Taipei's Premier Dim Sum Experience
A trip to Taipei wouldn't be complete without a visit to Din Tai Fung, and the Taipei 101 branch is often at the top of many travelers' lists. It's renowned for its exquisite dim sum, especially its legendary xiao long bao. Naturally, such popularity means notoriously long queues, but don't let that deter you! While completely eliminating the wait might be a pipe dream, there are smart ways to significantly cut down your time in line – primarily by booking ahead.
You'll find several Din Tai Fung locations, including the original branch, but the Taipei 101 branch is a fantastic choice if you're already planning to visit the observatory. You can enjoy a delicious meal and then head up for breathtaking night views, making for a perfectly efficient itinerary.
The biggest hurdle? The wait time. But as I mentioned, a little planning goes a long way!
Beating the Taipei 101 Din Tai Fung Wait

On my most recent visit, the entrance was bustling with people, as you can see.

As one of the most popular restaurants in Taipei 101, it's not uncommon to see wait times upwards of 110 minutes – nearly two hours! That's a serious chunk of your precious vacation time.

However, if you arrive with a pre-booked voucher, you can drastically reduce your waiting time. The exact difference in wait time can vary depending on how many other voucher-holders are present. I've always ended up going in the late afternoon or evening, but you might find even shorter waits if you visit in the morning.
Savoring the Flavors of Taipei

One strategy some folks consider is quickly visiting the observatory while waiting, but that always felt a bit rushed and anxiety-inducing to me. I prefer to enjoy my meal at a leisurely pace and then head up to the observatory afterward.

Finally, my turn arrived! The table was set, and since I had pre-ordered, the dishes started arriving promptly.

You can actually watch the xiao long bao being made and even take photos! There are designated "photo zones" marked on the floor, which is a thoughtful touch. Otherwise, I might have felt a bit awkward snapping pictures while they were busy working. It was great to capture the craftsmanship without feeling intrusive.
What else did I order? The 18-Day Beer!
I highly recommend this one; it's quite exceptional.

It's not your average beer; it has a unique flavor profile that, to my knowledge, you can only really experience in Taipei (I'm not sure if it's exported elsewhere). I once mistakenly ordered a "Gold Medal" Taiwan Beer from the same brand elsewhere, thinking it would be similar, but it was nowhere near as good as the 18-Day Beer. Trust me on this one!
Din Tai Fung Taiwan Menu Highlights

When you make a reservation, the Taipei 101 Din Tai Fung menu often comes as a set. I dined solo at the Taipei 101 branch, and even though I was by myself, I opted for a 2-person set menu. It was definitely a generous amount of food, perhaps a bit much for one!

The dishes are brought out one by one as they're prepared, and each item is checked off the list. It feels like a very systematic and well-run operation, befitting such a popular restaurant in Taipei 101.

The xiao long bao are best enjoyed piping hot, so dig into those first (careful not to burn your tongue!). You can then leisurely enjoy the other dishes in between.

And for dessert, I had red bean paste dim sum and chocolate dim sum. I honestly didn't expect much, but they were surprisingly delightful!

Since these are set menus, you'll generally need to select a quantity for two people or more. Honestly, with current exchange rates, the prices feel a bit higher than they used to – perhaps a jump of about ~$7 or more. Still, it's worth it for the experience!
Booking your Taipei 101 Din Tai Fung reservation in advance is a game-changer for cutting down wait times and ensuring your food arrives promptly. If you want to order more, you can always add on extra dishes once you're seated.
And remember, I chose the Taipei 101 branch specifically to combine it with a visit to the observatory, but you can go to any Din Tai Fung location that suits your itinerary – the deliciousness is consistent across the board!
