Chateau Elan Hunter Valley Review: Luxury Vineyard Stay
An honest review of Chateau Elan at The Vintage Hunter Valley. Discover if this famous golf resort and vineyard stay near Sydney is right for your next trip.

On my recent getaway from Sydney, I decided to escape to the countryside and visit Hunter Valley—Australia's premier wine region famous for its world-class vineyards and resident wild kangaroos!
During my trip, I stayed at the renowned Chateau Elan at The Vintage Hunter Valley. Here is my honest, unfiltered review of the property.
I booked this stay about two months in advance. Thanks to my Agoda Platinum status, I managed to snag a great weekday rate of around $400 USD for a 3-night stay (excluding breakfast).

Getting There

Hunter Valley is located about 100 miles (a 2-hour drive) north of Sydney.
While it is not too far, having a car is highly recommended as public transit options are limited.
As you drive deeper into the Pokolbin region where Chateau Elan is located, you will start seeing signs for the resort. The weather during my drive was a bit moody with occasional light rain, but it only added to the cozy countryside vibe!

Following the signs leads you past beautiful ponds, private residential estates, local pubs, and boutique lodges until the grand entrance of Chateau Elan at The Vintage appears.
The Lobby & Check-In
Check-in starts at 3:00 PM | Check-out by 11:00 AM

The hotel lobby doubles as the Vintage Golf Club House.
This is where you handle both check-in and check-out.

We hadn't pre-booked any specific activities before arriving, so we asked the front desk for recommendations. The staff was incredibly friendly and provided us with detailed maps and local guides to help plan our winery route!

Since this is a premier golf resort, you will see golf buggies parked everywhere, which guests can use to get around. There was even a super cute retro ice cream cart in the lobby!
Room Type: Villa 1-Bedroom with Golf View
Featuring a living room, fully equipped kitchen, dining area, private balcony, bedroom, and spa bath.
After checking in, we were assigned to the second floor of Villa 8.

The moment we stepped onto the second-floor landing, we were greeted by a stunning view of the hills—and a wild herd of kangaroos grazing peacefully in the distance!

This side overlooks the beautifully manicured 18-hole championship golf course.

Opening the door with our keycard, the layout was incredibly spacious. To the left was the open-plan kitchen, living room, dining area, and balcony. To the right was the master bedroom and bathroom.

The living room features a cozy sofa set and leads directly out to a private balcony overlooking the golf course, with dining tables set up both indoors and outdoors.

Perfect for enjoying a relaxed breakfast or a glass of local wine!

One of the main reasons I booked this villa was the fireplace! It is a gas-operated fireplace designed to look like real logs. It throws off actual heat, making the room incredibly cozy for an afternoon nap.
However, turning it on can be a bit tricky. We had to scan the QR guide in the room and try a few times before we successfully lit it.

Here is the kitchen!
Many accommodations in Hunter Valley have "kitchenettes" that you can't actually cook in. Chateau Elan, however, features a fully functional kitchen equipped with dinnerware, glassware, a dishwasher, and a gas stove—making it incredibly easy to cook your own meals or plate up local takeout.

There is also an in-unit washing machine, and they provide complimentary coffee capsules, fresh milk, and two bottles of water. Above the microwave, you will find a generous selection of teas, snacks, and instant coffee.

Thanks to the kitchen setup, we enjoyed a beautiful wine and cheese night right in our room...

And put together a gorgeous brunch the next morning!

About 99% of Hunter Valley wineries close early, around 5:00 PM.
Since we arrived late on our first day and couldn't make it to any cellar doors, we decided to try the in-room minibar selection. They stock red and white wines from the highly acclaimed local vineyard, "Brokenwood."
The pricing was surprisingly reasonable for hotel minibar standards. They also offer pre-mixed cocktails (Martinis, Old Fashioneds), olives, crackers, and gourmet spreads for purchase.
(+) If you need a grocery run, the nearest large supermarket is Coles Huntlee in Branxton. I highly recommend stocking up on snacks there!

The Bedroom

The bedroom features its own TV, an armchair, and direct access to the master bathroom.
The bed set includes two small pillows and two decorative cushions. If you prefer large, fluffy pillows, the pillow selection might not be your favorite.
The mattress itself is extremely soft—almost like a waterbed. If you prefer a firm, supportive mattress, this might be a hit-or-miss for you.

The resort provides its own signature black-packaged toiletries. Even the bar soap was completely black, which was a unique touch!

The bathroom layout.
My only minor complaint was the lack of counter space and mirrors for doing makeup.
However, the massive spa bath completely made up for it. I threw in a Lush bath bomb, turned on the hydrotherapy jets, and felt all my travel fatigue melt away. The tub is incredibly spacious!

If you take a stroll around the resort grounds around dusk, you are guaranteed to run into large mobs of wild kangaroos.

While you can see them all over Hunter Valley, the grassy hills surrounding Chateau Elan seem to be one of their favorite evening hangout spots.

They are absolutely adorable to watch from a safe distance!
The Pool & On-Site Amenities

The outdoor swimming pool is on the smaller side.
Since we visited during the cooler winter season, we skipped the pool entirely. The resort complex also features a kids' playground, tennis courts, an award-winning day spa, restaurants, and bars. (Note: Resort guests receive a 20% discount at the day spa!)
Pros & Cons
What I Loved (Pros)
1. Fantastic central location for exploring the top wineries in Pokolbin.
2. Walkable on-site dining, bars, and spa facilities so you don't always have to drive.
3. Incredibly spacious villa layout with a private spa tub and cozy fireplace.
4. Fully equipped kitchen and dishwasher, perfect for self-catering and wine nights.
What to Consider (Cons)
1. Very golf-centric environment. If you aren't a golfer, the buggy-dominated paths and golf course focus might feel a bit less relevant to your stay.
2. The pool is quite small compared to the scale of the resort.
3. The TVs are older models and not Smart TVs (no easy Netflix casting for digital detox skeptics).
4. The bed and pillows are extremely soft, which might not suit everyone's sleeping preferences.
Final Verdict: Would I Stay Again? (▲)
If I return to Hunter Valley in the future...
I would probably look into trying a different boutique lodge or vineyard cottage next time.
While the stay was perfectly comfortable, Chateau Elan feels highly optimized for [families, seniors, and golf enthusiasts] rather than couples looking for a romantic, intimate vineyard vibe. Since Hunter Valley has such a diverse range of accommodations, it's best to choose one that aligns perfectly with your vacation goals!
