So today, I'm excited to share some fantastic spots in Cheongsong that are perfect for a cool summer escape. It might not be one of the most famous summer destinations, but that's precisely why it's such a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing place to explore. 😊

In this post, I've curated a list of three amazing must-visit places in Cheongsong, along with a recommended itinerary to help you make the most of your trip!

If you find yourself in Cheongsong, Juwangsan National Park is an absolute must-visit!

It's renowned as one of Korea's three greatest rocky mountains, boasting a breathtaking blend of majestic rock cliffs, pristine valleys, and cascading waterfalls. Even if you're not an avid hiker, you'll find plenty to marvel at and enjoy here.

The park offers various exploration courses, including the Juwang Valley Course, Jubong Peak Course, Jeolgol Valley Course, Janggunbong Peak ~ Geumeungwangi Course, Woloe Course, and Gatbawi Rock Course.

The most popular trail is undoubtedly the scenic path from Sangui Parking Lot, leading past Daejeonsa Temple all the way to Yongchu Falls (a delightful ~2.7km stretch from Daejeonsa Temple to Yongchu Falls).

With a well-maintained, flat wooden deck path and very few stairs, you can easily complete the round trip in about two hours. The gentle slope makes it accessible even for children and strollers, truly making it a wonderful destination for families of all ages.

Eoreumgol Valley (Ice Valley)

Cheongsong's Eoreumgol Valley is also nestled within Juwangsan National Park.

True to its name, Eoreumgol (Ice Valley) is a fascinating wonder where, in the middle of summer, when outside temperatures soar above 32℃, ice miraculously forms in the rock crevices of the valley!

This incredible phenomenon is attributed to a unique weather pattern: warm breezes emerge in winter, while refreshingly cold air flows out in summer.

Eoreumgol Valley is incredibly well-equipped with amenities like camping grounds, shower facilities, restrooms, convenience stores, and restaurants, making it a beloved destination for families seeking a refreshing summer retreat.

You'll also find a stunning artificial waterfall there, perfect for completely banishing the summer heat! 🧊

Come winter, the artificial waterfall transforms into a magnificent ice wall, attracting professional mountaineers who challenge themselves with ice climbing.

Before anything else, just take a look at these photos—it's truly breathtaking!

Jusanji Pond is also conveniently located within Juwangsan National Park. From the Jusanji Parking Lot, it's about a 2-3km walk, but don't worry—the path has a gentle slope, so it’s not strenuous at all! You can easily stroll along, chatting and enjoying the scenery, for about 15 minutes until you reach it.

I first learned about Cheongsong's Jusannji Lake after watching Director Kim Ki-duk's film "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring." That scene, floating on the calm water, stayed with me for a long, long time.

It turns out that photography enthusiasts from all over the country flock here in the early morning to capture Jusannji's unique water fog.

Jusannji is an artificial reservoir that began construction in August 1720, the first year of King Gyeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, and was completed in October of the following year.

They say it's better to visit here after it rains when the water is plentiful, because during severe droughts, the ancient willow tree trunks are exposed. When the water was full, the willows reflected perfectly on the surface, creating a truly picturesque scene.

It's not extremely large, so you can walk around it in about 20 minutes, but strangely, I couldn't bring myself to leave. I just sat on a bench, 'water gazing' (물멍) for ages. If you're tired of bustling tourist spots, you'll know just how precious this tranquility is.

If you feel it's a shame to only see the natural scenery, make sure to visit Songsogotaek House as well. It's a traditional 99-칸 (room) hanok built by Songso Sim Ho-taek, a descendant of the Cheongsong Sim clan, who was a *manseokkun* (wealthy landowner) during King Yeongjo's reign in Joseon. It was considered one of the wealthiest families representing the Yeongnam region, alongside Gyeongju's Choe Clan House, so you can imagine its scale!

From the neatly extended tiled roofs and spacious courtyard to the beautifully cultivated flowers in the yard...

As I slowly looked around, it felt like time was moving slower. In Deokcheon Village, where Songsogotaek House is located, there are other traditional houses like Chalbanggong Jongtaek and Songjeonggotaek, and you can even experience a Hanok stay and dyeing activities. So, spending a night to fully immerse yourself in the charm of these old homes is also a wonderful idea.

By the way, Simbuja Bapsang, located nearby, is a real hidden gem for foodies! After enjoying a meticulously prepared full Korean meal there, your trip to Cheongsong will be even more memorable.

Recommended Itineraries

My trip was a 2-day, 1-night journey with my parents in their 70s, and since we departed from Seoul, I only managed to visit Jusannji Lake and Songsogotaek House from this list.

I regret not being able to see more, as we spent half the morning at Solsaem Hot Spring in Sonobelle Cheongsong. However, if you're traveling with young children or elderly parents, even this shorter itinerary is perfectly enjoyable.

If you go for 3 days, 2 nights, you can leisurely explore either just Juwangsan National Park or both Juwangsan National Park and Songsogotaek House!

If you're with kids, just playing in the water at Jeolgol Valley and Eoreumgol Valley would make 3 days, 2 nights fly by, wouldn't it? Haha! Juwangsan National Park also boasts many other geological wonders. It's even designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

This summer, if you're looking for a quiet and cool place to relax, seriously consider a trip to Cheongsong. You won't regret it! 🌿
