For our recent family trip to Fukuoka,
we were brainstorming day trips around the city, and
Itoshima ultimately won us over!
While Yufuin is usually a popular choice,
we've noticed more and more people heading to Itoshima recently.
Best of all, it's a fantastic fit for a Fukuoka family itinerary, especially since Itoshima is
a half-day tour that perfectly complements a shorter 2-night, 3-day trip to Fukuoka.
Stick around until the end of the post, and I'll even share a
Fukuoka day trip discount coupon, offering up to ~$5 off!
Why Itoshima is the Perfect Fukuoka Day Trip

On my previous trip to Fukuoka,
I actually took a bus tour to Yufuin for a day.
While Yufuin was lovely,
it was also quite crowded, which made it a bit tiring.

We only had about 3 hours to explore Yufuin, and even though it's famous for its onsens,
it felt a bit rushed to truly enjoy one.
Plus, with an early morning start from our hotel
and a late return to Fukuoka city in the evening,
we ended up more exhausted than we anticipated.

For this Fukuoka trip,
especially since I was traveling with my parents, I wanted to avoid any overly packed tours,
and I definitely didn't want to sacrifice our time exploring Fukuoka city itself.
That's when I discovered the perfect solution:
the Itoshima half-day tour!

If Yufuin demands a full day for a bus tour,
effectively taking up your entire day,
Itoshima lets you soak in endless ocean views, explore charming spots like a salt workshop,
and still be back at Hakata Station by 1 PM.
This meant we could easily combine both city exploration
and a delightful day trip, even on a shorter Fukuoka itinerary!

Another major perk of the Itoshima tour? You can even enjoy it on the morning of your departure day!
Since the tour gets you back to Hakata Station around 1 PM,
you can even take your luggage with you on the tour and head straight to the airport afterward.

Typically, full-day tours make it tricky to squeeze them
into your arrival or departure days,
but the Itoshima half-day tour completely changes that,
letting you maximize your time efficiently.
Our Itoshima Tour Itinerary

Our suburban adventure kicked off at 8:20 AM
and wrapped up around 1:30 PM.
The absolute best part about the Itoshima tour was that, even after a wonderful day trip,
it didn't feel like our entire day had vanished!

Our first stop on the suburban tour was Totoro's Forest,
and just as the name suggests, the forest atmosphere was absolutely magical.
The way the light streamed through the trees,
a true highlight of the morning tour, was simply stunning!

And right next to Totoro's Forest,
the ocean views were equally breathtaking.
With the expansive, refreshing ocean stretching out before us,
it was immediately clear why Itoshima is often called the 'Hawaii of Kyushu'!

Next up was one of the main reasons many people visit Itoshima:
to try the delicious salt workshop pudding!

One of the best things about a Fukuoka suburban tour is
that you can pre-order the salt workshop pudding,
so you can pick it up right upon arrival at the Salt Workshop.
(Waiting time typically 10+ minutes in the afternoon)

On top of the pudding with sweet caramel sauce,
a sprinkle of salt is added.
The sweet and salty combination is absolutely delightful and incredibly delicious!

Sakurai Futamigaura
can be considered the absolute highlight of the Itoshima tour.
The view of the ocean and the 'Wedded Rocks',
along with the white torii gate, is truly breathtaking.

What's more, Itoshima's sea is incredibly clear,
making it beautiful just to gaze upon!
If you visit in summer, you'll see many travelers enjoying water activities,
and it made me want to go swimming there in the summer next time.

The final stop was Palm Tree Swing,
where a collection of fantastic photo spots awaited.

From swings to Doraemon's 'Anywhere Door' and more,
there are so many unique photo spots clustered together,
making it perfect for family photos.
The swings, in particular, come in such a wide variety,
that kids absolutely adore playing on them.

If you're looking for even more famous Fukuoka suburban destinations,
a Yufuin-Beppu tour would certainly fit the bill.
However, if you're staying in Fukuoka for about 2 nights and 3 days
and want to experience both city and suburban tours,
this Itoshima half-day tour turned out to be surprisingly amazing!

I booked this time through Klook,

It had great reviews, and over 2,000 people had already experienced it!

cheaper!
