you might find yourself facing a common dilemma
sooner than expected.
Should I rent a car, or will public transportation be enough?
If you're only exploring Fukuoka city, public transport might be fine.
But if your itinerary includes nearby cities like
Kumamoto or Mount Aso, it's a completely different story.
Especially if you're traveling with parents or children,
or if it's a family trip with a lot of luggage,
it's hard to ignore the potential travel fatigue.
We also spent quite a long time deliberating
when preparing for our last Kyushu trip.
We looked into everything: **whether to pick up a car directly at Fukuoka Airport,**
**whether to rent one from Hakata Station,**
**and even the actual travel times.**
One night in Fukuoka City

Drive to Kumamoto and Mount Aso
Ultimately, this is the route we took,
and we were quite satisfied.
However, there were also some unexpected differences.
For instance, the journey time to Mount Aso
took about an hour longer than anticipated due to construction.
Today, I'll honestly share our experience with renting a car from Hakata Station,
our 2-day, 1-night itinerary for Kumamoto and Mount Aso,
and even the actual costs and driving review.
To put it simply,
it was because of our first day's itinerary.
We arrived in Fukuoka late in the afternoon
on our first day.

Public transportation is far more convenient for getting around near your accommodation
In this scenario, renting a car directly
from Fukuoka Airport would have been
quite inefficient.
So, we spent a night at our city accommodation,
and the next morning, after picking up the car,
we headed straight out to the suburbs.
Having done it ourselves, we found this method
to be much more efficient than we expected.
Especially if you're traveling with luggage,
choosing a car rental branch close to the station
can make a significant difference in your energy levels.
When we booked our rental car,
there were many options available, including
Toyota, Times, Nissan, and JR.
Considering whether the NOC (Non-Operation Charge) waiver was included
and the convenience of return,
JR Rent-A-Car was the most convenient option.
And here's something I really want to emphasize:
Rental car prices can vary quite a bit depending on the
booking time, season, and insurance options.
Since there can be significant price differences
even for the same itinerary,
I always checked the conditions first
using price comparison platforms like
Klook or MyRealTrip
before making an actual reservation.

If you search for the actual travel time
from Fukuoka to Mount Aso,
it usually indicates about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
However, on the day we visited,
some sections of the Kyushu Expressway were under construction,
so the actual perceived travel time was much longer.
There was approximately a 30-minute to 1-hour delay,
which caused our lunch and subsequent sightseeing plans
to be pushed back little by little.
Since you never know what variables might arise,
It's safer to allow at least 30 minutes more
than the estimated travel time for your
Japan car rental itinerary.
I hope you'll definitely keep this in mind.
Our itinerary was a tough one to manage in a single day using public transport,
but renting a car made it possible.
Day 1
Pick up rental car at Hakata Station
→ Kusasenri → Nakadake
→ Aso Monzenmachi → Kurokawa
→ Stay in Kumamoto City
Day 2
Kumamoto City sightseeing
→ Fukuoka Lalaport
→ Return rental car at Hakata Station
The scenery from Mount Aso, in particular, was truly magnificent!
To get straight to the point:
It was more manageable than I expected!
At first, I made a few mistakes, turning on the wipers instead of the indicators,
but drivers were quite understanding and gave way,
so I adapted quickly.
Personally, the most helpful tip was the
'Small Left, Big Right' rule.
Turn left tight, turn right wide!
Just remembering this makes it
much easier to get used to right-hand driving.
And renting an ETC card is
highly recommended.
With an ETC card,
paying highway tolls is convenient,
and without the stress of cash payments,
you'll feel much more at ease.
If you added the ETC card option,
don't forget to confirm it
when you pick up your car.
So, how much does it actually cost
to rent a car in Fukuoka?

Of course, this can vary depending on the car class and fuel prices,
but for family trips of three or more people, or if you have a lot of luggage,
I believe a rental car trip is much more efficient
and less physically demanding than public transport.
Especially when traveling with parents or children,
travel stress is significantly reduced!
However, car rental costs can vary significantly based on booking timing,
so remember that it's definitely advantageous to compare prices in advance.
If you're planning a nature-focused Kyushu trip
like the one we just took,
a rental car trip offers truly high satisfaction.
Not being rushed by someone else's schedule,
being able to pull over in a scenic spot,
and resting whenever you want –
these were truly huge advantages.
Conversely, if these conditions apply,
I wouldn't necessarily recommend a rental car trip:
An itinerary focused on shopping in Fukuoka city center
Only one driver, and long-distance driving feels burdensome
More comfortable using public transport
However, if your itinerary includes cities near Fukuoka,
do consider renting a car from Hakata Station!
Hakata Station Car Rental Checklist
Bring international driving permit, passport, and booking confirmation
Essential to check for scratches before picking up the car
Confirm ETC card and NOC insurance
Save gas station locations before returning the rental car
Because we arrived late in the afternoon on the first day, we wanted to avoid the stress of driving in the city center and the burden of city parking fees. The next morning, we traveled to the suburbs using a JR rental car from Hakata Station, which offered a full coverage insurance (NOC) option and convenient drop-off.
When searching, it usually says about 2 hours and 20 minutes, but due to construction on the Kyushu Expressway, it was actually delayed by about 30 minutes to an hour. Since unexpected variables can occur, it is safe to allow at least an extra 30 minutes for travel time.
You can easily adapt to right-hand driving by remembering the rule: 'turn left tight, turn right wide.' Also, to reduce the hassle of paying with cash, it is highly recommended to rent an ETC card when picking up the vehicle.
The total cost was 24,507 JPY, which included the JR rental car fee of 12,600 JPY and fuel cost of 3,467 JPY. This amount also includes Kyushu Expressway tolls and parking fees at places like Kusasenri and Nakadake.
