Fukuoka's Sabataro: Mackerel Kamameshi Breakfast Review 2026

My Last-Minute Reservation Experience at Sabataro, Fukuoka.

Fukuoka is renowned for its mackerel, and Sabataro is arguably one of the most famous spots for it. A reservation is absolutely essential to dine here, and they specialize in just one dish: mackerel kamameshi (pot rice).

It truly embodies the spirit of Japan's artisan culture – you can feel the mastery in every detail.

We didn't book ahead; we actually snagged a last-minute cancellation for a morning slot on the same day. Since our accommodation was nearby, we quickly made the reservation and headed straight for breakfast! If you're aiming for lunch, same-day bookings are almost impossible, so it's best to book several days in advance. Otherwise, your best bet is to try for a cancelled slot during the first seating of the morning.

Our reservation was for 8:30 AM, so we arrived about 10 minutes early. The entrance, with its cute blue accents reminiscent of a mackerel, was already charming.

It's clear to anyone that this place specializes in mackerel!

Entry began promptly at 8:30 AM. Since there's only one menu item, there's no need to deliberate. Inside, the staff were busily preparing for the morning service.

Once seated at our table inside, we were treated to a view of the Japanese garden through a large glass window. This ambiance definitely adds to the experience. Who would have thought a kamameshi restaurant in the heart of the city could offer such a romantic view?

Finally, the mackerel kamameshi arrived.

A delightful two-tiered bento box, almost like a miniature play set.

The staff member opened the kamameshi lid and let it steam perfectly. At first, the sheer amount of rice and side dishes seemed overwhelming – I wondered if I could possibly finish it all. But somehow, I did! Haha.

Inside, you'll find fresh sashimi and a variety of neatly arranged Japanese home-style side dishes.

After enjoying a good portion of the kamameshi, you can choose to finish your meal with either onigiri (rice balls) or ochazuke (rice with tea poured over it), depending on your preference. If you have any rice left, you can even pack it up as onigiri to go.

Sabataro operates for breakfast and lunch only, not dinner. Lunch is slightly pricier than breakfast, with minor differences in the side dish composition. Considering the overall similarity in the meal and the significantly easier reservation process for breakfast, I personally recommend experiencing it as an early morning meal.

Good quality rice cooked in excellent tools undoubtedly produces delicious kamameshi. The restaurant seemed to take great pride in its craft. They even sell individual rice pots and the very rice they use. Japanese rice is, of course, famously delicious. While buying a pot might be a bit much due to luggage space, picking up some of their rice would make a fantastic souvenir.

Since our last visit, the prices have increased over the past year. As of late 2026, breakfast is approximately ~$21 and lunch is approximately ~$24. While it's not the cheapest breakfast option, it's definitely worth trying if you appreciate a refined Japanese set meal. It's also a great option if you're traveling to Fukuoka with your parents, as older generations tend to love this style of dining.

As someone who usually prefers Asian cuisine over Western, I thoroughly enjoyed this meal! Calling all rice lovers – this one's for you!
