Not long ago, my family and I gathered

in downtown Daegu to enjoy a 2-day, 1-night trip.

I arrived a day earlier on my own, taking my time to

explore various attractions in the city center on foot,

truly soaking in the local charm.

Amidst the bustling streets of Dongseongno and Banwoldang,

in the heart of the city, I sought a moment of tranquility.

My footsteps led me to the magnificent Gyesan Cathedral,

a renowned Catholic pilgrimage site and a well-known stop

along the Pilgrimage Route.

It's also famous as a filming location for popular dramas like

'When Life Gives You Tangerines' (폭싹 속았수다) and movies like 'The Priests'.

​

Regardless of your faith,

gazing upon the exotic yet serene atmosphere created by its

red bricks and tranquil spires,

I found myself a peaceful moment of rest and contemplation.

Before meeting up with my family,

I leisurely explored the charming alleys and corners of Daegu's city center.

Now, let me walk you through everything about Gyesan Cathedral –

its location, its stunning scenery, and even its mass times.

2. Location and Mass Times

While there is a parking lot available on-site,

the cathedral itself is quite compact, and so is its parking space.

During mass times, it's exclusively reserved for worshippers.

Therefore, if you're driving, it's recommended to park at a nearby

paid or public parking lot and then walk to the cathedral.

For those visiting Gyesan Cathedral, a small but charming Daegu travel spot,

by public transportation, you can easily reach it within a 10-minute walk

towards Yakjeon Alley (Yaknyeongsi) from either Exit 18 of Banwoldang Station

(Daegu Subway Line 1 or 2) or Exit 9 of Cheongna Hill Station (Daegu Subway Line 2).

Now, even 'Daefrica' (a playful nickname for Daegu, combining 'Daegu' and 'Africa' due to its hot summers)

is starting to enjoy cool autumn breezes, making the walk quite pleasant!

During mass times, interior viewing and photography are restricted for tourists

to respect the prayers and liturgy of the worshippers.

For a more relaxed visit, it's best to plan your visit outside of mass hours.

I visited not for religious reasons,

but as a must-see Daegu attraction,

quietly exploring it during my solo trip.

3. History and Scenery

Daegu Gyesan Cathedral, a Catholic holy site on the Pilgrim's Path,

began as a modest Korean-style main building in 1886

and was completed in 1902 as the first Western-style cathedral

in the Yeongnam region.

Though small in scale, it's a precious cultural heritage of Korea,

designated Historic Site No. 290, making it a worthwhile Daegu tourist spot to visit.

It was originally a Hanok (traditional Korean house) style building,

but unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire. Afterwards,

it was reborn through the design of Father Robert as the exotic

Gothic-style building we see today, blending red brick and stone.

It's now a beloved pilgrimage site and a must-visit attraction

in downtown Daegu.

At the front stands a large cross guarding the cathedral,

which was erected in the year Gyesan Cathedral marked its 25th anniversary

as a bishop's seat.

In 1986, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the cathedral's founding,

a small park area with benches for resting was created.

Here, you'll find a statue of the first priest, Father Robert,

surrounded by texts and photos chronicling the cathedral's history.

While it's considered a modest-sized building today,

back when the surrounding area was filled with single-story thatched

and tiled-roof houses, it truly stood out as a prominent landmark

in downtown Daegu.

The stained glass above the altar inside is said

to have been crafted in France and brought over,

and the floral patterns on the windows are simply beautiful.

It's a modest yet exotic Catholic holy site and a Daegu tourist attraction

that shines even more brightly when the light streams in.

I've just introduced you to Gyesan Cathedral, a must-visit spot in Daegu

that holds the long history of local Catholicism.

Amidst the vibrant and bustling attractions of downtown Daegu,

this significant pilgrimage site offered over a century of history,

depth, and a gift of serene tranquility.

With the cool autumn breeze making it perfect for walking these days,

I recommend combining your visit with Yakjeon Alley or Cheongna Hill

as part of a walking tour, following the Pilgrim's Path for a peaceful outing.

Even with a packed travel schedule, I hope you can find a warm moment of pause
