Daimaru Besso is a ryokan where my mother, older sister, aunt, and cousins—my whole family—traveled together. With a large group and considering our flight the next day, we looked for a place nearby. We loved the atmosphere, which we thought the adults would especially appreciate, so we decided to book it.

The day after our stay here,
it took us approximately 30 minutes to get to Fukuoka Airport.
However, since the airport is located near the city center, traffic can be heavy, so it's a good idea to allow plenty of time for your departure.

* We used Google Maps, but the navigation ended on the opposite side of the road, and we got a bit lost... I found out later that it sometimes directs you to the old main entrance. *
3. Room Views
Heian-tei Room
Capacity: 1~6 people
Standard Japanese-style Room
The room our family booked was the Heian-tei. Built in 1989, it featured two rooms with 10-tatami and 8-tatami mats respectively, and a lovely sitting area by the window.
The biggest reason we chose the Heian-tei (Standard Japanese-style Room) was because we absolutely loved its Hinoki wood bath.
It's deeper than expected, and comfortably sized for two people.

Rengyoan
Capacity: 1 to 6 people
This is the oldest section of Daimaru Besso, beautifully preserving its original charm. With three spacious rooms, it's perfect for family, relatives, or group trips.
Showatei
Capacity: 1 to 3 people
Japanese-style Economy Room
Built in the 1970s, this rustic room exudes a retro vibe, just as its name suggests. It seems like a great option for solo travelers or couples.

There was a small souvenir shop.
The Garden
Honestly, one of the main reasons I chose this ryokan was the desire to take a peaceful stroll through the immaculate garden, keeping my mom's and aunts' preferences in mind.
However, unfortunately, due to a major car accident on the highway, we arrived late at the accommodation and couldn't fully explore it as planned.
5. Onsen ♨️
It was a spacious onsen, with separate male and female baths spanning 100 pyeong (approximately 3,550 sq ft). The rock-bath ambiance, combined with the unique rounded pebble floor, was quite distinctive. However, there had been some significant issues regarding the onsen water quality in the past, which initially made me a bit uneasy. But I convinced myself that perhaps they've improved their management since then, and visited with that 'mind over matter' approach!

6. Kaiseki Dinner 🍲
The highlight of a ryokan stay is definitely Kaiseki, the exquisite Japanese multi-course dinner! However, when I checked the various booking sites, there wasn't a plan available for dinner only.
Since the breakfast timing didn't quite fit our schedule, I booked the accommodation first and then separately requested dinner. It cost approximately ¥8,470 per person, and I was very satisfied with the value for money.
It seemed like there was also a fugu (pufferfish) course available for an additional charge, but I recall the price being higher.
I wondered what this watermelon shape was, and it turned out to be mentaiko (spicy pollack roe)! Fukuoka is famous for mentaiko, isn't it? These dishes were delicious and a feast for the eyes.
Steamed cherry tomatoes with lemon were served in a bowl,
and they were so refreshing.
A soup with fish, mushrooms, and ginkgo nuts was also served
in an earthenware bowl,
and we even got Wagyu steak!
For our final dessert, we had
Kuromitsu Warabi Mochi
(a sweet rice cake made from bracken starch) and mango pudding.
Our dishes were gracefully prepared and served by an elderly server dressed in a kimono.
Both the food and the ambiance of this kaiseki meal were wonderful, so I was incredibly satisfied 🧡

The Heian-tei room is a standard Japanese-style room that can accommodate 1 to 6 people. Built in 1989, it features two rooms with 10 and 8 tatami mats respectively, a window-side living area, and a cypress (hinoki) bath.
There is no dinner-only plan available when booking accommodation. You must request dinner separately after booking your stay. In this case, a Kaiseki dinner costs approximately ~$53 per person.
The hot spring operating hours at Daimaru Besso are from 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM, and from 11:30 AM to 11:00 PM. The men's and women's baths offer a generous space of 100 pyeong.
Check-in is available from 3:00 PM until midnight, and check-out is from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Free parking is also provided for guests.
