Ippudo Ramen is renowned as one of Fukuoka's "Big Three" ramen establishments.
Known for its rich and deeply flavorful Tonkotsu ramen, it's become incredibly popular with international visitors.
I recently stopped by their branch in the dining area of Hakata Station, and I'm excited to share my experience, including menu options, prices, and, of course, the taste!
1. Ippudo Ramen Overview

Operating Hours | Sunday - Thursday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM Friday - Saturday 11:00 AM - 10:30 PM |
Ippudo Ramen boasts about five locations in the Fukuoka area, including its original flagship store.
• Daimyo Main Store (near Tenjin Station)
• Hakata Station Branch (10th floor dining area)
• Sanno Branch (between Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport)
• Fukuoka Airport Branch (Domestic Terminal 3F)
• Meinohama Branch (near Meinohama Station)
For travelers, the Daimyo Main Store and Hakata Station branch are usually the most convenient to fit into your itinerary.

I visited the Hakata Station branch and was seated immediately around 12:15 PM. However, by the time I finished my meal closer to 12:45 PM, a line had formed.
Still, ramen is served quickly, ensuring a good turnover, so even if there's a wait, you likely won't be standing for too long.

While there were a few tables for groups, most of the seating was designed for solo diners, making it a perfect spot if you're eating alone.
2. The Menu

Ordering is conveniently done via a tablet at your seat. Even better, English language support is available, making the process incredibly easy for international visitors.

Ippudo Ramen's menu primarily features Tonkotsu ramen, with variations offering slightly different flavor profiles.
• Shiromaru: The classic, smooth, and refined original Tonkotsu flavor.
• Akamaru: A richer, deeper flavor enhanced with a special aromatic oil.
• Karakamen: A spicy and invigorating option for those who like a kick.
Since it was my first time at Ippudo, I decided to go with the foundational Shiromaru to experience their classic taste.

You can add various toppings like egg, green onions, seaweed, and wood ear mushrooms. What truly caught my eye was mentaiko (spicy cod roe), a famous Fukuoka specialty! It felt unique to have it as a ramen topping, and as a big fan of mentaiko, I added it to my order without hesitation.

Beyond Tonkotsu ramen, they also offered Tsukemen, where you dip the noodles into a separate, concentrated broth.
However, this is a limited-time menu item, so keep that in mind if you plan to visit.

Spicy bean sprouts, pickled mustard greens, red pickled ginger, and fresh garlic are all available as complimentary additions. The spicy bean sprouts are even served as a standard side dish when you're seated.
They're wonderfully crunchy and spicy, making them a perfect palate cleanser, almost like a Japanese kimchi, so I piled them onto my ramen!
3. My Ippudo Ramen Review

The rich appearance of the Tonkotsu ramen already had me excited.

With my first spoonful of Ippudo's broth, the distinctive savory richness of Tonkotsu ramen truly shone through, deep and profound.

The noodles had a texture similar to Ichiran Ramen – perfectly firm and chewy, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
However, as someone who usually prefers bolder flavors, I started to find it a little rich after a few bites.

That's when I added the mentaiko. Its salty kick perfectly balanced the richness, and I was surprised by how well it complemented the ramen.

Still wanting a bit more punch, I crushed two cloves of fresh garlic into my bowl. The aromatic garlic instantly elevated the flavor, making it much more to my personal taste.

While I personally lean towards more intense flavors, making Ichiran Ramen slightly more my style, if you're looking to experience the authentic, rich, and deep essence of traditional Tonkotsu ramen, Ippudo is an absolute must-try.

As one of Fukuoka's most celebrated ramen spots, I highly recommend adding Ippudo Ramen to your culinary itinerary.
