costs around 3 to 8 RMB (roughly $0.40 to $1.15), so you can feast without breaking the bank!

Of course, no skewer night is complete without a cold draft Tsingtao beer, so we ordered that immediately.

Ordering is a breeze if you have Alipay. You simply scan the QR code at your table. The skewers arrive pre-grilled, which is a huge blessing in the summer—no sweating over an open flame!
They place the skewers on a mini tabletop warmer with a small fire underneath, keeping your food perfectly hot throughout the meal.

Pro tip: Make sure to order the smashed cucumber salad and grilled chives! The refreshing crispness of the cucumbers perfectly cuts through the rich, savory flavors of the meat.

4. Taste & Final Verdict
The lamb skewers were coated in a mouthwatering, mildly spicy seasoning that paired flawlessly with the crisp Tsingtao draft beer.
Both the lamb and pork belly skewers were absolute perfection, sharing a similarly addictive spice blend.

I heard their ramen is also fantastic, but we were too full to try it this time—definitely on the list for our next visit!
Taking a bite of that savory lamb followed by a gulp of cold beer instantly washed away all the travel fatigue from the day.

A quick heads-up: because it's packed with a lively local crowd, it gets quite noisy. If you prefer a quiet, romantic dinner, the bustling energy here might be a bit overwhelming.
Having visited Shanghai multiple times, I can confidently say Half a Drink offers a top-tier authentic local experience. However, it can be challenging with very young kids due to the spicy menu and tight space. It's probably best suited for adults or families with older children.

Our little one isn't a fan of spicy chili powder, so we ended up having a backup snack back at our hotel 😂
Here is my final breakdown of Half a Drink in Shanghai:

- ✅ Expect a short wait, but it is 100% worth it.
- ✅ Incredible local street-food atmosphere.
- ✅ Massive variety of skewers with guaranteed amazing flavor 👍🏻
- ✅ Super convenient ordering via Alipay.
- ✅ Fantastic location near Nanjing Road and the Bund.
- ❗ Menu options for young, spice-sensitive children are limited.
I would absolutely come back here on my next trip to Shanghai. Next time, I'm ordering double the lamb, double the pork belly, a bowl of ramen, and a full liter of draft beer! 😆
