First, let's break down the advantages and disadvantages of independent travel versus package tours.

We've organized them into a table for you below.

With so many travel shows nowadays, many people dream of independent travel.

Indeed, independent travel offers the advantage of creating your own itinerary and routes as you wish,

and can often be more budget-friendly.

However, when it comes to traveling in China, there are several significant disadvantages that can outweigh the benefits of independent travel.

First, you won't be able to use familiar apps like Google Maps that you rely on at home,

and payments often require using apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay, which means quite a bit of research and setup.

Moreover, if you're venturing beyond urban tourist spots to natural attractions in the countryside,

finding independent travel information can be quite challenging.

Most importantly, in China, where language can be a significant barrier,

it can be difficult to get help if problems arise.

Therefore, even though it might mean less itinerary flexibility and a slightly higher travel cost,

However, when choosing a package tour, even if it's a bit pricier,

opt for one that includes 'no shopping' and 'no optional tours' to avoid any inconveniences.

Additionally, if it also includes 'no tips,' you can enjoy an even more reasonable and seamless travel experience.

Top 5 Recommended Destinations for Your First Trip to China

While some of you might be seasoned travelers to China,

we imagine many more are planning their very first visit.

So, we'll recommend five incredible destinations perfect for your inaugural journey to China.

1. Shanghai

Our first recommended Chinese destination is Shanghai,

China's wealthiest city, brimming with sights, delicious food, and endless entertainment.

Nanjing Road East in downtown Shanghai is a bustling hub where you'll find everything from department stores to renowned restaurants.

And at the end of this vibrant street lies The Bund, offering truly breathtaking night views.

You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this area!

And right in the city center, you'll find places to soak in the vibrant atmosphere like Xintiandi,

or the

Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea Memorial Hall, which holds significant ties to Korean history.

What's more, just outside the city, you'll find Zhujiajiao Water Town, a picturesque waterside gem.

Gondolas glide through the canals winding through the village,

and its traditional atmosphere is so captivating,

you'll find yourself instinctively reaching for your camera.

Just a short trip from the city center, you can also experience the authentic local vibe where residents truly live.

It offers a completely different charm from downtown Shanghai,

making it a fantastic two-for-one travel experience!

2. Zhangjiajie

The second Chinese travel destination I'd love to recommend is

none other than Zhangjiajie.

Zhangjiajie is famously known as the inspiration for the movie Avatar,

and when you visit in person, you'll feel as if you've stepped right into the world of Avatar.

In other words, it's a destination where you can experience natural landscapes unlike anything you've ever seen,

offering breathtaking scenery that will truly leave you speechless!

Beyond its incredible natural wonders like Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain,

you can also enjoy unique experiences such as the Glass Skywalk, the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, and Huanglong Cave,

guaranteeing an unforgettable adventure!

My parents were so impressed with Zhangjiajie, they actually visited twice!

However, in terms of transportation, Zhangjiajie is considerably more challenging for independent travel than Shanghai, which I mentioned earlier.

So, I personally recommend booking a package tour for this destination.

3. Qingdao

My third recommended travel destination is Qingdao.

Qingdao is a city so synonymous with beer that it immediately comes to mind for many.

Indeed, you'll find a Beer Museum in the city center,

and street beer stalls are ubiquitous,

making it the perfect destination to soak in Chinese charm and enjoy fantastic beer.

Among the various beers, the 'unpasteurized draft beer' (Wonjang Maekju), with its live yeast,

is one of the biggest highlights of a trip to Qingdao.

Unlike typical beers, it has a slightly milder carbonation,

but its smooth, refreshing finish

makes it truly special and delicious.

In Qingdao, you can enjoy this unpasteurized draft beer to your heart's content at various restaurants and street stalls.

Beyond the beer, the tourist attractions are also well worth exploring.

Nestled along the coast, it offers stunning ocean views,

and you can catch a spectacular laser show at May Fourth Square (Wusi Square),

or wander through streets with a distinct German vibe.

You'll discover a charm that's wonderfully different from what you might have expected from China.

Qingdao, being an urban travel destination,

makes it a fantastic choice for your very first trip to China.

4. Beijing

Our fourth recommended destination is none other than Beijing!

As the capital of China, Beijing might sometimes be overshadowed by other tourist spots, but for history enthusiasts,

it promises to be the most profoundly impressive travel destination.

Just within Beijing city, you'll find a deep history brought to life with countless sights!

From iconic spots like Tiananmen Square, the majestic Forbidden City, and the serene Temple of Heaven, there's so much to see.

Then there's bustling Wangfujing, perfect for shopping and delicious eats,

and charming local market areas brimming with sights like Shichahai and

Qianmen Street—truly, there's an endless list of places to explore!

Just outside the city, you'll find historical marvels you've only ever dreamt of seeing in textbooks, like the iconic Great Wall of China and the stunning Summer Palace.

These are places where you can truly grasp the immense wealth and grand scale of ancient China, making them absolute must-sees!

And here's a tip: especially around November, when the autumn leaves are at their peak,

you can enjoy the stunning autumn foliage alongside these historical gems,

making it an absolutely perfect time to visit.

Given Beijing is brimming with so many must-see historical sites,

you'll want at least 3 nights and 4 days to truly soak it all in.

And because understanding the cultural and historical context truly enhances the experience,

a package tour might actually be more enriching than a solo, free-and-easy adventure here.

5. Baekdusan (Mount Paektu)

Finally, the last travel destination I absolutely want to recommend is

the majestic Cheonji Lake (Heaven Lake) at Baekdusan!

To reach Baekdusan's stunning Cheonji Lake,

you'll need to travel to Yanji first.

Because the journey is quite long and the travel logistics can be challenging,

it's not really a destination you can easily tackle as an independent traveler.

You can access Baekdusan's Cheonji Lake via both the West Slope and the North Slope,

and depending on the day's weather, you'll witness a spectacular array of diverse landscapes,

promising a truly unique and unforgettable experience!

Personally, I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing Baekdusan's Cheonji Lake at least once in your lifetime –

I truly believe it will be an incredibly meaningful day.

What's more, when you journey to Baekdusan,

you'll also get to savor a variety of delicious local dishes, like Yanbian Naengmyeon (cold noodles),

which you might not find elsewhere!
