If you're eager to witness the stunning autumn foliage of Cheongsong's Juwangsan National Park but aren't up for a long, strenuous hike, Jusanji Pond is the perfect companion destination. I initially thought it was just another reservoir nestled in the mountains, but a visit quickly revealed why Jusanji holds such a special place. Its unique allure comes from the ancient willow trees (Wangbeodeul) growing directly from the water, creating mesmerizing reflections on the tranquil surface.

Especially in autumn, when the vibrant fall colors join this mystical scene, Jusanji becomes a highly sought-after destination for a Cheongsong fall getaway. I'll share my experience, covering everything from parking at Jusanji and the scenic walking path to how much time you'll need and the best moments to catch the magical morning mist.
1. Jusanji Pond Parking

Jusanji Pond is located within Juwangsan National Park, and a dedicated parking lot is available right at the entrance. Even during my visit, there were quite a few cars, but the parking area generally offered enough space.

However, be aware that the area around the parking lot is currently undergoing construction for the Jusanji Tourist Area Development Project, which can make things a bit busy. The project is scheduled to continue until 01/23/2027.
During the peak autumn foliage season, visitor numbers can surge, so keep this in mind when planning your trip!

After parking, Jusanji Pond isn't immediately visible. You'll need to follow the signs and walk for about 0.6 miles, which takes approximately 15 minutes.
From my experience, the path isn't a steep hiking trail but rather a gentle, winding route through the forest. So, there's no need for specialized hiking gear, but comfortable walking shoes are definitely recommended.

Estimated Time
Parking Lot → Jusanji Pond: approx. 10-15 minutes walk (one way)
+ Enjoying the willow trees & taking photos
= Approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour (round trip)
This makes it a relatively easy and enjoyable course, perfect for those traveling with parents or anyone who finds a full Juwangsan hike a bit too much.
2. Jusanji's Submerged Willow Trees, Autumn Foliage, and Morning Mist

So, what exactly makes Cheongsong's Jusanji Pond so famous? Jusanji is actually an artificial reservoir, constructed to provide agricultural water. Work began in August 1720, during the first year of King Gyeongjong's reign, and was completed in October of the following year, 1721.

The true highlight of Jusanji is the ancient willow trees (Wangbeodeul) that thrive within the reservoir itself. These old willows, growing both by the water's edge and submerged in its depths, create Jusanji's uniquely mysterious landscape. It gained even greater renown after being featured as a filming location for the acclaimed movie "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring."

When I visited recently, it was still a lush green season, offering a beautiful view of the vibrant forest. Jusanji truly offers stunning scenery in every season—spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

The Cheongsong and Juwangsan area typically sees its autumn leaves begin to change in mid-October, though this can vary slightly with yearly temperatures. The peak period for experiencing the full splendor of fall colors is usually from late October through early November 2026, making it the ideal time for many visitors.

For photography enthusiasts, the autumn foliage is only half the story—many are equally captivated by the famous Jusanji morning mist. To capture both the mist and the serene reflections on the water's surface, it's best to visit early in the morning, around sunrise.
If you arrive later in the morning, you'll still be able to leisurely enjoy the beautiful views of the willow trees, fall colors, and the reservoir, just without the ethereal mist.
3. Cheongsong Travel Itinerary

Rather than traveling all the way to Cheongsong just for Jusanji, I highly recommend combining it with a visit to Juwangsan National Park or other attractions for a full day's itinerary.
Since a round trip to Jusanji typically takes about an hour, it's perfect for a morning excursion, leaving plenty of time to explore Juwangsan or other Cheongsong sights afterward.

This itinerary is ideal for those who, like me, prefer a gentle walk over a challenging hike, are traveling with parents, or wish to capture stunning photos of autumn foliage and the unique willow trees. It's definitely worth adding to your travel plans.

Traveling from a different region can be quite tiring, so staying overnight in Cheongsong the day before and heading to Jusanji in the morning makes for a much more comfortable experience. I'd especially recommend this approach when traveling with family.

The Sonobelle Cheongsong, where I stayed, is just about a 10-15 minute drive from Jusanji. It features amazing hot springs and open-air baths that your parents (and you!) will absolutely love, making it a highly recommended family accommodation.

Jusanji might not be a flashy tourist destination, but it's a place where the atmosphere completely transforms the moment you emerge from the forest path to see the tranquil reservoir.

If you're visiting in autumn, aim for the peak foliage season from late October to early November 2026, and try to catch the early morning mist along with the reflections of the willow trees on the water's surface.
It's a wonderful, easy addition to any Juwangsan autumn trip, highly recommended for your Cheongsong itinerary!
