While searching for amazing restaurants in Fukuoka,
I stumbled upon a place that screamed, "We absolutely HAVE to go here!"
Even before our trip, I compared many restaurant lists,
and the one that really caught my eye
was "Tempura Hyori."

What made it even more special was that it's run by the owner-chef of Hakata Hisago,
a place visited by the renowned Chef Choi Kang-rok. This gave me high hopes
that we'd experience a truly exceptional meal, so I booked it as the most important dining experience
during our family trip.
To cut to the chase, if you're traveling to Fukuoka,
you absolutely MUST visit this place.
Operating Info | Restaurant Name: Tempura Hyori (天ぷら瓢離) Address: 3-13-23 Haruyoshi, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture Operating Hours: 16:00 ~ 22:00 Closed: Mondays |
01. Introducing Tempura Hyori, a Must-Visit in Fukuoka
This place is conveniently located between Tenjin and Nakasu,
making it very accessible.

Tempura Hyori is a specialized tempura restaurant that uses seasonal ingredients
from all four seasons, lightly frying them with artisanal skill.
Their unique approach involves meticulously managing the oil, batter, and temperature
to maximize the inherent flavors of the ingredients.
With a counter-centric layout, you can enjoy tempura fried right in front of you by the chef,
served at the absolute perfect moment.

.
This live dining experience, not easily found back home,
significantly boosted our satisfaction.
This is truly a place where all five senses rejoice!
02. Why We Had to Visit
What's an essential part of any trip?
A food tour, of course!
Tempura Hyori is run by the owner of Hakata Hisago,
and ✔ the fact that Chef Choi Kang-rok visited this place
really boosted its credibility for me.

Moreover, it's still known more among locals
than tourists, which made me even more excited.

03. Our Delightful Omakase Culinary Journey
6,800 JPY per person (tax excluded)
I worried about ordering since I'm not fluent in Japanese,
but they had a simple menu written in Korean,
which was incredibly helpful.
Ordering isn't difficult at all, so don't be scared! ^^

We were told a total of 13 dishes would be served, so we ordered the Omakase with high anticipation.
① Foie Gras Chawanmushi
This dish started our meal on a luxurious note, with the rich flavor of foie gras
added to a silky smooth steamed egg custard.

② Today's Sashimi
We were served seared Spanish Mackerel Sashimi (Samchi Aburi Sashimi),
and were instructed to eat it with pickled garlic chives and soy sauce.
When I tried it, oh!
The umami truly came alive.

③ Fried Shrimp Legs
Using kuruma prawns, the crispy texture was truly impressive.
They paired perfectly with plain salt.

④ Shrimp Tempura
The unique springiness of the kuruma prawns
and the lemon + salt combination is exquisite.

⑤ Asparagus Tempura
The top part with salt,
and the bottom part dipped in tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce)
makes for a delightful and unique experience.

⑥ Firefly Squid Agedashi
A dish bursting with the aroma and texture of seasonal ingredients,
it's truly special.

I had never heard of firefly squid before,
but the texture was absolutely incredible.

⑦ Aralia Sprout & Yam Tempura
A tempura dish with a delightful harmony of bitterness and tenderness,
I particularly loved its fragrant aroma.

⑧ Barracuda Ume Shiso Tempura
Dip the savory fried fish lightly in salt,

and when eaten with umeboshi (pickled plum) and shiso (perilla leaf),
a refreshing flavor is added, stimulating your appetite
and bringing your taste buds back to life.

⑨ Bamboo Shoot Dengaku
With miso paste on top, it offered a deep, rich flavor.

⑩ Wagyu Shiso Tempura
Eaten with wasabi salt,
or with lemon tentsuyu, the flavor of the meat is
absolutely beyond words!

⑪ Conger Eel Tempura
Known for its tender and delicate flavor,
I highly recommend dipping it in tentsuyu for an even more delicious experience.

⑫ Pumpkin Tempura
Aged for three months, it had a deep sweetness,
and its moist texture was wonderfully unique.

⑬ Wagyu Sukiyaki + Onsen Egg + Rice
With a perfect composition right up to the finale,
it felt like the quintessential complete course of a top Fukuoka restaurant.

"Because each ingredient has a different perfect pairing,
there's joy in trying them as recommended,
and you can enjoy them in various ways according to your taste."
Add a glass of Junmai Ginjo Sōden sake to this,
and isn't this simply heaven? ^^

The highlights of the Tempura Hyori course menu are:
✔ Changes with each season, so every visit offers
a fresh and new culinary adventure.
✔ Exquisite preparation that brings out the authentic flavors of the ingredients,
✔ And the chance to experience live counter dining,
making it undeniably one of the top recommendations on any Fukuoka gourmet list.
04. Honest Review
Tempura Hyori is run by the same owner who operates famous Fukuoka restaurants like
‘Hakata Hisago’ and ‘Japanese Sake BAR Tsukiyomi’,
And since it's operated by the same owner whose places chef Choi Kang-rok has visited,
my expectations for its quality were really high.

✔ Recently opened, it's more of a hidden local gem with no signboard,
primarily sought out by word-of-mouth among locals rather than tourists.
✔ Opening at 4 PM, if you enjoy it as your first stop,
it's perfect for a date, anniversary, or family trip
in a calm and luxurious Japanese-style setting.
