Honestly, if you make it all the way to Cancun and don't see this?
You'd be missing out big time!
The pyramids aren't just in Egypt!
The awe-inspiring moment you first lay eyes on the majestic El Castillo is truly moving... 🥹
It's about a 3.5-hour drive from Cancun, so it's not exactly close.
But considering how far Mexico is from many parts of the world, dedicating one day to this incredible site is absolutely worth it.
I explored it as part of a day tour 🔽

2. Detailed Review of the Cancun Pingsechi Tour: Chichen Itza
Cancun is always popular, but during the peak holiday season at the end of 2025, Chichen Itza was incredibly crowded.
You can see how busy it was just at the ticket counter, right?
The original schedule typically involves visiting Pink Lagoon in the morning, having lunch, then heading to Ik Kil Cenote and Chichen Itza.
However, because of the massive crowds during the holiday season, our guide made a smart decision to adjust the schedule dynamically.
We visited Chichen Itza in the morning instead, which allowed us to experience it with fewer people.
Thanks to our experienced guide, we had a smooth and enjoyable tour day!
Chichen Itza in Mexico's Yucatan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.
The site itself is quite expansive, so be prepared for a fair amount of walking ⭐
This main structure, known as El Castillo, gives you a sense of the sheer scale of the entire complex, doesn't it?
It's not just big; it holds several mysterious secrets!
For instance, during the spring and autumn equinoxes, a serpent's shadow appears due to its astronomical design.
And if you stand at a certain spot in front of the stairs (pictured on the right) and clap, an echo resembling a bird's chirp returns 🫢
Considering Chichen Itza is a remnant of the Mayan civilization, believed to have been built around the 10th century, it's astonishing that such advanced engineering was possible back then!
A helpful tip: on the way to Chichen Itza, our tour van showed the movie <Apocalypto>.
It's an older, somewhat graphic film about the Mayan civilization, and while I initially wondered why we were watching it, it's a must-see before visiting Chichen Itza.
Discussions about Mayan civilization can be hard to grasp, but watching the movie beforehand helped me understand the purpose and significance of these incredible structures.
This naturally leads to my strong recommendation for opting for a guided Pingsechi tour when visiting Chichen Itza!
3. Why a Knowledgeable Guide is Essential for the Cancun Pingsechi Tour
First, the Pingsechi tour I took was incredibly efficient, allowing us to experience three amazing sites in one day, which I really appreciated.
The second reason is that the history of Chichen Itza is complex.
It's not enough to just see the pyramids; you need to understand *why* they were built and their profound significance!
Around El Castillo, you'll find various other structures like the Tzompantli (left) and the Great Ball Court (right), each with its own significant meaning.
The Tzompantli, for example, depicts rows of skulls, representing human sacrifices offered to the gods – quite chilling!
And the ball court wasn't just for sport; losing a game could mean losing your life, showcasing the intense aspects of Mayan civilization.
It would be incredibly challenging to understand all this intricate history without a detailed explanation.
A knowledgeable guide truly enhances your appreciation of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
And they take great pictures too!
Since most of the tour group were fellow travelers, we also helped each other with photos, which made the experience even more comfortable.
Everyone's photography skills were definitely above average! ^_^
