Whenever I find myself with an early start in Fukuoka, there's one onigiri spot that's become my go-to. Opening bright and early at 7:00 AM, Onigiri Gori-chan is the perfect solution for a quick and satisfying breakfast in Tenjin. It's the kind of authentic local gem you'll want to revisit!

Operating Hours: 07:00 AM ~ 06:00 PM
Access: 6-minute walk from Tenjin-Minami Station / 5-minute walk from Watanabedori Station

I arrived around 8:00 AM, and even at that early hour, there was already a line forming. Some people chose to grab their onigiri to go without waiting, which is a great option if your accommodation is nearby.
*Please note: There's an additional 50 yen packaging fee per onigiri for takeout orders.

With about seven people ahead of me, I waited for approximately 20 minutes. The interior primarily features bar-style seating, and while the food comes out quickly, the limited number of seats is likely why there's often a queue.

Each table is thoughtfully equipped with water, cups, small plates, and various seasonings, so you can easily grab whatever you need right from your seat.

Good news for international visitors: the menu includes English translations! If you're feeling overwhelmed by the choices, the set menus are a great option, typically including 2-3 onigiri, pickles, and miso soup.

Beyond the sets, there's an extensive à la carte menu, complete with a 'Top 10 Most Popular' list to guide your decision. You can also customize your onigiri with additional toppings (one per onigiri) or even double the filling for a small extra charge.

One of the highlights is the open kitchen right in front of you. You can watch the staff meticulously prepare each onigiri as soon as your order comes in, which adds a fun, interactive element to your dining experience.

Since we usually don't eat a big breakfast, we opted for just two à la carte onigiri: the popular No. 2, featuring marinated egg yolk and minced meat stir-fry, and No. 3, with minced tuna and green onion, also topped with marinated egg yolk. Trust me, these onigiri are seriously big — easily twice the size of those you'd find at a convenience store!

Despite their generous size, these onigiri aren't just packed with rice. Each one is generously filled to the core with delicious ingredients, making even a single piece incredibly satisfying.

Now for my ultimate recommendation: Ochazuke! The restaurant itself suggests leaving about a third of your onigiri to enjoy as ochazuke. We followed this tip, and it was the perfect way to finish our meal.

The ochazuke broth is a complimentary, self-service offering located near the entrance. Don't miss it!

This flavorful broth is made from Hokkaido kelp and domestic bonito. Even if you're usually wary of seafood broths, you'll be pleasantly surprised – it's incredibly savory and not at all fishy.

After pouring your broth, you can customize your ochazuke with fresh toppings like green onions and sesame seeds, also available next to the broth station. Spoons are provided there too, so grab one on your way!

Eating half as a regular onigiri and then finishing the other half steeped in warm broth made for an incredibly comforting and filling breakfast. It's a completely different experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend trying the ochazuke – it truly elevates the meal!

If you're curious about freshly made onigiri beyond the convenience store variety, or if you're searching for an early morning breakfast spot in Fukuoka, definitely give Onigiri Gori-chan a try. And whatever you do, don't leave without experiencing their fantastic ochazuke!
