This time, I'm excited to share our first stop on a recent Busan trip: the incredible Gamcheon Culture Village.

After picking up our rental car from Busan Station, we headed straight for this vibrant spot. The sight of those brightly colored houses stacked like LEGOs up the hillside instantly showed us why this village is so famous. It's truly a sight to behold!

In this post, I'll cover everything you need to know: how to get there, parking tips, a brief introduction, and the must-see spots to make your visit unforgettable.😀

🕒 Operating Hours: The village itself is always open, but shops and boutiques typically operate from 09:00 AM to 06:00 PM.

🅿️ Parking: Gamcheon Culture Village Public Parking Lot (Busan Education History Museum, 130 Okcheon-ro)

We opted for a rental car from Busan Station, and it was a smooth 20-minute drive, making it a perfect first stop on our itinerary.

Keep in mind that the village is nestled on a hillside, so be prepared for some pretty steep inclines, whether you're driving or walking.

💡Parking Tips

The public parking lot is quite affordable, costing approximately ~$0 for 10 minutes, ~$0 for an hour, and around ~$2 for a full day. However, this is a very popular spot, so the lot tends to fill up quickly, especially in the mornings. To guarantee a spot and enjoy a relaxed visit, I highly recommend arriving early!

The Gamcheon Culture Village Public Parking Lot (located at the Busan Education History Museum) is right at the entrance, making it the most convenient option. We arrived around 02:00 PM and were lucky enough to snag one of the last few spots.

Trust me, you'll want to park as close to the top as possible. Walking uphill from the lower sections can be exhausting, especially during the hot summer months!🥵

Here, you can purchase a stamp map for about ~$1 and leisurely explore the village by following the designated course.

💡Public Transportation

From Busan Station, you can take local bus Saha 2-2.

If you're coming by subway, take Line 1 to Toseong-dong Station (Exit 6). From there, catch a local bus (Saha 1-1, Seo-gu 2, or Seo-gu 2-2) from in front of Busan University Hospital Cancer Center. The bus ride takes about 10 minutes.

Alternatively, from Goejeong Station on Line 1 (Exit 6), cross to the opposite side of Newcore Outlet at Goejeong 4-way Intersection and take local bus Saha 1 or Saha 1-1. This route takes approximately 20 minutes.

The recommended bus stop for disembarking is "Busan Education History Museum Public Parking Lot."

You'll find public restrooms and a map of Gamcheon Culture Village right at the entrance, which are helpful for planning your visit.

Gamcheon Culture Village has a poignant history, originating as a settlement for refugees during the Korean War in the 1950s.

With its pastel-colored houses densely packed in a staircase-like formation along the hillside and its labyrinthine alleyways, it's often affectionately called 'Korea's Machu Picchu' or 'Korea's Santorini.'

Once a neglected hillside slum in Busan, it underwent an incredible transformation through an urban regeneration project infused with culture and art. Today, it stands as Busan's premier tourist attraction, drawing over 1.8 million visitors annually.

The village even received the Presidential Award for Space Culture in 2016, a testament to its remarkable revitalization.

Every alley is adorned with diverse art installations, and you can even try your hand at crafts in the workshops of resident artists. This unique blend of art and charming old-world atmosphere is what truly defines the village's appeal.

You'll find plenty of these charming crafts and unique items in the souvenir shops and boutiques, making browsing a delight. I even picked up two magnets as mementos!😊

🦊 The Little Prince & Desert Fox Photo Zone

You simply can't visit Gamcheon Culture Village without seeing the iconic statues of The Little Prince and the Desert Fox. Sitting side-by-side, gazing out over the village, their peaceful silhouettes make for a truly essential photo opportunity. It’s almost a rite of passage for visitors!

Interestingly, the Little Prince statue in Gamcheon Culture Village wasn't initially created with a deep narrative connection to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel. Officially named "The Little Prince and the Desert Fox," it's a public art piece installed by artist Nainjoo in 2013 as part of a village art project, which has since become a beloved landmark of Gamcheon Culture Village.

Many also say that Gamcheon Culture Village is stunning at night! Visiting in the evening might be a wonderful idea, especially to escape the summer heat.

And for a truly special experience, the Little Prince House opened this year, 2026, commemorating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France. It's the first official Little Prince cultural exhibition hall to receive sponsorship and approval from the Saint-Exupéry Estate in France.

The museum features an exhibition area dedicated to Saint-Exupéry, a media art zone themed around the desert and roses, an immersive space to experience the world of the Little Prince, and even a photo zone with Little Prince and fox sculptures set against the backdrop of Gamcheon Culture Village. It's definitely worth a visit!

☕ Cafe Avant-garde (The Best View Cafe)

When we needed a break from walking and a respite from the sun, we stumbled upon Cafe Avant-garde.

The panoramic view of the entire village from here is absolutely breathtaking. It's a true gem!

Especially from the terrace seating, the colorful Gamcheon Village unfolds before your eyes. I certainly took plenty of photos with this incredible backdrop!📸

They offer a wide selection, from coffee and tea to even alcoholic beverages, so you can easily find something to enjoy while taking a well-deserved break from exploring the village.

The charming and colorful houses were truly beautiful, making every step of our walk a visual delight.

While the numerous uphill climbs might tire your legs a bit, the breathtaking panoramic views from the top more than compensate for the effort. I highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and making sure to experience this unique village firsthand!☺️
