I happened to visit Fukuoka during their local festival season, and my trip perfectly overlapped with the Fukuoka Oktoberfest. Originating in Munich, Germany, this massive beer festival has truly made its mark globally, and Fukuoka puts on its own fantastic spin.

The Fukuoka Oktoberfest typically takes place in October. During my visit, the festival hours were from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on weekdays, and 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekends.

The crowd is absolutely massive! If you arrive late, finding a seat can be a challenge. Even with countless tables spread across the venue, it gets packed quickly, though you can usually snag a spot if you keep your eyes peeled.

There is no admission fee to enter, but there is a glassware deposit system. Depending on the glass, it usually costs around 1,000 JPY (~$6), which is fully refundable when you return the glass. (Honestly, charging an entrance fee would be criminal considering how pricey the drinks actually are...)

First off, the lines are incredibly long. But don't just jump into any queue! There is a specific system here: you must queue up at the payment line first to buy a voucher, and then take that voucher to the pickup line to get your beer or food.

If you are traveling with friends, splitting up to tackle both lines is the absolute best strategy. Each booth offers a massive variety of options.

After snapping enough photos, it was finally time for me to grab a drink! As always, I started my night with a classic German Weizen.

This 500 ml (approx. 17 oz) glass of Weizen cost me 1,500 JPY (which is about ~$10 per glass).

For just my glass, my friend's glass, and the deposit for our two glasses, I ended up paying around ~$32 (5,000 JPY equivalent) upfront... Talk about a hefty start!

For my second round, I opted for a smaller 330 ml (approx. 11 oz) pour, which set me back 1,100 JPY (~$7).

Given the steep prices and the massive queues, we decided to skip the food altogether, haha.

It's a great Fukuoka festival where locals and tourists mingle and have an amazing time. While the overall vibe is fantastic, the wait times are long, and the prices are definitely on the higher side.

Interestingly, many people waiting in line were already holding a beer in one hand, drinking while they queued up for their next round! It's a smart strategy to survive the wait.

That said, the beer itself was exceptionally delicious. If you want to taste authentic, high-quality German beers in Japan, it’s absolutely worth a visit. Keep in mind, I visited on a weekend evening, which is likely why it was so crowded.

Note that last call for orders is at 9:40 PM sharp, so don't wait until the last minute!
