The very first step of your Nagoya adventure:
Getting from Chubu Centrair International Airport to downtown!
Since it was my first time at Nagoya Airport,
I was so confused by all the terms—Meitetsu? μ-SKY? What on earth are those?
But once I actually got there and hopped on, it was way easier than I thought!
How to get to Sakae Station
Which train you should actually take
And where to buy tickets to get the best deal
Today, I've got everything laid out and sorted for you in one go! :)
Even first-timers will be totally fine with just this guide. 😊
Nagoya Chubu Airport to Downtown (Sakae Station)
There are generally 3 main ways
to get from Nagoya Airport to downtown Sakae.

1) Meitetsu Railway (μ-SKY or Limited Express)
This is the dedicated airport railway
connecting Chubu Centrair Airport directly to Nagoya city center.
It's the fastest and most budget-friendly option,
making it the top choice for travelers!

This photo is for reference.
2) Airport Limousine Bus
There is a direct bus heading towards the Sakae area.
While it's convenient because there are no transfers, the fare is 2,000 yen
and it can take over an hour if traffic is heavy.
Since it's on the pricier side, not necessarily faster,
and runs only about once an hour,
it's actually not a very popular choice. 🤣

3) Taxi
If you have a ton of luggage and are traveling in a larger group, you might consider it, but...
The fare is around 16,000 yen... so honestly, I'd say pass. 😂
** If you really need a private ride, I'd highly recommend booking
an airport transfer service via Klook instead.
Since you pay in advance,
you don't have to worry about extra fees even if the ride takes longer.
Plus, you can choose your vehicle type, making it way more convenient!

μ-SKY vs. Limited Express: What's the Difference?

🚝 μ-SKY (μSKY)
- Reserved Seating Only
(Requires purchasing an additional "μ-Ticket" for 450 yen)
- Airport → Nagoya Station: approx. 28 mins (The fastest!)
- Spacious luggage storage area and highly comfortable seats
- Note: No seat changes or refunds allowed
(buying on board costs an extra 500 yen)

🚅 Limited Express
- Non-Reserved Seating (Just regular fare, no extra seat fee!)
- Airport → Nagoya Station: approx. 37 mins
- Takes only about 10 minutes longer than the μ-SKY
- Can get crowded during rush hour, which might be a bit tight
if you have bulky luggage
- But you save 450 yen!

I ended up taking the Meitetsu Limited Express (Non-Reserved).
The reason? Simply great value for money.
The travel time difference between the μ-SKY and the Limited Express
to Sakae Station is only about 10 minutes.
But the μ-SKY requires an extra
450 yen seat-reservation fee on top of the base fare.
Paying extra just to get there 10 minutes faster? Not worth it for me! 😂
If you have a massive amount of luggage or are exhausted from your flight
and absolutely need a guaranteed seat, I’d say go for the μ-SKY.
But if you're traveling relatively light like me,
the Limited Express is more than enough!
Nagoya Meitetsu Train Tickets

You can buy your Meitetsu Airport Line tickets
either on-site or online,
but I highly recommend booking online.
First of all, it's cheaper than buying on-site!
You can grab them at a discount compared to the regular walk-up price.
If you’re traveling with family or a group, those savings really add up!
On-site: 980 yen → Online: ~$6
👉 Buy your Nagoya Meitetsu Express E-Ticket here

As for buying on-site, as soon as you step out of the arrivals hall...
Not only do you have to wait in line at the ticket counter,
but it's also more expensive—so there's really no benefit!
Trying to state your destination in Japanese
while fumbling in front of the ticket machine...
You’ll feel completely drained before your trip even begins! 🤣

But if you buy your tickets online in advance,
you can breeze right through the gates with just a single QR code!
No lines, and absolutely zero Japanese needed.
Since you can use it anytime within 30 days of your booking date,
even if you're worried about sudden schedule changes,
you don't have to stress at all!
Buying it completely stress-free is a massive plus. :)

Heads up if you're planning to ride the μ-SKY!
Just buy the discounted Meitetsu ticket online first,
and then grab a reserved seat ticket on-site
for just ~$3 separately to board -
Don't pay full price at the counter—
at least save on the base fare with this discount!

🗺️ How to Transfer to Sakae Station
Since there is no direct Meitetsu train to Sakae Station,
a transfer is required! You can choose between two main transfer points.

① Transfer at Kanayama Station (Recommended!)
Meitetsu Line → Get off at Kanayama Station →
Board the Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijo Line (Purple Line)
→ Sakae Station (4 stops, approx. 10 mins)
From Kanayama Station to Sakae Station,
it's just 4 stops on the subway Meijo Line (Purple Line).
The transfer is incredibly simple,
and it's much less crowded and confusing than Nagoya Station—highly recommended!

② Transfer at Nagoya Station
Meitetsu Line → Get off at Nagoya Station →
Transfer to the Nagoya Municipal Subway Higashiyama Line
or Sakura-dori Line → Sakae Station
Nagoya Station is a major transit hub,
so while it offers more transfer options,
it's massive and busy, which might get a bit overwhelming!
My Real Meitetsu Train Experience

Just follow the 'Train' signs at the airport,
and you’ll easily find the ticket gates
for Meitetsu Central Japan International Airport Station.
It’s surprisingly straightforward, so you won’t get lost!

Once you pass through the gates, check the departure screens
and head to either Platform 2 or Platform 3.
If you are taking the regular Limited Express, make sure to board Car 3 or higher.
Cars 1 and 2 are reserved-seat-only sections for the μ-SKY,
so you can't ride them with a standard ticket!

The train interior is clean,
and there was plenty of room for suitcases.
It takes about 37 minutes from the airport to Kanayama Station!
How to Transfer from Kanayama Station to Sakae Station

Once you get off at Kanayama Station,
follow the signs for the subway line and head down one floor!
Next, at the yellow ticket kiosks,
you can buy your subway ticket to Sakae Station.
It supports multiple languages (including English), so it's super easy! (~$1)

After buying your ticket, go through the gates
and take the purple Meijo Line (名城線).
Just 4 stops and about 10 minutes later, you'll arrive at Sakae Station!

Getting from Nagoya Chubu Airport to downtown
Whichever option you choose,
make sure to book your tickets online!
You get to skip the lines,
avoid struggling with any Japanese,
save money compared to buying on-site,
and breeze right through with a quick QR code scan -
On your first day and the day you head home,
saving your precious energy is a total pro-traveler move 😎
👉 Book Your Nagoya Airport Train Tickets in Just 1 Minute
Nagoya Meitetsu Airport Express Train Tickets - Klook
The μ-SKY takes about 28 minutes and requires an additional 450 JPY reserved seat ticket on top of the basic fare. On the other hand, the regular Limited Express takes about 37 minutes and allows you to use non-reserved seats with just the basic fare, at no extra cost.
We recommend transferring at Kanayama Station instead of the large and complex Nagoya Station. Take the Meitetsu Line, get off at Kanayama Station, and transfer to the Subway Meijo Line. You will arrive at Sakae Station in just 4 stops.
Purchasing on-site costs 980 JPY, but if you book online, you can get it for a cheaper price of ~$6. Additionally, you don't need to wait at the ticket counter; you can pass directly through the gates using the issued QR code, which is valid for 30 days from the reservation date.
Passengers with regular Limited Express tickets must board Car 3 or higher. Cars 1 and 2 operate exclusively as reserved seating (μ-SKY), so they cannot be accessed with a regular ticket.
