1. Dahuochun Shanghai: Location & Operating Hours
China boasts countless fantastic dumpling spots.
Even after seeking out dumpling gems on this trip, it felt like there were still so many more to discover.
This time, I'm thrilled to introduce Dahuochun, a Michelin Guide-recognized eatery.
Dahuochun is said to be a local institution, preserving the charm of a century-old establishment.

From a distance, the vibrant red lanterns and golden Chinese character sign warmly welcome you.
The somewhat antiquated entrance exudes an authentic local vibe.
There are several Dahuochun locations across Shanghai, many conveniently situated near major tourist attractions, making them perfect stops during your travel itinerary.

Operating hours are 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
They open early and close relatively early, so avoid late-night visits.
Stepping inside, your eyes are immediately drawn to the vibrant red Michelin Guide emblem.
This establishment has consistently been recognized in the Michelin Guide Shanghai Bib Gourmand for many years, a testament to its unwavering quality.
A key point to remember when entering Dahuochun: outside food from other restaurants is not permitted.
After selecting our dumplings and completing payment, we waited briefly and took in our surroundings.

On one side of the restaurant, there's a self-service bar stocked with sauces and utensils for customers.
The interior and tableware are well-maintained, giving a strong impression of cleanliness.
I've attached the location on Gaode Map for the Dahuochun Zhejiang Zhonglu branch I visited below.

2. Dahuochun Shanghai Menu
Dahuochun's menu is, without a doubt, all about dumplings.
Pork dumplings and whole shrimp dumplings are their most popular offerings.

The interior isn't very spacious, with only about 5-6 tables, giving it a cozy feel.
Chinese posters on the walls and aged wooden tables reveal traces of its long history.
Although the space is small, it features an open kitchen, allowing you to watch the chefs at work.
Through the large glass window, you can directly observe chefs in white uniforms and hats bustling about.
While communication can be difficult as the kitchen staff don't speak English, and they might seem a bit unfriendly, their quiet dedication to cooking exudes a professional aura.
Beyond dumplings, they also sell items like pancakes.
In a display case on one side of the store, round breads piled high in rattan baskets caught my eye.
The red Chinese character stamps on their surfaces felt distinctly authentic.

A digital menu board is installed above the counter.
It was entirely in Chinese, so I couldn't tell what any of the dishes were.

Then, they presented me with a printed English menu.
Basic prices range from 11 to 18 Yuan.
Despite being a Michelin-recognized spot, you can get a satisfying meal for around 15 Yuan, offering incredible value for money.
You can choose from various types of Shengjianbao, from classic pork to shrimp and crab roe fillings.
Recommended Menu
1) Fried meat buns (pork): 11 Yuan
2) Fried prawn & meat buns: 20 Yuan
5) Mixed: 30.5 Yuan
3. Dahuochun Shanghai Dumpling Review
The steamed dumplings are lightly pan-fried on the bottom, making them look incredibly appetizing!

It's fascinating to watch the dumplings being grilled on the large, dark cast-iron griddle through the glass window.
As you observe the steaming and grilling process, the savory aroma wafts up, tantalizing your senses.
Dahuochun's dumplings are made in the 'Benbang' style, using fermented dough, which gives them a distinctively thick and fluffy wrapper.
The tops are generously sprinkled with black sesame seeds and chopped green onions, enhancing their flavor.

As the dining area is a bit small, I opted for takeout for a more comfortable experience.
They were neatly packed in a clear plastic container.
Lightly pan-fried to a crisp, the surface looked incredibly appealing.

I picked one up with my chopsticks and took a bite.
The top part offered a delightful contrast of soft yet slightly crispy dumpling skin.
The bottom, in particular, was grilled to a perfect crisp, almost like scorched rice, creating an excellent textural contrast with every bite.
You get chewiness and crunchiness all at once – truly the epitome of 'crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside'.

These dumplings were incredibly juicy.
And with the crispy bottom, you experience a rich and crunchy sensation simultaneously.
Even now, thinking about them makes my mouth water.
If you're traveling to Shanghai, why not try visiting in the morning for dumplings and Doujiang (soy milk)?
If you're looking for a soup, I recommend trying their Wonton Noodles as well.
Tip
Operating Hours: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM
Basic Dumplings (4 pieces): 11 Yuan
Recommended Combo: Dumplings + Doujiang + Wonton Noodles
Dahuochun (大壶春) is a chain restaurant.
📍 Fuzhou Road Cultural Street, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China (Postal Code: 200002)
Daehochun operates from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM. It's advisable to visit earlier in the day, as they might close if you arrive late in the evening.
At Daehochun, pork dumplings and whole shrimp dumplings are the most popular. Pork dumplings (4 pieces) cost 11 Yuan, and whole shrimp & pork dumplings cost 20 Yuan.
Daehochun dumplings are made in the 'Bonbang' style, using fermented dough, characterized by their thick and fluffy wrappers. They are steamed and then lightly pan-fried on the bottom, offering a crispy exterior and a juicy interior. Black sesame seeds and chopped green onions are sprinkled on top to enhance the flavor.
While English communication at Daehochun can be challenging, a printed English menu is available. Kitchen staff do not speak English at all, so communication might feel a bit inconvenient.
