Recommended Day Trip Comparison

Having explored Fukuoka a few times,

I always feel like the city center itinerary alone isn't quite enough,

so I make sure to venture out to the surrounding areas.

And among them, Yufuin is definitely the quintessential spot!

While I highly recommend spending a night in accommodation with an open-air bath,

for those eager to quickly explore several charming small towns,

a day bus tour is absolutely the way to go!

Yufuin Bus Tour Comparison

There are so many bus tour companies out there,

so I've compared the ones with the most reviews, the best value for money,

and those with unique itineraries.

Rakutour (No. 1) has the most reviews.

UTour Bus (No. 2) includes Yunohana in its itinerary.

Tabibus (No. 3) is the most affordable and offers great value for money!

(I went with company No. 3)

Among these, I chose to go with Tabibus (No. 3).

I had initially booked with another company but it was canceled due to insufficient participants,

so I booked Tabibus, which has no minimum number of participants.

The guide was incredibly friendly,

and they even took great photos for us, which was wonderful!

They also allow luggage storage, and it's a large bus,

so it was really comfortable with no inconveniences, just smooth traveling.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Our first stop was Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine!

If you go to Dazaifu late in the day, most of the shops close,

so visiting in the morning is definitely the best option.

Our guide explained that the bridges on the path to the shrine

represent the past, present, and future, and apparently, you shouldn't look back after crossing them!

I couldn't help but take it seriously, so I just focused straight ahead and walked across! Haha.

This is Dazaifu's most famous ox statue.

Legend has it that if you rub the ox's head and then your own,

you'll become smarter.

And if you rub its leg, your health will improve.

Naturally, I touched both! 😉

For mochi, our guide introduced us to two spots: the original shop and a recently popular one.

The original was definitely better!

At around 180 yen each, it was easy to try without breaking the bank.

Kusu Rest Stop

Before heading to Yufuin, we made a quick stop at the Kusu Rest Stop.

The yogurt sold here is super famous,

and I was surprised by how incredibly addictive it tasted!

It's a style of yogurt I'd never tasted before...

The large one is 550 yen, and the small one is 300 yen.

If you can, grab the large one — it's truly delicious!

Yufuin

In Yufuin,

we were given about three hours of free time.

I first walked around Lake Kinrinko and took some photos before heading for a meal.

However, Yufuin has so many popular restaurants that it's actually much better to eat as soon as you arrive.

Our guide had sent us a map of great restaurants via KakaoTalk in advance.

Among them, I chose to go to a place called Kappa Shokudo.

It's a Japanese home-style restaurant famous for its fried chicken and hirekatsu (pork fillet cutlet).

I waited for about 30 minutes, but it was absolutely delicious!

Unlike the bustling cities of Fukuoka and Osaka, Yufuin's streets felt distinctly local and authentic, which I absolutely loved!

They also sell tons of delicious treats. :)

If you're visiting Yufuin Floral Village as part of a bus tour,

definitely don't expect what you see on Instagram.

It gets incredibly crowded, so you won't be able to take leisurely photos.

Still, there are plenty of merchandise shops for Harry Potter, Ghibli, and more,

so it's fun to browse around.

If you want to explore at a more relaxed pace, you can actually get off the tour in Yufuin and stay overnight — I highly recommend it!

Mount Yufu

We only took a quick photo at Mount Yufu.

While it's magnificent in spring and summer, covered in lush greenery,

it was a bit desolate in winter.

Kamado Jigoku Hot Spring

Our final stop was Beppu's Kamado Jigoku.

With boiling hot water around 100 degrees Celsius and volcanic smoke erupting,

the scene truly lives up to its name, resembling hell itself.

The staff walked around and performed for us,

and they even threw in some Korean phrases, which was really fun! Haha

After enjoying the onsen eggs and Ramune soda they provided,

I also tried a foot bath in the hot spring water.

It was hotter than I expected, but since it was a cold winter day,

it was wonderful to warm myself up.

After even sampling the hot spring water,

the tour concluded with our arrival back in Hakata!

Dazaifu, Yufuin, and Beppu –

I was worried that a schedule covering all these places in just one day

might be too physically demanding,

but the convenient transportation made it much better than I expected.

This Fukuoka suburban bus tour is something I'd recommend for anyone,

whether you're traveling with your partner, family, or even your parents!
