For those of you planning a Sydney trip,
who spend most of your time exploring outside,
are you looking for the most affordable accommodation possible?
Today, I'm excited to introduce a fantastic option for you:
a city hotel with an excellent location and incredible value for money,
The Great Southern Hotel!

The Great Southern Hotel is a budget-friendly hotel located in downtown Sydney,
right opposite Central Station.
Plus, with a bar on the ground floor,
you can enjoy a great evening vibe without having to go far.
While official check-in is from 2 PM,
early check-in was possible if rooms were available.
In fact, we went to drop off our luggage around 11:30 AM,
and they checked us in right away!
Let me explain the hotel's location with a map.
It's located approximately a 3-minute walk from Central Station,
Sydney's main transport hub.
👉🏻 This means it's perfect for traveling to the suburbs or North Sydney,
and with the tram stop right outside, getting around the city center is super convenient.
What's more, it's near Chinatown, so you'll find plenty of Asian restaurants,
and it's great for souvenir shopping at Paddy's Market right next door.
Despite its unbeatable location,
the accommodation cost is quite affordable, typically in the ~$69 range.

Next, I'll walk you through the hotel check-in process and lobby.
The lobby boasted a rather luxurious wood tone,
and, as an older hotel, it was filled with vintage items.
You could truly feel the antique charm.
And for good reason — this place was built all the way back in
1903, they say!
If you look at the framed pictures in the lobby, you can see the hotel's
actual old appearances.
This particular photo is from the 1930s,
and it was surprising how little it has changed since then.
You might be thinking, "Aren't the rooms old too?", but
luckily, they were remodeled in 2009.
Next, I'll explain the check-in process.
After confirming your reservation and passport at the reception,
Time to check in!
Upon check-in, you'll review and sign the accommodation etiquette guidelines,
similar to what you see in the photos below, and then you'll receive your key.
Just to point out one key detail among them:
Complimentary room cleaning service is not provided during your stay.
However, you can request fresh towels at the reception desk at no extra charge during your stay,
and room cleaning, if requested, costs 10 AUD per session.
Other than these points, there are no special rules,
so you can enjoy your stay just like at any standard hotel.
Once you've completed check-in, you can take the elevator
on the left side of the reception area up to your room.
One thing I absolutely loved about this hotel was
the water dispenser on the first floor!
Water in Australia can be quite expensive, so throughout my trip,
I'd mostly been drinking lukewarm tap water every day.
But here, I could quench my thirst with refreshing, cool water to my heart's content!
Next, I'll show you the **Standard Room** where I stayed.
My assigned room was 418. Unlike the lobby,
the hallway definitely showed its age a bit.
The room's interior, similar to the hallway, featured a toned-down design,
creating a comfortable and cozy atmosphere.
The room layout featured a single bed in the center.
While the overall space wasn't as generous as some other accommodations, I was still
able to comfortably open two 24-inch suitcases.
Inside, the amenities included a table and chair,
hangers, ironing facilities, cups, a refrigerator, and more.
It was quite surprising to find an iron, even in a hotel room!
And while the table was small, it was perfect for enjoying some late-night snacks I picked up.
The bathroom had a decent amount of space.
The shower was separated by glass, preventing water from splashing, and I liked that shampoo was provided in small sample bottles.
However, the showerhead was fixed,
which felt a bit inconvenient.
Other than that, the sink and toilet were perfectly fine, with no particular issues.
It was very useful during my stay.
On the hotel's first floor, there was also a restaurant operating where you could grab breakfast.
From the diverse menu, it looked like it operated as a regular restaurant, not just for hotel guests.
My takeaway from staying at the Great Southern Hotel? It's 'pretty good when you factor in the location and the price.'
It's not a brand new hotel with fancy amenities, but being so close to Central Station and Chinatown, and costing around ~$69 a night, definitely made it appealing.
And personally, there was also the unique experience of being able to stay at a place with over a century of history.
One minor drawback is that you can't cook in your room. So, if whipping up your own meals daily is a must, even with its great value, I wouldn't recommend it.
If you're looking for an affordable hotel because you'll be out exploring all day, you're a budget-conscious backpacker, or you just need a comfy spot for your first or last night, then the Great Southern Hotel is a solid choice.
