Planning a trip to Gero Onsen? Discover why booking a stay at the 190-year-old Yamagataya Ryokan through local platforms unlocks the ultimate experience.
When planning a trip to Japan, especially to smaller towns or traditional hot spring (onsen) villages,
figuring out where to stay can be the most challenging part.
While global sites like Agoda or Trip.com are incredibly popular,
after multiple trips to Japan, I've realized something crucial:
"Japanese domestic travel platforms offer a completely different level of service."
When it comes to booking traditional ryokans in hidden-gem onsen towns,
Rakuten Travel is my absolute go-to.

For my recent getaway,
I booked an unforgettable stay at a ryokan in Gero Onsen
using the Rakuten platform.
Nagoya Accommodation: Gero Onsen Ryokan Rakuten Booking Review |
1. Why Use Rakuten Travel? |
2. Yamagataya Ryokan Stay Review |
Rakuten Travel is operated by Rakuten,
Japan's largest e-commerce conglomerate.
Because it's heavily used by Japanese locals,
it has an overwhelming advantage when it comes to domestic bookings.
The biggest difference you'll notice
is the sheer volume of available accommodations.
You'll find boutique hotels in small towns, traditional ryokans in onsen villages,
and even local guesthouses (minshuku) that simply don't exist on global sites.
It's particularly strong for ryokan bookings.
If you've booked a ryokan before, you know
they usually include breakfast and a traditional multi-course Kaiseki dinner.

When you book through Rakuten,
you can actually select your specific Kaiseki menu during the booking process.
This level of customization is rarely possible on other platforms.

Rakuten also supports a wide variety of Japanese-style accommodation plans.
Even for the exact same room, you can choose from:
Breakfast-inclusive plans
Early check-in options
Early bird discounts
The flexibility is incredible.
If you look closely,
you can tailor the exact same room to fit your specific travel needs.
Since Rakuten is a local platform,
booking errors or missing reservations are incredibly rare.
It just gives you that extra peace of mind when traveling abroad.
During my trip to the Nagoya region, I visited Gero Onsen
and stayed at the historic Yamagataya ryokan.
The main reason I chose this specific inn
is its incredible 190-year history.

While large, modern chain ryokans are popping up everywhere these days,
I personally prefer the authentic charm of these older, traditional inns.
It was exactly what I was looking for.
Yamagataya is located
right on the banks of the Hida River, which flows through the heart of Gero Onsen village.
Whether you're in your room or the large public bath,
you get sweeping, unobstructed views of the river.

I visited during early winter,
so the landscape was a bit stark,
but visiting now in the spring of 2026, the scenery would be absolutely breathtaking.

We booked a room for three, and it was surprisingly spacious.
You could really feel the classic, timeless atmosphere that only a historic ryokan can provide.

The large public bath (daiyokujo) was pristine,
and they even offer complimentary ice cream to cool down after a hot soak.

It's the little details like this that really elevate the experience!

The Kaiseki dinner exceeded all expectations.
Not only was the quality top-notch,
but because we booked a plan that included the regional specialty, Hida beef,
we didn't even have to leave the inn to hunt down a local restaurant.
Enjoying Gero Onsen's famous delicacies right in our ryokan was incredibly convenient.

Breakfast was also beautifully presented and delicious,
making the overall dining experience highly satisfying.
I booked this ryokan through Rakuten Travel,
and it reaffirmed my belief that Rakuten is the ultimate platform for booking ryokans in places like Nagoya and Gero Onsen.
✅ Ability to select specific dinner menus
✅ Wide variety of accommodation plans
✅ Access to early bird discounts
Being able to compare
different conditions for the exact same room is a massive advantage.
For Yamagataya, I deliberately chose the Hida beef dinner plan
and took advantage of an early bird discount to secure a great rate.
Ryokan prices can vary wildly depending on the plan,
so comparing options before booking is essential.
