First off, your only essential for hailing a ride is the WeChat app itself. Just make sure your identity verification is properly set up – seriously, for a smooth Qingdao trip, WeChat identity verification is key.
Years ago, when I lived in China, we had to download the dedicated DiDi Dache app. Now, you can use it directly within WeChat – China's digital landscape truly operates on another level. (Though, I suppose that means they're collecting even more of my personal data, right?)
Anyway, DiDi Chuxing (often just called DiDi) is essentially China's version of Uber or Lyft. It was originally called 'DiDi Dache,' meaning 'to hail a taxi,' but they rebranded to 'DiDi Chuxing' as they expanded into a comprehensive mobility platform.
But back to the main point: the convenience of not needing a separate DiDi app is fantastic. If you have a foreign card linked to WeChat Pay – like a Travel Wallet or similar – payment is also a breeze. Make sure to link one up before you go!
Here's what we'll cover in this guide:
Hailing a DiDi is surprisingly intuitive once you're in WeChat. Open the WeChat app, navigate to the 'Me' tab at the bottom right, then select 'Pay and Services.'
Scroll down a bit, and under the 'Travel & Transportation' section, you'll spot the orange 'DiDi Ride-Hailing' icon. Tap it, and you'll be taken straight to the DiDi interface. If it's your first time, just accept all the terms and conditions. Farewell, personal data!
Your pickup location will automatically default to your current position (like the airport). Tap on 'Destination,' and in the search bar at the top, you can enter your hotel, shopping mall, or landmark in English. While knowing the Chinese address is ideal, major global chains usually pop up with English searches. That's how I found my hotel!
If your hotel is large, you might see options like East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, North Gate, or Lobby (大堂). Instead of getting bogged down, just select the green star icon (which usually indicates the most popular or recommended spot) – that's likely where you want to go. And honestly, if there's traffic or an issue, the driver will usually figure it out and drop you off, often communicating via body language (even if you speak a little Chinese, expect some gesturing!).

Look at the options below, decide how much you're willing to spend, and then tap the orange '立即打车' (Call Now / Call Type) button at the bottom to start matching with a driver.
Most Recommended Options - Best Value First
Vehicle quality is pretty consistent across these, so I recommend the cheaper options! These are typically private cars, not traditional taxis.
❤️🔥Surprise Discount (惊喜特价) : Think of it like UberX
- The system offers discounts based on demand (location, time) on a first-come, first-served basis.
- You'll join the queue behind others in the area, so it might take a little longer, usually 1-3 minutes.
❤️Express Discount (特惠快车) : Similar to Uber Select
- This option is almost always available, and it's slightly more expensive than Surprise Discount.
- It's not quite a premium service, but by paying a bit more, you essentially jump the queue. If 50 people are waiting for a Surprise Discount ride, you'll get prioritized. (Think of it as paid queue-jumping, haha!)
- Usually, you'll get a match within a minute; often, the app will tell you 'within ## seconds!'
❤️🩹DiDi Express (滴滴特快) : Comparable to Uber Black (but less fancy)
- Great when you're in a hurry, but less cost-effective.
- You *might* get a car in slightly better condition (not guaranteed).
- Almost instant matches!
DiDi Fast (滴滴快车) : Like a standard Uber ride
- Again, you *might* get a car in slightly better condition (not guaranteed).
- Honestly, I don't see much reason to choose this over the discounted options.
Not Recommended Options - Unless You're Feeling Adventurous

🙅♂️Shunfengche (顺风车) : Driver Carpool (Rarely available for foreigners)
- Might be possible for city commutes during rush hour, but generally not for travelers.
🙅♂️Pinche (拼车) : Passenger Carpool
- A heads-up: a passenger who boarded after you might get dropped off before you.
🙅♂️🙅🙅♀️Chuzuche (出租车, Taxi) : Standard Street Taxi
- While you call it via the app, it's essentially hailing a regular street taxi, so the fare is based on the meter.
- The price range can be too unpredictable for me, so I've never used it.
Slightly Not Recommended Options - Use at Your Own Discretion
Not my personal preference.
Huaxiaozhu (花小猪) : Third-Party Budget Brand
- A budget brand created by DiDi.
- I once got a car that smelled terrible and never used it again (though it might have just been bad luck, haha).
CaoCao Chuxing (曹操出行) : Premium Vehicle
- A car platform operated by Geely Automobile.
- I've never actually managed to get a ride with this option.
Once a match is confirmed, the screen displays the vehicle's license plate number, model, color, and driver information! You'll see your driver's real-time location and distance, and even how many seconds are left on a red light. It's almost too much information, but for someone prone to being late, it's surprisingly helpful (I guess?).
Oh, and when you get into the car, you'll need to tell the driver the 💡 last four digits of your phone number! Sometimes, drivers need to input this into their system. It's a good idea to memorize these digits in Chinese.
DiDi operates on a post-payment system, meaning you pay after reaching your destination. Simply go back into the WeChat app, tap 'Pay with WeChat' or 'Alipay,' and the linked card will be charged. It's convenient that even within WeChat's DiDi interface, Alipay payment is an option!

A. Nope! You can access it directly within the WeChat app by going to 'Pay and Services' -> 'DiDi Ride-Hailing.'
Q. Which vehicle type should I choose?
