1. Fukuoka Day Trip Bus Tour Itinerary & Booking
My family and I decided to dedicate one of our Fukuoka vacation days to exploring the beautiful surrounding areas.
We debated between renting a car for a more private experience or booking a bus tour. Ultimately, we opted for the bus tour due to a few key reasons:
Avoiding potential rental car accidents + unfamiliar roads + a last-minute booking scramble!

I was worried we wouldn't find anything, as most tours don't accept bookings the day before. But to our surprise, we found a tour that did! Even better, it had the same itinerary as other tours but at a more affordable price.
After booking, we received our meeting time and details via KakaoTalk (a popular messaging app).

7:40 AM: Meet at Lawson convenience store, Hakata Station

2. My Honest Bus Tour Review
Since our accommodation was near Tenjin Station, we took a bus to Hakata Station's Lawson convenience store, arriving a little after 7 AM.
Hakata Station is a hub for many tour companies. Just look for the sign of the tour you booked.
Bus seats are usually first-come, first-served, so if you want to sit with your travel companions, I recommend arriving early!
First stop: Dazaifu Tenmangu -!
When you cross the bridges at Dazaifu Tenmangu, it's customary not to look back! It's believed to help purify your mind and body before entering the sacred grounds.
After Dazaifu Tenmangu, we headed to Yufuin.
On the way to Yufuin, we stopped at a Seven-Eleven rest stop where you'll have time to grab some of the famous local yogurt.
I highly recommend trying it at least once!
In Yufuin, we tried another famous yogurt (they taste pretty similar, so one is probably enough!).
After enjoying the lake views, we had some soba noodles nearby (wouldn't recommend) and then tried the famous grilled shiitake mushrooms. (Highly recommend!)
I remember visiting about three years ago, around 2023, and the price was only ~$3 (500 JPY), but it's gone up quite a bit since then.
Prices: ~$4 (700 JPY), ~$6 (900 JPY), ~$7 (1200 JPY)
Other sizes were sold out, so we ended up getting the ~$7 (1200 JPY) one.
No regrets though... it was absolutely delicious! You absolutely MUST try the grilled shiitake mushrooms!
It was a hot day, so we rested at a cafe for a bit, browsed some souvenirs, and then headed to Yufudake.

Originally, you could get off at Yufudake to take photos, but recently, Japanese authorities have restricted stopping there. (This applies to all tours.)
Our guide played some Studio Ghibli music, so we enjoyed the scenery through the window with a magical soundtrack.
Next, we headed to Kamado Jigoku (Hell Valley) in Beppu, famous for its hot springs.
At Kamado Jigoku, everyone gets one hard-boiled egg and a bottle of ramune soda, cooked right in the hot springs.
You can enjoy these treats while experiencing the unique hot spring demonstrations.
Just a friendly heads-up: Since it's a bus ride back to Hakata Station after Beppu, don't drink too much soda! ⭐️
3. Final Thoughts: Is a Day Bus Tour Worth It?
Trying to visit Fukuoka, Dazaifu, Yufuin, Yufudake, and Beppu all in one day independently would be incredibly challenging.
The great thing about a bus tour is that it allows you to easily explore Fukuoka's surroundings in a single day.
(You can leave your luggage at your hotel and enjoy the day without any heavy bags ~!!)
Plus, traveling by bus means you get plenty of rest time in between stops, which was perfect for managing my parents' energy levels.
