If you've visited Fukuoka a few times, you've probably caught a whiff of that irresistible, savory bread aroma wafting through Hakata Station.
I've been to Fukuoka about three times myself, and it wasn't until my most recent trip in 2026 that I finally experienced the famous Il Forno del Mignon.
The Il Forno del Mignon shop is conveniently located on the first floor of Hakata Station, near the central ticket gates. It's one of those spots you just naturally stumble upon as you pass through.
Every time I'd seen it before, there was a massive crowd, so I never dared to brave the line. But this time, for some reason, the queue was surprisingly short! Upon closer inspection, I realized the store is actually divided into two sections.
The left side of the store offered more unique croissant flavors like mentaiko (spicy cod roe), almond, and custard. The right side, however, featured the classic trio: original, chocolate, and sweet potato.
Since the line at the right-side shop was shorter than usual, my partner and I decided it was finally time to try Il Forno del Mignon's famous croissants. We were planning to pick up a rental car at Hakata Station and drive to Kumamoto, and these seemed like the perfect light breakfast or snack for the road.
Even though the line was shorter, there were still a good number of people, but the turnover rate was incredibly fast. I only waited about 7 minutes before it was my turn!
What's unique here is that they sell croissants by weight, not by individual piece.
You simply tell the staff how many you'd like, and they'll weigh them and calculate the price accordingly.

I ordered two of each flavor, and the total came out to ~$3.
There's a price list displayed in the store showing approximate prices for different quantities, which is helpful to check before ordering. Oh, and a crucial tip: this place is cash only, so make sure to have some Japanese Yen ready before you visit.
As we enjoyed them in the car on our way to Kumamoto, I found the chocolate and sweet potato flavors more appealing than the original. These croissants are quite small, a perfect two-bite size, so one or two per person makes for an ideal snack.
Even with a long line, the queue moves quickly, so if you're passing through Hakata Station, it's definitely worth a stop. I even saw the person in front of me buy 20 at once!
