Hello fellow travelers! Miya here, and I'm excited to share a true hidden gem I stumbled upon near Hakata Station. As a serious noodle lover, I simply couldn't pass up the chance to try this famously delicious udon spot. Honestly, I went in with no huge expectations, but it completely blew me away! It was so incredibly good that I just had to write this post to tell you all about it!
I'll cover everything you need to know about
Daichi no Udon, from its location and my 'open run' experience to ordering tips and a full taste review, all in one go!
Daichi no Udon is conveniently located on the B2 level of the Fukuoka Asahi Building.
You can access it from the ground level or via an underground pathway directly from the west side of Hakata Station. This is super handy if you're carrying luggage or visiting on a rainy day!
Operating Hours:
✔️ 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Last Order 3:30 PM)
✔️ 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Last Order 8:55 PM)
Waiting (Open Run Experience)
The restaurant officially opens at 10:00 AM, but I arrived around 9:50 AM, and to my surprise, there were already about 30 people waiting! I had no idea it was *that* popular before my visit, so I thought I could take my time. Lesson learned!
Despite the crowd, I was lucky enough to get a seat in the first wave of customers. The restaurant is actually quite spacious, so if you're not a huge group, you'll likely get in if you're among the first 40 or so.
Ordering Tip (Decide Your Menu Early)
Once the line starts to move, you'll see the menu board outside the restaurant. Good news, it has English translations, making it easy to browse!
Here's a pro tip: decide which udon you want and note its corresponding number *before* you enter. This makes ordering at the kiosk a breeze :)
Daichi no Udon is famous for its burdock root tempura (goboten udon), so I went with option #21, the Meat Burdock Tempura Udon. If you have a bigger appetite, they also offer set menus that include rice – definitely recommended!
Kiosk Ordering (Cash Only!)
The vending machine-style ordering system might look intimidating if you don't speak Japanese, but it's actually quite simple:
First, insert your cash, then press the number corresponding to your chosen menu item. That's it!
Once your ticket prints, a staff member will collect it and guide you to your seat.
Crucially, payment is cash only, so make sure you have yen on hand!
Seating / Restaurant Vibe
I was directed to a counter seat, which is typical for many Japanese eateries. Behind the counter, there were also a good number of table seats available.
The place was constantly packed, so I couldn't get a full shot of the interior, but this gives you a general idea of the atmosphere.
At my counter seat, each spot was equipped with wooden chopsticks, shichimi (Japanese seven-spice blend), and toothpicks, ready for diners.
Meat Burdock Tempura Udon (#21) Review
The bowl might look small in the picture, but trust me, it's about the size of an adult's face! The burdock root tempura was enormous – I was genuinely surprised and had trouble even picking it up with my chopsticks.
Lifting the burdock tempura revealed a generous serving of noodles and tender meat underneath. Considering the price of around ~$5, it felt like incredible value for money.
The noodles were perfectly chewy, bouncy, yet incredibly soft. The udon broth wasn't overly salty, and the tempura wasn't greasy at all, making for a truly delicious experience. The meat, however, did get a *little* rich towards the end.
I've visited Fukuoka so many times that I sometimes feel like I've seen it all, but this udon was so good it makes me want to go back just for another bowl!
Luggage can be left at the entrance
Even after I finished my meal and left, the line was still going strong. But don't worry, udon is a quick meal, so the turnover is excellent, meaning the wait usually isn't too long – another big plus!
If you're a noodle or udon enthusiast like me, I highly recommend adding Daichi no Udon to your Fukuoka itinerary!
