I was deep in focus at a coworking space when, all of a sudden, lunchtime rolled around. I was feeling particularly productive today, so I almost just grabbed a bento box from the convenience store near my accommodation to keep working. But then I remembered there was a highly-rated, budget-friendly eatery nearby, and decided to check it out.

Usually, when I head out for a quick bite like this, I don't plan on writing about it. But if a place genuinely impresses me, then it earns its spot on the blog. So, yes, this place was definitely worth sharing!

This is the spot. It seemed to cater mostly to local office workers and solo diners. Their lunch sets are available from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

I arrived a little after noon, and there was a small queue. It’s definitely a neighborhood joint, so no need for reservations, but it’s popular!

The lunch sets at this Fukuoka gem come in two options: one main dish for 700 yen, or two main dishes for 900 yen. I didn't hesitate and went for the 900 yen option. Interestingly, while I was there, I didn't see a single other person order the two-main dish set. I wonder why?

Everyone else seemed to be a local; I didn't spot any other tourists or Koreans.

The interior had that charming, understated feel of a local neighborhood diner. I tried to be discreet with my photos, as is customary in Japan.

While I also had a choice, I didn't quite catch what the server said at first, so I think they just gave me the croquette. I probably would have chosen karaage if I had understood, but the croquette was surprisingly delicious, so it ended up being a great choice anyway!

This is what the full set looks like. For 900 yen, this is an incredibly generous and value-packed meal in Fukuoka! I remember a previous trip to Tokyo where a two-main dish set meal cost me well over ~$35; though that was a more famous spot with a pricier menu.

The rice portion was also quite substantial. I didn't leave anything behind, but I was definitely feeling full before I finished.

Whether it's a general Japanese custom or specific to these types of set meals, I noticed that no one left any food on their plates – just empty dishes. I found myself doing the same without even thinking about it.

Both in terms of value and taste, this place was a winner. If the menu changes daily, I'd definitely visit again. Even if not, I'm curious to try the karaage next time! I'm staying in a nearby accommodation for two nights, but tomorrow is a tour day, so I probably won't have time to return. Still, I'll keep it in mind for a future visit.

Fukuoka has so many famous dishes and renowned restaurants, but constantly searching for them and waiting in lines can honestly get a bit exhausting.

That's why, every now and then, it's really nice to just pop into a low-key, unpretentious neighborhood spot like this. It's less hassle, and the experience feels more authentic.

Sure, these places might not have English menus, or even picture menus (sometimes it's just handwritten kanji that translation apps struggle with), and the owners might not speak English. But isn't that part of the charm of international travel? Embracing those little adventures!
