Located in Busan's vibrant Seomyeon
Gakbang Seomyeon Main Branch
Gakbang Seomyeon Main Branch is tucked away on a charming side street. Seomyeon, for those unfamiliar, is one of Busan's most vibrant and happening districts, packed with things to see and do! This donburi spot has been a beloved fixture in Seomyeon for 8 years, a testament to its enduring popularity.

To get there, take Subway Line 2 to Seomyeon Station and use either Exit 8 or 12. This place is known for its crowds, but don't let that deter you! The turnover is quite good, so while there might be a short wait, you'll likely be seated fairly quickly – I found myself able to enter almost immediately. It's nestled on a quiet side street, offering a nice escape from the main hustle.

The restaurant itself is cozier and smaller than you might expect, perfectly fitting its name, 'Gakbang' (which can imply individual rooms or spaces). It was bustling with customers, and since all the tables were taken, we opted for the counter seating. Honestly, it's a fantastic spot if you're dining solo!
Just a heads-up: there are only about two tables that can accommodate 2-4 people, with the rest being counter seats. Keep this in mind when planning your visit!

They offer their signature donburi dishes in various sizes. Prices can vary quite a bit, ranging from approximately ~$8 to ~$19 per person. I highly recommend checking out their value-for-money discount sets!

Gakbang Seomyeon Main Branch: Salmon & Eel Donburi - My Honest Review for Solo Diners
Our Seomyeon Lunch Experience
On this visit, we ordered the Fresh Salmon Donburi and the Freshwater Eel Donburi (Big size) and shared them between two people. (Note: The presentation might differ slightly from previous visits). Each dish is beautifully served as a neat individual set, earning high marks for visual appeal. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual, satisfying meal.
Fresh Salmon Donburi

As a huge salmon lover, I was really looking forward to the Fresh Salmon Donburi! The salmon had a subtle, less vibrant red hue. While the first bite was wonderfully tender, the inherent richness of the fish, likely Norwegian salmon known for its fatty belly and back cuts, made it a bit heavy as I ate more, which was a little disappointing. The portion size also felt a bit on the smaller side. I ended up asking for extra wasabi to cut through the richness!
The paler, less vibrant pink hue in salmon usually indicates a higher fat content, common in Norwegian farmed salmon or from fattier cuts like the belly and back. Alternatively, if it's prepared using the 'konbujime' method, where it's cured in kelp, the moisture loss can also result in a more subtle color.
Why Salmon May Have a Muted Color
Freshwater Eel Donburi

I believe we chose the Big size for the Freshwater Eel Donburi. The tare sauce coating the eel was perfectly sweet and savory, clinging deliciously to each bite. What I particularly appreciated was that there were no annoying bones to deal with, which can sometimes be an issue with eel dishes elsewhere. Overall, the freshwater eel donburi was a decent, satisfying choice!
If you tackle a whole big portion by yourself, it might lean a bit on the rich side.
(But then again, any dish can start to feel a bit heavy if you eat too much of it alone, right?)

Overall Verdict & Special Offers

Aside from both dishes being on the richer side (even sharing between two, we felt it), they were quite enjoyable. I'd recommend balancing your order if you're sensitive to rich flavors. Also, the portion sizes felt a bit small.
While we enjoyed our meal, no place is absolutely perfect! If you're visiting Seomyeon with friends or on a trip, I'd still recommend Gakbang for a tasty and convenient lunch.

Don't forget to grab these valuable benefits before your visit!

2. Arrive early for a 'first come, first served' coupon for a mini salmon sashimi plate (limited to 10 per day, so it's great for early birds!)
3. If you're a frequent visitor, collect their loyalty stamps: get a free side set for 5 stamps, or a complimentary donburi for 10 stamps!
If you're looking for a neatly presented Japanese set meal in Jeonpo-dong, Seomyeon, Gakbang is definitely worth a visit. You can find more details on reservation events, limited-time coupons, and real-time store updates via their official channels.
After a rich Japanese meal, a refreshing coffee or a clean-tasting tea is often just what you need to cleanse your palate, right?! I highly recommend Cong Cafe, a chain located right in the heart of Seomyeon. It's super accessible for shopping, other eateries, or activities, making it a perfect follow-up spot.
After a satisfying meal at Gakbang or another great Seomyeon restaurant, you can take a leisurely stroll, do some exploring, and then pop into Cong Cafe! I've included it as a recommendation because combining the two makes for a fantastic outing.
