My Review: How I Skipped the Long Queue at Din Tai Fung with a Meal Voucher

When you think of Taiwan, the first restaurant that probably comes to mind is the legendary dim sum spot, Din Tai Fung, right?
The New York Times famously recognized it as one of the world's most noteworthy restaurants, propelling it to global fame. Naturally, countless travelers are eager to experience Din Tai Fung in its homeland.
(And yes, the local crowd is even bigger!)
Curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to check it out myself.
I'm excited to share my experience at the Fuxing branch, known for having the shortest wait times, where I used a meal voucher to enjoy my feast!

Because it's located inside a department store, it's generally known to have shorter wait times compared to other branches.

Considering it's a world-famous restaurant and dim sum can be a bit pricier, I found it to be surprisingly reasonable!

Many people talk about meal vouchers reducing wait times, but you might be wondering exactly how much time it saves and how it works, right?
Based on my visit, even though I got there almost right at opening,
the digital display board was already showing a 40-minute wait.
However, because I used a meal voucher, I received a separate queue number in the 9000s, which wasn't even on the main display.
In reality, I only waited for about 20 minutes before I could enter!
So, if you're keen to cut down on waiting, using a meal voucher is definitely worth considering, as you'll get a completely separate queue number like this.
Interestingly, while waiting at the Din Tai Fung Fuxing branch, you can actually peek into the bustling kitchen.
Seeing the staff meticulously craft xiaolongbao, all wearing clean masks and hats, definitely made me feel confident about the food I was about to enjoy.
The restaurant interior was much larger than I expected,
and apart from the group tables, it was already completely full.
Tables for 2 to 8 people were available,
and I was surprised by how many local customers there were.
We were guided to a table for two.
It seemed like mostly local elders came here
for a light meal, creating a very relaxed atmosphere.
Since we had already booked our meal tickets in advance,
we didn't need to order anything extra from the menu,
and the set menu items were served one by one.
The stir-fried vegetables that came out first tasted similar to morning glory,
with a similar texture, and were delightfully simple.
They were perfect to enjoy alongside everything else.
The xiao long bao arrived surprisingly quickly,
and three plates piled up while we were still taking photos!
They were pork, chicken, and loofah gourd, respectively.
First off, the meat xiao long bao were bursting with savory broth,
and packed with umami-rich meat.
Eating them with ginger dipped in vinegar soy sauce
really helped cut through the richness of the meat, making them incredibly delicious!
The loofah gourd flavor was truly unique,
and I'd never experienced xiao long bao with this kind of taste and texture before,
so it was a truly fresh experience.
Next up were the truffle and vegetable xiao long bao.
The truffle xiao long bao had a fragrant truffle aroma and flavor in the broth,
and as someone who already loves truffle,
this dish was absolutely perfect for my palate.
Personally, I found the vegetable ones a little bland.
Unlike the meat-filled options, the crab roe xiao long bao
distinctively tasted of crab when you bit into them,
a straightforward flavor exactly as the name suggested.
For our main meal, we were served two dishes: pork rib fried rice and
Suanlatang soup.
Suanlatang literally means 'sour and spicy soup',
and while it was definitely tangy, it wasn't particularly spicy.
However, the strong aroma of pepper was quite prominent,
so I imagine it might be a hit or miss for some.
For me, it really stimulated my appetite, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The fried rice was perfectly stir-fried, separate grain by grain, with just the right amount of oil,
giving it a delightful texture, and its mild flavor was simply delicious.
If you enjoy your fried rice topped with stir-fried vegetables,
you'll truly get to experience that rich, clean flavor.
And finally, out came three delightful kinds of dessert dim sum!
They were made with red bean, taro, and chocolate.
Surprisingly, the red bean and taro ones weren't overly sweet at all,
giving off a delightful vibe similar to eating a classic sweet red bean bun.
The chocolate one, however, was indeed filled with rich, sweet chocolate,
and the moment I bit in, a wave of sweetness instantly enveloped my mouth.
I honestly wondered if these dessert fillings would even work in dim sum,
but to my delight, they were incredibly tasty and surprisingly harmonious!
At Din Tai Fung, I indulged in a fantastic array of xiao long bao,
along with other delicious meal options and even delightful desserts.
It's not every day you get to try such unique dishes,
and some even featured truly innovative ingredients,
which made anticipating each bite an absolute thrill!
What's more, the flavors were consistently excellent across the board,
making it a meal that was absolutely worth every penny.
I actually booked a meal voucher in advance for my visit,
and doing so cut my waiting time by about half, which was incredibly convenient!
