Seonyudo Beach

The island's landscape is so beautiful that legend says gods used to descend here to play,
giving 'Seonyudo' its poetic name.
True to its name, Seonyudo Beach was absolutely stunning!
I used to think the West Sea of Korea was always muddy and murky,
but the water here was incredibly clear and clean.

It starts with a soft tidal mudflat but transitions into an open sandy beach.
If you're used to the deep, dramatic blues of the East Sea,
the West Sea offers a completely different, peaceful charm.
For parking, there is a public parking lot nearby.
If you visit on a weekend, you can also find open parking spaces
inside Seonyudo Middle School, so keep that in mind!

Mongdol Pebble Beach

Mongdol Beach is famous for its unique, round, smooth pebbles.
Please note that taking any pebbles home is strictly prohibited!
The flat, smooth stones are absolutely perfect for skipping stones,
making it a fun spot to play by the water.

Okdol Pebble Beach

Okdol Beach is another beautiful beach covered in smooth, round pebbles.
Personally, I loved Okdol Beach even more than Mongdol!
It features a charming seaside snack shop and a cute souvenir shop nearby,
offering delightful local bites and sights to enjoy.
If you only have time to visit one pebble beach, I highly recommend Okdol!
📍 Seonyu & You Souvenir Shop

This store is packed with high-quality, ocean-themed crafts
that are absolutely adorable and unique.

The ocean view from the shop window is stunning,
making it a lovely place to just sit and look out at the water.
📍 Okdol Super

This little snack shop sells simple bites like ramen and tteokkochi (rice cake skewers)
for very affordable prices (around ~$3 to ~$5).
It has a nostalgic, outdoor seaside food stall vibe.
I grabbed a warm cup of instant mix coffee
and just spaced out watching the ocean waves. 🩵

There is also a wooden boardwalk trail right next to the beach.
It’s completely flat and easy to walk,
perfect for a light stroll while enjoying the open sea breeze.
However, parking here can be extremely difficult!
I managed to find a tight spot near a restaurant called 'Seonyudo Badatga,'
but since there is no official designated parking lot,
be prepared to search patiently on weekends!

Jangjado Island Hotteok
From Seonyudo, it takes less than 10 minutes to drive to Jangjado Island.
Jangjado is famous for its lively 'Hotteok Village.'
It has the charming feel of a small local market street.
It’s a great place to satisfy your snack cravings
and walk around since the area is relatively compact.

There is also a pedestrian bridge with glass panels overlooking Seonyudo and the ocean.
It’s a simple walk, but it offers a beautiful panoramic view of Gunsan’s coastal scenery.

The most famous snack here is the 'Gamtae Hotteok' (sweet pancake topped with savory sea moss).
You can find this original recipe sold as the 'Jangjado Hotteok'
exclusively at [Jangjado Hotteok Village No. 1].

Honestly, I didn't have massive expectations, but this was incredibly delicious!
The combination of savory gamtae and sweet hotteok filling works surprisingly well.
The oceanic, salty flavor of the gamtae perfectly cuts through the sweet, rich dough,
creating an amazing sweet-and-savory balance.
Because Jangjado Hotteok Village No. 1 is extremely popular, it gets very crowded.
If you prefer a more comfortable, aesthetic cafe setting,
[Hotteok Cafe Guum] is also a great option.
However, their hotteoks are pre-made rather than freshly griddled, which is a slight downside!

We went inside Cafe Guum and took a relaxing break
on the outdoor terrace overlooking the back waters of Jangjado Island.
We then grabbed our takeout Gamtae Hotteok from the No. 1 spot
to wrap up our wonderful Gunsan trip!

Gunsan is a historic local city packed with coastal charm!
I completely understand why it is such a popular weekend destination.
The historic downtown area has so many unique sights to offer,
and the connected islands make for a fantastic scenic drive.
If you're planning a 2-day, 1-night trip, I highly recommend spending one day downtown
and the other day exploring these beautiful seaside islands!
I will be back soon with more hidden local travel gems in South Korea! ♡
