We were looking for a lunch spot and heard about a popular place nearby. Traveling in Southeast Asia, especially with the warm weather, often means I'm not super hungry, so I sometimes miss meal times. On this particular day, we found ourselves heading there around 2:00 PM, well past the typical lunch rush.
The restaurant was Goc Ha Thanh, located right in the city center. It's quite well-known, especially among Korean tourists, but we noticed a good mix of Westerners too. When we first arrived, the place was packed, with a considerable waitlist. We decided to skip it for the time being and try somewhere else.
Later that evening, we found ourselves back near Goc Ha Thanh. We hadn't specifically planned to return, but as we walked by, we noticed it was almost empty. It was about 30 minutes before closing time. We figured we'd try our luck – if they were still serving, great; otherwise, we'd find another spot. Luckily, they welcomed us in, and we were the only customers there.
With limited time, we quickly placed our order.
Goc Ha Thanh's menu is available at your table, and there's also one outside the entrance for browsing. We picked a few of their popular dishes, including the ones marked with stars, along with Nem Nuong and spring rolls.
The first two dishes arrived quickly, followed by the others shortly after.
Visually, everything looked appealing. However, after taking a bite... well, it was okay.
It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite live up to the 'must-try Da Lat restaurant' hype, leaving us a bit underwhelmed. (Of course, taste is subjective, so take this with a grain of salt!)
I recall there's another famous Nem Nuong spot near the train station that I'd like to try for comparison.
My travel companions and I were all wondering, 'Why is this place considered a Da Lat hotspot?' as we ate.
We noticed one of the kitchen staff nearby seemed a bit stern, so we quickly quieted down and finished our meal.
It's good to remember that many people in Vietnam, especially in tourist areas, might understand English, so it's always wise to be mindful of conversations.
Plus, Da Lat University even has a Korean language department, so you never know!

It's not an early opener, so keep that in mind for breakfast or an early lunch.
When I travel, I love exploring local eateries. If I find a place I truly enjoy, I'll share it; otherwise, I usually just move on.
If Goc Ha Thanh wasn't so widely acclaimed, and I'd just stumbled upon it as a random local spot, I probably wouldn't have bothered writing about it.
However, if you're keen on checking off all the 'famous' spots in Da Lat, it might be worth a visit, though I'd temper your expectations regarding the taste.
(Again, it's not bad, just not outstanding, and taste is so personal!)
One possibility is that our late-night visit, right before closing, might have affected the experience.
If I get another chance, I'd definitely try to visit during peak lunch or dinner hours, as it always seemed busy during the day.
So, that's my honest take on Goc Ha Thanh, one of Da Lat's supposedly 'famous' Vietnamese restaurants.
