When you're planning a trip to Fukuoka,
you might find yourself pondering one thing more than you'd expect.
If you search for "places to visit in Fukuoka,"
you'll find a massive list, from Canal City, Ohori Park, and Momochi Beach,
all the way to Dazaifu, Yufuin, and Beppu.
Especially if your itinerary is short, like a 2-night, 3-day trip to Fukuoka,
it's practically impossible to fit in all the famous spots.
I've personally visited many places, from popular tourist attractions to day trips outside the city.
To cut to the chase, just because a place is famous doesn't mean you need to visit them all.
While there are places I'd highly recommend for a first-time visit,
there were also spots I felt didn't need to be included again on a subsequent trip.
So, I'm going to compare 7 places I've personally visited in Fukuoka,
categorizing them for a first trip versus a return visit.

Canal City Hakata
A place you'll likely stumble upon without even trying
Canal City is a place I find myself visiting
almost every time I go to Fukuoka.
You can find everything here, from shopping and dining to cafes,
and if you're planning your Hakata and Nakasu itineraries together,
it fits in naturally with your route.
Instead of dedicating separate time to it,
we often found ourselves exploring it while visiting nearby areas.
However, it's not somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit,
so even for a first trip, it leans more towards ○ than ◎.
If you're on a 2-night, 3-day trip,
I recommend combining it with other plans.
Ohori Park
Recommended if you want a leisurely stroll on a nice day
Ohori Park is a place I've grown quite fond of.
It was perfect for taking a break from sightseeing, strolling along the large lake.
However, it's heavily influenced by the weather.
It's lovely on clear, cool days,
but if it's midsummer or raining,
it drops down the priority list.
I'd particularly recommend it to those who enjoy leisurely walks during their travels.
Momochi Seaside Park
Unless you're going for the sunset, it's not a must-see.
It's famous, so I went to check it out myself,
but unless your goal is to catch the sunset or take photos,
it wasn't a place I'd say you absolutely *have* to include.
The atmosphere of walking by the sea is pleasant, but
if you're on a 2-night, 3-day trip, it wasn't a priority spot to visit
at the expense of other places.
Momochi Seaside Park seems to be more about
the timing and purpose of your visit than the place itself.
Sumiyoshi Shrine
If you have some spare time in Hakata,
We didn't originally plan to visit this spot;
we just happened to have some extra time while exploring around Hakata and decided to drop by.
Despite being right in the city center, its calm atmosphere was
actually better than we expected.
However, it wasn't significant enough to change our whole itinerary just to see this one place.
If you're staying near Hakata Station
or have plans nearby, feel free to casually stop by.
Dazaifu
Highly recommended if it's your first 2-night, 3-day Fukuoka trip.
If it's your first time exploring the outskirts,
I'd recommend Dazaifu first and foremost.
Beyond Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine itself,
you can also explore the surrounding shopping street,
and I actually found the time spent leisurely browsing
the shopping street to be quite enjoyable.
It's perfect for a half-day excursion,
so it can be relatively easily fit into a 2-night, 3-day Fukuoka itinerary
without feeling rushed.
However, if you're planning to visit Yufuin or Beppu,
there's no need to add Dazaifu to your schedule as well.
Yufuin
A place where staying one night in a ryokan was better than a day trip.
While exploring Yuno-tsubo Street and
the shops around it is fun,
if you only consider the tourist attractions themselves,
I wasn't as impressed as I was with Dazaifu.
However, my opinion of Yufuin completely changed
after spending a night at a ryokan there.
After enjoying a private family bath and a Kaiseki meal,
and relaxing in a yukata,
I found that Yufuin is much better experienced
when you combine accommodation and hot springs, rather than just seeing the tourist sights and leaving.
If you've already traveled to Fukuoka a few times,
I recommend staying overnight in Yufuin instead of the city,
taking your time to relax.
Beppu
Recommended for repeat visits or longer itineraries, rather than a first trip.
Beppu is a hot spring destination like Yufuin,
but when I visited, I found the atmosphere to be quite different.
Kamado Jigoku was fun,
but being able to see steam rising from various spots throughout the streets
gave it a distinct hot spring town atmosphere, different from Yufuin.
If you're looking for sights beyond just hot springs,
Beppu might be a better fit for you.
However, since you have to travel from Fukuoka,
I'd likely lower its priority for a first 2-night, 3-day trip.
If you've already explored Fukuoka
or have 3 nights and 4 days or more, it's definitely worth considering.
If I had to choose from the seven places we compared this time,
for a first 2-night, 3-day Fukuoka trip,
I'd prioritize Canal City, Ohori Park, and Dazaifu.
If ryokan and hot springs are your main goal, then Yufuin.
If you've already explored Fukuoka city,
it's a great idea to expand your horizons to include Yufuin or Beppu.
Momochi Beach is perfect for catching a sunset on a nice day,
and Sumiyoshi Shrine can easily be added if you have
some extra time in Hakata.
After personally visiting various must-see spots in Fukuoka,
I realized that what truly matters isn't how many places you've visited,
but whether they align well with your travel goals and itinerary.
Especially if your trip is short, like a 2-night, 3-day Fukuoka itinerary,
I found it much more comfortable to remove one place that didn't fit the flow,
rather than trying to squeeze in another famous spot.
If you're currently planning your Fukuoka travel itinerary,
instead of asking 'Is it famous?'
ask 'Is it truly essential for *this* trip?'
Think about that first.
Just by setting that one criterion,
it becomes much easier to decide what to include and what to leave out.
