It's practically a rule: if you're in Fukuoka, you simply must indulge in a bowl of authentic tonkotsu ramen. My boyfriend is a huge fan, and he recently ventured out for a late-night ramen fix by himself – he came back raving about it! So, this time, I'm excited to introduce you to Menya Gaga Tenjin, an incredible spot in Tenjin that's perfect for a delicious meal, even late into the evening.

Menya Gaga isn't immediately visible from the main road. You'll need to venture down a small alleyway between buildings to find its entrance.
Just look for the prominent 'GAGA' sign at the alley's entrance, then follow it straight back, and you'll easily spot the restaurant.

I visited around 8 PM and was lucky enough to walk right in without any wait. If there's a queue, the process is simple: write your name on the board inside the restaurant, then step back outside to wait for your turn.

The interior was surprisingly spacious, though the number of seats felt a bit modest for the overall size. Still, with options ranging from single counter seats to four-person tables, it's a great spot whether you're dining solo or with companions.

Each table comes equipped with water, chopsticks, and napkins. Menus are also readily available at every seat, and thankfully, they include English translations, making ordering a breeze.

The basic ramen starts at 940 JPY, which feels like a very reasonable price for a satisfying meal in Fukuoka. You can also customize your bowl with additional toppings like egg, chashu (pork belly), wood ear mushrooms, or green onions. They also offer sides like gyoza, rice dishes, and alcoholic beverages, perfect for rounding out your meal.

I ordered the Chashu Ramen for 1,140 JPY. Just looking at it, it vaguely reminded me of Ichiran ramen. As it turns out, Menya Gaga's founder actually received the ramen recipe from the original founders of Ichiran before opening Menya Gaga in Ogori in 2013. No wonder it felt so familiar!

The Chashu Ramen comes with three types of chashu: regular, grilled, and finely shredded. While the texture differences weren't drastically huge, I personally preferred the thicker, more substantial regular chashu over the thinner cuts.

But the real game-changer here is the vibrant red seasoning paste nestled in the center of the bowl. Its spicy, pungent kick brilliantly cuts through the richness inherent in tonkotsu broth.
This meant I could enjoy the deep, flavorful tonkotsu ramen from start to finish without ever feeling overwhelmed or greasy.

I chose a medium noodle firmness, and it was just right – not too hard, not too soft, hitting that perfect sweet spot. Since I had this as a late-night snack, the portion size was ideal. However, if you're looking for a full meal with just ramen, you might find it a little light.
If you're particularly hungry, I'd recommend adding extra noodles or ordering a side dish to complement your ramen.

I polished off the entire bowl! Truly, a trip to Fukuoka isn't complete without a hearty bowl of tonkotsu ramen. If you're searching for tonkotsu ramen in Fukuoka, have already tried Ichiran, and are wondering what other gems are out there, Menya Gaga is definitely worth a visit.
The broth is rich, yet the spicy red paste ensures it's never heavy, and the prices are incredibly reasonable – I left feeling completely satisfied. So, instead of always heading to Ichiran on your Fukuoka trips, why not try Menya Gaga for a richer, spicier alternative this time around?
I personally highly recommend it!
