Chilammanjang Gijang: Busan's Go-To for Family Eel Hot Pot

After a recent trip to Japan, one dish kept lingering in my mind even after returning home: hitsumabushi. That warm rice topped with freshwater eel was unforgettable, and I found myself constantly craving it. I started searching for a similar, authentic experience back home in Busan and stumbled upon Chilammanjang.
I wasn't just looking for a place that served eel; I wanted a proper set meal with hot pot rice. Chilammanjang perfectly fit the bill! After my visit, I knew this was an ideal spot for a family outing in Gijang, and I'm already planning to bring my parents here next time.
1. Chilammanjang Location & Operating Hours
A Must-Visit Eel Restaurant in Gijang

Chilammanjang's main branch is nestled in Chilam-ri, Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun. Its prime location near Chilam Breakwater makes it a fantastic stop during a scenic coastal drive through Gijang and Ilgwang. It’s perfect for combining a delicious meal with a charming day out, making it easy to plan your Gijang itinerary around it.

When you're heading out with kids or older family members, parking can often be a headache, especially in Gijang where driving is a must. Chilammanjang boasts ample parking, making arrivals stress-free. It's a huge plus not to be worn out before even stepping inside, especially when you're juggling kid's gear or assisting seniors.
2. Ambiance: Spacious Dining Across Three Zones
Comfortable Spaces on 1st, 2nd Floor, and a Separate Annex

Upon arrival, I was struck by the sheer size of the place. The dining area spans two floors, with an additional separate annex building, offering three distinct spaces for guests.
The restaurant also features a beautifully landscaped garden, giving it a uniquely relaxed feel compared to typical eel eateries. It felt more open and welcoming, which was a relief when dining with my child.

When planning a family meal, the atmosphere is just as crucial as the food itself, especially ensuring parents can dine comfortably. Chilammanjang certainly delivers on this front, making it an excellent choice for family gatherings in Gijang, whether with children, parents, or both.
3. From Eel to Hot Pot: A Menu for Every Palate
Chilammanjang: A Premier Eel Restaurant in Gijang

As expected from a top Gijang eel restaurant, freshwater eel is the star, but they also offer a fantastic variety of hot pot rice dishes. Options range from Freshwater Eel Hot Pot to Sirloin, Scallop, Abalone Seaweed, and even Eggplant Soboro Hot Pot. This ensures everyone in the family, even those not keen on eel, can find something delicious.
For the Freshwater Eel Charcoal Grill, you can choose between soy sauce or gochujang (spicy red pepper paste) seasoning. We opted for the set meal, which included the Freshwater Eel Charcoal Grill and Gondre Hot Pot Rice.

For me, someone who craved eel with warm rice, this combination was perfect. It’s also a menu worth noting for anyone seeking a great hot pot rice spot in Gijang.
They also had a selection of refreshing drinks like bokbunja (Korean raspberry) ade, lemon ade, sikhye (sweet rice punch), and sodas. I tried the bokbunja ade, and it was wonderfully sweet and tangy!
4. My Experience: Freshwater Eel Charcoal Grill Set
Gijang's Premier Eel Dining Experience

Unlike some places where you grill the eel yourself, Chilammanjang serves their eel perfectly cooked at your table. They proudly use fresh, domestically sourced freshwater eel, prepared daily, and grilled over bamboo charcoal, which imparts a delightful, subtle smoky aroma.
The eel was crispy on the outside, yet incredibly tender and savory on the inside. I'm usually quite sensitive to the 'fishy' smell of eel, but this was perfectly clean and enjoyable.
You can choose between soy sauce or gochujang-based sauces for the grilled eel. Since I was with my child, I opted for the soy sauce base, and my little one absolutely loved it.

Paired with the Gondre Hot Pot Rice and a selection of pristine side dishes, it made for a truly satisfying meal. I came here longing for a taste similar to the Japanese hitsumabushi, and I left feeling like I'd experienced a truly authentic and delicious Korean freshwater eel hot pot set.
5. Why Chilammanjang is Perfect for Multi-Generational Family Dining in Busan
Busan's Best for Family Dining

After dining here, I truly felt this was one of Chilammanjang's biggest strengths. They provided baby chairs for my child, and even offered a dedicated kids' menu.
My child ordered the Spam and Egg Hot Pot Rice. It arrived warm, topped with savory spam, a perfectly cooked egg, and a sprinkle of furikake (rice seasoning). My child devoured it, which was a huge relief! It was great not having to compromise on menu choices, with adults enjoying eel and gondre hot pot, and kids having a familiar favorite.

It’s also an excellent choice for dining with older parents. Since the eel is pre-grilled, there's no smoke or fuss over cooking at the table, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy. The tender eel and hearty hot pot rice set make for a comforting and satisfying meal. And the grand finale? The savory nurungji (scorched rice soup) from the hot pot, a classic Korean finish!

With easy parking, ample space, a dedicated kids' menu, and baby chairs, Chilammanjang truly stands out as a place where three generations can comfortably dine together.
Though I visited with just my child this time, I'm already planning my next visit to bring my parents along!
