I've already found myself on a second trip to Japan this August and September, just recently!

My first summer journey to Sapporo was quite bearable, but my second, to Fukuoka,

was an intense experience, to say the least!

First off, Fukuoka's September weather hits highs of around 93°F (34°C). Not only are the

temperatures incredibly high, but being a coastal city,

the humidity is also exceptionally intense (often exceeding 80%).

As someone who grew up accustomed to sweltering summers, I can usually handle the heat. But stepping into Fukuoka city, my immediate thought was, 'The temperature feels similar, but the humidity is on another level!'

However, my personal take on a summer trip to Japan?

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but it's definitely not impossible.

You'll sweat a lot if you walk around for extended periods, and the sun is scorching. But Fukuoka itself is a city where indoor shopping and attractions far outweigh outdoor sightseeing.

If you plan your itinerary around city shopping and indoor activities, rather than focusing on outdoor sights or nearby towns, and incorporate plenty of rest stops, it's totally doable!

What to Wear

During the first part of my trip, I opted for breezy, flowy dresses to stay cool.

However, after experiencing some heat exhaustion on my second day, which involved a lot of outdoor activity, I switched to simple t-shirts and shorts for the rest of the trip. Sunscreen and a sun umbrella are absolute must-haves!

Parco Department Store

My top recommendation is Parco Department Store!

It houses various character stores featuring popular series like Crayon Shin-chan, One Piece, Sailor Moon, and Snoopy. There's also a wide array of souvenirs, so you can easily spend hours browsing without even realizing it.

In the basement, you'll find 'Motomura Gyukatsu,' a beloved spot that many consider to be their favorite gyukatsu restaurant.

Just be prepared for a significant wait; you might need to queue for over an hour.

Canal City

Canal City is another massive shopping complex, and it's considered a must-visit in Fukuoka thanks to its captivating fountain shows that occur at set times.

On the hour, a musical fountain show comes to life, and in the evenings, a truly special panoramic fountain show takes place.

Visiting in the evening is definitely more beautiful than during the day!

After enjoying the fountain show, I recommend browsing the shops within La Festa, located on the same floor.

There are several stores, and the Ghibli merchandise shop, in particular, has an abundance of adorable items.

Canal City also hosts a Ramen Stadium, where you'll find ramen shops from various regions of Japan.

Even if none of those suit your preference, don't worry! The beloved Ichiran Ramen, a favorite among many, is conveniently located nearby.

Ohori Park Japanese Garden

This is a beautiful Japanese-style garden situated on the south side of Ohori Park.

You might wonder, 'A garden? Really?' But here, you can experience Japan's unique serene atmosphere and refreshing beauty. It's truly stunning.

To catch the subway, you'll need to head back north, so take your time to admire Ohori Park along the way. Grabbing a coffee at Starbucks there is also a great idea.

Momochi Seaside Park

If you love ocean views, Momochi Seaside Park is another excellent recommendation.

It's an artificial beach popular with both tourists and locals who come to stroll or enjoy the sea breeze.

Although it's a bit removed from the city center, Fukuoka Tower is right next door, making it easy to visit both together.

Visiting around sunset offers a truly magnificent view of the evening sky.

Standing at 768 feet (234 meters), this is the tallest tower in Japan.

If you watch the sunset at Momochi Seaside Park and then head to Fukuoka Tower for the night view, the timing will be perfect.
