It was 1:30 AM...
My flight arrived super late on the first day, so I was desperately searching for a truly 'bang-for-your-buck' place in Taipei just for sleep. (It seems prices have gone up a bit since I visited, especially during peak season, but it was incredibly affordable then.)
However, I overlooked one crucial detail:
My arrival time was just *too* late!
Having traveled frequently to places like Vietnam, I'd gotten used to hotels there. In Vietnam, even budget accommodations often have staff sleeping in the lobby, effectively providing 24-hour service. I mistakenly assumed it would be similar in Taipei.
So, I arrived without a second thought, only to find...
Surprise! There was a note on the door with my name, asking me to call. Turns out, the hotel had sent me messages via Agoda asking about my arrival time, but I hadn't seen them while I was on the flight.
The real kicker? I only brought a data-only SIM card, assuming I wouldn't need local call service in Taipei.
Honestly, if I had gone straight to the hotel after being dropped off by my airport transfer, I could have asked the driver to call for me before they left.
But no, I spotted a 7-Eleven on the first floor. It was my first night, after all, and even though it was late, I couldn't resist grabbing a beer and some snacks. So, I popped in there first, and when I came out, *that's* when I saw the note. Classic travel blunder, right?
I calmly decided to use an internet calling app. I felt a bit awkward calling so late, but there was no other option, and the note explicitly asked me to contact them.
Click. Someone picked up. To my surprise, the hotel staff member was incredibly apologetic, explaining they had messaged me repeatedly (while I was still in the air) and had no other way to reach me, hence the note. (I was the one who should have been sorry!)

While the map might point to 'B' as Dongmen Market, the area around Dongmen Hotel (point 'A') felt much livelier and more bustling, with more people and active shops.
I also picked up and recharged an EasyCard at that same convenience store from the night before (I swear I had one, but it vanished!). And since they sold bubble tea, I had to try it.
Wow, it's truly the land of bubble tea! Even the convenience store version was surprisingly good. (Of course, specialty shops are even better, but still!)
The pearls weren't hard at all; they were soft and chewy, even from a convenience store!
Of course, that was just out of curiosity. From then on, I made sure to get my bubble tea fix from dedicated shops, haha.
When I checked out, I met the person who seemed to be the owner (I'm not sure if it was the same person I spoke to on the phone, but they were very friendly!). This Taipei hotel truly earns a recommendation for its kind service. Although English wasn't their strong suit, their actions conveyed genuine warmth, and they wished me "Have a nice journey" in English as I left.
