When you visit Taipei, there's one culinary destination that's absolutely non-negotiable for foodies: Din Tai Fung Taiwan, world-renowned for its exquisite xiaolongbao.
While other famous spots like Kiki Restaurant have their fans, Din Tai Fung is truly in a league of its own—I've yet to meet a traveler who hasn't heard of it!
The only snag? Its immense popularity means notoriously long wait times. On my recent visit, I intentionally aimed for a late lunch, hoping to dodge the peak crowds, but...
A daunting 120-minute wait was staring me down.
Luckily, I anticipated this! I had already secured my KKday pre-booked voucher.
KKday offers various set menus (A, B, or C, each with different combinations) featuring Din Tai Fung's signature dishes. You can also choose your preferred branch; I opted for the Taipei 101 location, which is perfect for combining with a visit to the observatory.
Once you've booked, you'll receive a voucher like the one above. Just present it at the Din Tai Fung counter, and voilà!
You'll be given a separate waiting number, distinct from the general queue. On my visit, a 120-minute wait was slashed to just 30 minutes!
I took a leisurely stroll around the Taipei 101 area, exploring other nearby eateries, and by the time I returned, it was already my turn to enter.
I was surprised by how spacious the interior was. Yet, even with all that room, the wait is still incredibly long!
Many skilled chefs were diligently crafting xiaolongbao. This open kitchen area is actually a designated photo spot at Din Tai Fung Taiwan – there's even a sticker encouraging you to snap a picture!

After taking some photos and soaking in the atmosphere, the dishes started to arrive.
I've grouped the dishes together in this collage for easy viewing, but rest assured, they arrive one by one, much like a well-paced tasting menu.
First up, the star of the show: the classic xiaolongbao. Following the helpful guide, I punctured the delicate skin, letting the savory broth flood my spoon, then added a touch of vinegar-soy sauce and fresh ginger before devouring it.
The fried rice was, as expected, phenomenal. The accompanying soup had a unique flavor profile that wasn't immediately familiar, but I appreciated having a warm broth. It's something I probably wouldn't have ordered à la carte, so it was a nice addition to the set menu!
As each dish arrived, the staff would check it off on a small paper, ensuring no items were missed and allowing me to keep track of what had been served. It's a testament to the efficient system of this popular Taipei restaurant.
To round off the meal, a delightful red bean dessert was served. The staff seemed to time the courses perfectly with my eating pace; since I was quite hungry and the food was so delicious (as expected from a top Taipei restaurant), the dishes kept coming out without a pause!
The taste was just as incredible as when I last visited in 2020. It sounds funny to say it, but it truly felt like that exact same, unforgettable flavor.
Booking in advance through KKday not only saved me a significant amount of waiting time but also saved me money. Initially, the prices seemed quite similar (KKday was slightly cheaper even then), so I didn't think it was a huge difference worth mentioning. However, when I got the bill for a walk-in meal on a previous trip, they added a 10% service charge.
