Things to do at Tenmangu Shrine & Kimono

Just about 40 minutes from Fukuoka,

is the charming suburban town of Dazaifu.

It's a town with a completely different vibe from the city center,

and home to the main Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to the god of academics.

It's definitely worth a visit.

I'll share how to get there, what to do, details about the shrine, and more! Enjoy the read '-'

1. How to Get There

There are several ways to get to Dazaifu from Fukuoka,

including subway and express buses.

However, taking the bus from Hakata Station Bus Terminal

is the fastest and most convenient option.

Honestly, Dazaifu doesn't have an abundance of

attractions or activities to warrant a full-day trip,

so 2-3 hours is usually enough time to explore.

Rather than visiting individually,

I recommend taking a bus tour that combines Dazaifu with Yufuin, Mount Yufu, and Beppu

for a comprehensive and efficient trip.

2. Exploring Dazaifu

If you're heading to Dazaifu, there are two main attractions

you absolutely have to check out:

1) Tenmangu Shrine

2) Dazaifu Starbucks

Think of it as a quiet, serene small town,

perfect for soaking in that rustic Japanese countryside charm.

To reach Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine,

you'll walk along this charming path.

Both sides of the street are lined with shops selling cute souvenirs

and delicious snacks, making the stroll up quite enjoyable.

Dazaifu's signature local treat is

Umegae Mochi,

said to ward off bad luck and bring good fortune.

However, the snack I personally recommend is

the Mentaiko Baguette from Yamaya Base Bakery.

It's packed with rich, savory mentaiko flavor – absolutely delicious!

There's also a famous Starbucks on this street,

designed by a world-renowned architect.

Thanks to its unique design, crafted with traditional Japanese wooden structures,

it's even called one of Dazaifu's must-visit spots.

If you're planning to grab coffee at Starbucks,

I recommend visiting Tenmangu Shrine first,

then stopping by on your way back down.

You'll definitely be thirsty after exploring the shrine, so it's the perfect time for coffee!

3. Tenmangu Shrine

At the entrance of Tenmangu Shrine, there's a cow statue.

They say if you stroke its head,

you can gain academic success and wisdom,

so many people line up to give it a rub.

Beyond the cow statue, on the path leading into the shrine,

you'll encounter three bridges:

✔ The First Bridge (Past) - Don't look back

✔ The Second Bridge (Present) - Don't stop

✔ The Third Bridge (Future) - Don't stumble

These are the rules, haha!

It's said to symbolize not dwelling on the past, living diligently in the present,

and moving forward towards the future ~

After crossing all the bridges, you'll see the shrine entrance.

In front of it, hoping to help visitors forget the heat,

wind chimes (Furin) are installed.

As you listen to their gentle tinkling sounds,

you'll mysteriously feel a sense of coolness🎐

Once you enter Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine,

you'll see people performing traditional worship (sambe).

✅ How to Perform Sambe

1) Place a coin in the offering box (usually 5 yen)

2) Bow twice, clap your hands twice

3) Bring your hands together and make a wish

Performing sambe is one way to truly experience Dazaifu,

so I hope you'll give it a try when you visit.

Next to the main hall, you'll find a small garden, a baby cow statue,

and places to purchase talismans and more.

As a shrine dedicated to the god of learning,

they have a particularly wide selection of academic talismans, making them perfect gifts for friends or family with important exams coming up.

Dazaifu also beautifully preserves a traditional Japanese atmosphere,

making it a wonderful place to explore while wearing a kimono!

You'll spot many people in kimonos strolling through the streets,

and I even rented a kimono myself for my visit.

It made for even better photos and was a truly special experience.

If you're on a bus tour, a kimono experience might not be possible due to time constraints.

However, if you're planning a solo trip to Dazaifu,

I highly recommend trying it out at least once.

After strolling around, we made a stop at Starbucks on our way back down.

The Starbucks in Dazaifu is quite famous among visitors, making it a must-see spot,

so be prepared for a bit of a wait.

If you're not a fan of queues, I'd recommend just snapping some photos of the iconic exterior

and heading to one of the other charming independent cafes nearby.

There are actually some wonderfully quiet and atmospheric cafes hidden around,

so it might be fun to discover them as you wander through Dazaifu.

Dazaifu, just a short trip from Fukuoka city center, is a charming small town.

While it doesn't boast an endless list of attractions, it's perfect for a relaxed 2-3 hour visit, offering a delightful escape.

If you adore that unique Japanese ambiance, I highly recommend a solo trip where you can explore at your own pace.

But if time is tight, a quick stop as part of a bus tour is a fantastic way to see the main highlights!
