Are you perhaps in Fukuoka,
looking for a local izakaya that's less crowded with tourists
and more frequented by locals?
If so, you might want to check out
Robata Kappo Izakaya Sukai, where I recently visited!
On the first day of my Japan trip, right after arriving in Fukuoka,
I booked this izakaya for an early dinner/late lunch kind of meal.
Robata Kappo Sukai 炉端割烹 主海
Hours: 17:00 ~ 24:00
Last Order: Food 23:00, Drinks 23:30
Card Payment Available
It's about a 5-minute walk from Tenjin-Minami Station,
located in the Haruyoshi bar district.
As night falls, the street lights up, one by one,
creating a wonderful atmosphere without being overly crowded with tourists,
which I absolutely loved.
I booked it right away because I truly appreciate this kind of local vibe.

You can make reservations through Hot Pepper or Tabelog,
so just choose whichever method is most convenient for you.
!! Be aware that AutoReserve charges exorbitant fees !!
It's one of the platforms I absolutely avoid using.

Right after arriving in Fukuoka,
I made a reservation for the earliest slot, for that 'early dinner/late lunch' vibe.
I was a little flustered because the signboard didn't have any Korean, English, or hiragana characters
(the basic phonetic Japanese script),
but it simply reads 主 (shu/main, master) and 海 (kai/umi/sea).

The interior was divided into counter seats and table seats.
It was quite quiet at first,
but as I was eating, Japanese locals started coming in for after-work gatherings,
heading towards the zashiki (low table) area.

Since I went for an early dinner,
I was a bit worried it would only have drinking snacks,
but I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of dishes available.

The drink menu also had a great selection,
and best of all, they had a Korean menu, which made ordering incredibly easy!

If you're like me and struggle to get a clear idea of what a dish is just by reading,
then referring to the menu with pictures alongside the text would be really helpful.

First up, we received the otoshi.
(Otoshi: a cover charge at Japanese izakayas that typically includes a small appetizer)
It was a seaweed salad with
It was a dish of flaked fish and onion mixed with mayonnaise,
and the seaweed salad was surprisingly delicious.
I always think the first impression of a place
starts with the otoshi (appetizer),
and this one definitely made me look forward to what was coming next!

The draft beer was Premium Malts,
and you could tell they had a good turnover
because it was so clean and had no aftertaste – pure satisfaction from the very first sip!

For our appetizers, we started with an assorted sashimi platter.
It featured tuna sushi, abalone, salmon roe, and Gomasaba,
and the rest were varieties of fish I was trying for the very first time.

When you think of Fukuoka, mackerel dishes are famously delicious.
The Gomasaba, in particular, was fantastic – absolutely no fishy taste, just clean, savory deliciousness,
so much so that my boyfriend declared it the best of the entire assorted sashimi platter!

As for me, the tuna sushi stole the show.
I have quite a sensitive palate, so if I ever detect even a hint of fishiness,
my chopsticks are usually down in an instant.
But this tuna sushi? I actually told my boyfriend not to touch it,
and devoured it all myself! Lol 👍

The Wagyu Tataki we ordered alongside it was also excellent.
If you're lucky enough to snag a counter seat,
you get to watch the chefs at work right in front of you,
and believe me, I couldn't miss capturing that fiery show on camera!

I'm usually very particular about raw or rare meats – if there's any off-putting smell,
I simply can't eat it. But this tataki was incredibly fresh and delicious, too.

We also ordered sea urchin sashimi (uni), and let me tell you about the nori (seaweed) that came with it!
Honestly, I wished I could have ordered 3 or 4 more servings
and just kept scooping it up endlessly.
The rich, melting flavor was incredible,
and I honestly couldn't feel a big difference in freshness
compared to the 'famous for uni' Sapporo.

Squid Shumai was another dish I was trying for the very first time!
They mentioned it was handmade,
and just from its look, I couldn't tell if it was a dumpling or a steamed bun – a true mandu-jinppang-ddubbang (dumpling-steamed bun mash-up)!
Personally, I'd say this dish
was delicious enough to rival even the incredible tuna sushi!

Inside, there was a whole piece of squid,
which gave it a fantastic texture and an exquisite flavor.

Since we went for dinner, I was really craving some carbs,
so we also ordered minced Honmaguro maki.
There was a generous amount of tuna inside, and it blended perfectly with the rice,
making it incredibly delicious for a kimbap lover like me.

Since I tend to visit the restroom frequently when I'm out for drinks,
I always make sure to pay close attention to the cleanliness of the restrooms.
The restroom was located inside the restaurant,
and I was pleased to see it was immaculately clean.
Overall, Robata Kappo Sky is a place I'd highly recommend
especially if you're looking for an authentic Japanese pub experience
with a genuine local vibe, rather than the more crowded, tourist-focused izakayas in Fukuoka.
If you're near Tenjin-Minami,
If you're searching for an amazing seafood restaurant
or an Izakaya with a wonderful ambiance,
you might want to consider Izakaya Sky as well.
