Location & How to Get There

Dazaifu Tenmangu is located in Dazaifu City,

Fukuoka Prefecture.

If you're starting from Fukuoka city center,

taking the Nishitetsu train is the most common route.

For those departing from Hakata, you can catch a direct bus from the bus terminal.

The fare is 800 yen, and the journey takes about 40 minutes.

For those departing from Tenjin, aside from direct trains,

you'll need to go from **Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station**

to **Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station,**

then **transfer to a train bound for Dazaifu.**

After arriving at Dazaifu Station, it's about a 4-minute walk

to reach Dazaifu Tenmangu.

The fare is 420 yen, and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes.

🔻There's an **express train that goes directly** to Dazaifu without transfers.

🔻It runs 6 times a day: at 9:18 AM, 9:48 AM, 10:18 AM, 10:48 AM, 11:18 AM, and 11:48 AM.

📍The Red Bridge and Pond

The first captivating sight you'll encounter upon entering Dazaifu Tenmangu

is the striking red bridge gracefully spanning the pond.

This bridge is **symbolic of the past, present, and future,**

and walking across it signifies purifying your mind

before entering the shrine grounds.

The past represents the time we've lived and

the sins accumulated, and when crossing this part of the bridge,

you must absolutely not look back.

Looking back is believed to mean clinging to past regrets or mistakes,

preventing purification.

The present signifies living faithfully in the moment, unwavering amidst temptations

and distractions, and moving forward steadfastly.

Finally, the future represents hope for what lies ahead,

and there's a **superstition that if you stumble here, your future luck won't be good,**

so be careful not to trip!

📍The Ox Statue

This is the most famous ox statue at Dazaifu Tenmangu.

It's believed that **touching the ox's head will clear your mind**

It is said that you gain wisdom and knowledge,

and if you touch the ox's leg, your health will improve.

📍Making a Wish

Before entering the main hall, in an area called a Temizuya,

you cleanse your mouth and hands with flowing water.

This is a purification ritual to wash away the dust of the secular world before meeting the deities.

The way to make a wish in the main hall follows the '2 bows, 2 claps, 1 bow' custom.

First, you place a coin in the offering box, then **bow twice** at the waist.

Next, **clap your hands twice, and after making your wish,**

you **bow once more**, and you're done!

For the coin, people typically use a 5-yen coin,

as its pronunciation (go-en) is similar to the Japanese word for 'good fortune' or 'connection' (also go-en).

📍Drawing a Fortune Slip

Omikuji (fortune slips) not only reveal general good or bad luck but also

contain specific categories like academics, career paths, and human relationships.

You usually insert around 100 yen for a slip.

After drawing your fortune, it's traditional to tie bad fortunes to a tree

and keep good fortunes with you.

Beyond fortune slips, you can also purchase amulets.

They sell beautiful amulets in a variety of designs,

and prices range from about 500 yen to 1,000 yen.

📍Ancient Camphor Trees

Finally, within the shrine grounds, there are about 100 colossal camphor trees,

and the largest one you'll see is on your way out of the shrine.

These trees are over 1,000 years old,

and as evergreens that remain lush throughout all four seasons,

they symbolize vitality and longevity.

Things to Enjoy

The path leading from Dazaifu Station to the shrine is naturally lined with

shops selling traditional souvenirs, local sweets, and unique small items.

Rather than the typical commercial atmosphere of a tourist spot,

it's designed for a leisurely stroll, making it a perfect stop

to visit before or after your shrine visit.

The unique interior of the Starbucks Dazaifu branch,

designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, is definitely a must-visit alongside the shrine.

Many people love to take commemorative photos here.

You absolutely have to try Umegae Mochi, Dazaifu's signature snack.

The price is about 150-180 yen in cash,

and the taste is similar everywhere, so you can't go wrong no matter which shop you choose.

It's deliciously chewy on the outside and filled with a subtly sweet red bean paste inside.

Dazaifu Tenmangu isn't just a tourist spot for quick photos;

the more you delve into its history and symbolism while exploring at a relaxed pace,
