Hey there, fellow travelers! I'm Viewmallang, your go-to travel influencer.
Fukuoka is a fantastic entry point for anyone looking to explore Japan independently, and it's super popular for a good reason!
With short flight times and an excellent public transportation system, it’s the perfect city for exploring on foot or via transit.
On my last trip, I used the Fukuoka Subway Pass, and it was a game-changer – far more convenient than I expected and really helped me save on transportation costs.
Today, I'm going to give you the ultimate lowdown on the Fukuoka Subway Pass: how to buy it, its price, where to exchange it, must-visit spots, and even how to get from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station, all in one comprehensive guide!
🔎 What you'll find in this guide:
1 | Why You Need the Fukuoka Subway Pass |
2 | How to Buy & Exchange Your Fukuoka Subway Pass |
3 | Top Attractions Accessible with a 1-Day Subway Pass |
4 | Getting from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station |
1. Why You Need the Fukuoka Subway Pass

While Fukuoka's city center isn't huge, its main tourist spots are spread out, meaning you'll likely find yourself using the subway more often than you think!
Popular destinations like Hakata Station, Tenjin, and Canal City are all easily reachable by subway.

If you plan on taking the subway three or more times in a single day, a subway pass is significantly more economical than buying individual tickets.
Plus, you won't have to fuss with buying tickets every time you ride, and you can just breeze through the gates, making your travel itinerary much smoother.
It's especially handy for getting between the airport and your accommodation on your first or last day, which is why I always make sure to grab a subway pass when I visit.
2. How to Buy the Fukuoka Subway Pass

While you can purchase the Fukuoka Subway Pass locally, it’s often cheaper to book it online in advance!
I always book mine before I depart, and with just a QR code or voucher, I can exchange it right at the airport and start using it immediately.

3. Exchange Locations

If you've booked online, you can exchange your voucher for a physical ticket at the HIS counter in Fukuoka Airport's International Terminal.
📍 Exchange Location: Airport International Terminal HIS Counter
‼️ Operating Hours: 08:30 AM ~ 07:30 PM
It’s super easy to find after you clear immigration, so I was able to exchange my pass and head out right away.

✔️ If you're arriving on a late evening flight, you can also purchase the pass at the Hakata Station Tourist Information Center (pictured above). However, to make the most of your 1-day subway pass, it’s best to activate it the following day and simply buy a single ticket at the gate for your arrival day if you're getting in late.
4. Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station by Subway

When you arrive at Fukuoka International Airport, you won't find a subway station right outside. You'll need to transfer from the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal first!
① Exit the arrival hall and head right.
② Board the free shuttle bus.
③ After about a 10-minute ride, you'll arrive at the Domestic Terminal.
④ Head to the Domestic Terminal subway station and board the Airport Line.
⑤ Hakata Station is just two stops away!

The free shuttle bus runs continuously between the International and Domestic terminals, so you won't have to wait long.
Using the Airport Line makes getting to Hakata Station, and even Tenjin, incredibly fast and convenient!
5. Fukuoka Subway Pass Routes & Top Attractions

Wondering which tourist spots you can reach with your Fukuoka Subway Pass?
Here are five of my favorite places I visited using the subway pass:
1. Canal City Hakata
This iconic complex is a must-visit for shopping, dining, and its famous fountain shows – all in one place!
The evening fountain show is quite spectacular, so try to grab a prime viewing spot!

2. Ohori Park
A beautiful urban oasis, Ohori Park is a favorite among locals and perfect for a relaxing stroll.

3. Fukuoka Tower
Known for its stunning night views of Fukuoka, it's a great spot to visit, especially when combined with a trip to Momochi Seaside Park.

4. Momochi Seaside Park
Fukuoka's iconic artificial beach is a popular attraction where you can enjoy the seaside right in the city!
It’s perfect for a walk along the shore or admiring the sunset and evening views.

5. Nakasu River
As evening falls, the Nakasu River comes alive with charming food stalls (yatai) and dazzling night views, offering a quintessential Fukuoka experience!
If your travel plans are focused solely on exploring Fukuoka city, the subway pass is definitely the most efficient way to get around!
However, if your itinerary includes a trip to Dazaifu, you might also want to consider a 1-day bus pass.
